Surf Casters September 2020 Reef beach field day report by Martin Wearmouth
We had decided on an early start at our September meeting so 5 Surf Casters met at Armadale at 6am on
Friday to make the trip to Reef Beach Bremer Bay. Vince, Gary, Stuart, Sri and myself set off on time for
the drive, after a stop at Katanning we arrived at the beach about 11.30am, Ron was already there and had
managed to get the shack again which was a great bonus with the strong winds forecast for the next day.
After setting up and unpacking the cars we had lunch then headed off to check the beach conditions, we drove
to the eastern end which was sheltered from the wind, the beach was soft in a few spots but we could drive
all the way to the cliffs on the eastern side, with strong easterly winds forecast for Saturday and a storm
coming in on Friday night this would be a good spot to fish and get some protection from the wind.
We fished at the eastern end out of the wind and Vince managed to catch 3 skippy and a few wrasse, I caught
a herring, on the way back we fished a nice gutter but only I caught a 4.8kg Salmon. We returned to the shack
and fired up the pot belly and had dinner and a few drinks as we all socialised and made plans of where to
fish on Saturday.
When we went to bed the wind was strong and through the night as the storm went through the tin on the
shack was quite noisy, It has been there since the 1960s and not much work has been done in the last few
years, this made sleeping difficult as it sounded like the wind was going to rip the tin off.
October 2020 Reel Talk Page 7
Well we made it to Saturday morning with a lot less sleep than we would like and the wind had dropped but
it was still very strong from the east. Ron headed off first and set up close to camp in a nice gutter. The rest
of us headed to the eastern side to fish with mixed results but it was pleasant fishing with no strong wind.
I managed to catch a few species on my float rig casting onto the submerged reef area: Western Rock
Blackfish, Herring, Banded Sweep, Whiting, Wrasse & Cod, But those fishing the beach did not catch much
in the protected bay.
Mark and Wendy Hansen arrived Saturday morning after having been to Bluff Creek on Friday and put a
memorial plaque on the rocks for Mark Nurse. They set up camp at the eastern end.
After lunch we again fished the eastern side but with low tide did not catch much, I moved to a spot close to
camp that was close to the outer reef and managed to catch 6 skippy but with the strong wind it was hard
fishing and the fish only came on the bite for about 20 minutes and for the next half hour not even a bite so
I headed back to camp to warm up by the fire.
Saturday night was a much better night in the shack, the wind was not making any of the tin rattle so we all
slept much better. On Sunday morning I tried my Skippy spot but caught nothing. Ron and Vince fished a
nice gutter and caught some Salmon, Vince caught and release a 83cm salmon, we decided to drive further
east and spotted a salmon school but after a couple got caught they moved out to deeper water and stayed
just out of reach for a couple of hours. We set up in front of them and still managed a few salmon each until
we returned to camp for lunch, Ron had left late morning to head home.
After lunch we went back to the spot, we saw the salmon and found another smaller school that again was
out of casting distance. We set up on the beach close to them and again picked up some stragglers over the
next few hours.
Sri had just bought a drone so he set that up and dropped a bait out next to the salmon school, it did not take
long and he was onto a salmon. After that one was beached he sent the drone out again and this time landed
in the salmon school as soon as the slack was taken up the salmon was already on but this time on the way
to the beach the fish tangled up in 3 other lines, this was the first time Sri had used the drone so a great start.
October 2020 Reel Talk Page 8
Just before dark I moved back to the spot I had caught the Skippy the day before but did not catch anything.
Vince and Mark fished with me and both caught some Herring before we packed up and headed back to
camp, we again had the pot belly going and everyone sat and socialised as we kept warm by the fire.
Mark and Wendy joined us ready to drive home early on Monday morning.
Gary left early Monday morning but 4 of us stayed on to fish another day. After breakfast we fished a gutter
close to the track onto the beach but all I caught was a stingray, we headed east again to try and find a salmon
school. I spotted a small school and cast into it but the fish just ignored the bait and moved on, this happened
about 5 times over the morning so we moved to the sheltered bay under the cliffs at the eastern side but again
not even a bite.
After lunch we fished the gutter close to camp that Ron and Vince had caught the salmon, it looked good but
again no fish, Vince did catch a stingray (I was fishing next to him and was glad it was not on my line ) ,
Sri put out some more drone baits but no bites this time so we headed back just on dark to fire up the pot
belly and have dinner.
We had all four seasons again this trip, starting with strong wing and storms then finished with a nice sunny
Sunday, a good variety of species with Mark Hansen getting 9.
Thanks to all those that attended the trip and I hope to see everyone back at another field day soon.

First Fishing trip to Reef Beach by Stuart Waterman Early Friday morning, half a dozen keen anglers headed off towards Reef Beach for a weekend of fishing
and camping. We were hoping to jag the shed for a bit of protection, hence the early get away. Little did we
know the advanced party was ahead of us, securing the shed campsite, checking out the fishing report on our
arrival, and preparing morning tea (that last bit may not be true, but would have been nice) thanks Ron, well
done mate.
The weather the first 24 hours was pretty ordinary, as was the fishing. The wind during that first night was
relentless the fear of the stability of the shed a concern to all, however eventually it settled and some sleep
was achievable. We also had a couple of human alarm clocks to get us going each morning, however I think
they were in South Australia time zone, as the hours of sleep seemed to be reduced.
The weather did ease over the next few days making fishing a little easier at times, with a variety of species
being caught along the beach.
Salmon were a welcome sight with their large black schools cruising the beaches, frequently sitting just out
of casting range for most of us, anyway.
There was a good catch of herring caught at the eastern end of the beach by Mark, with a variety of assorted
species.
Sri managed to score 2 nice salmon from his first two drone drops, an enviable record.
I managed to score a salmon on a white richter lure, a first for me.
Martin scored several nice salmon, long cast helps reach them.
Vince was excitedly fighting the only hookup on our last afternoon after a very fishless day, only to be
disappointed as the stingray waved its flaps at him.

Recorder Report It was good to see the competition year kick off in May with some great fish caught. A couple of new faces
David Wilding added a Salmon to his species badge and at 3.6kg to his Master’s badge, David Trainer also
added Herring to his species badge
In the open competition the ledger has been wiped clean to start fresh and the first entry was a solid salmon
weighing 6kg at Reef Beach from Peet Wessels, There were some great photos taken on that trip and the
gutters looked superb. The Salmon was caught outside of the competition “lines down period” hence eligible
for the Open Competition. During the field trip amongst a large bag and plenty of points Peet also caught a
large Tailor 3kg gilled and gutted. Well done Peet
Now the borders are open people can take a break and head away to some fishy destinations, do not forget to
keep the Open Competition in mind.
If you’re unsure of any fish caught for eligibility just give me a call.

DRY CASTING – 6TH SEPTEMBER 2020
Not much to write about this month with only four members turning up for what was supposed to be a wet
day, but once again, no rain.
I think Father’s Day was the culprit for the lack of attendance. I think we will lay the blame on that
anyway.
Hendo had a good day in both accuracy events with 153m in the DHA and 135m in the SHA, along with 3
bulls eyes. Good to see.
Chas threw both 56gr casts out but made up for it with the longest artificial bait at 138.25m and the longest
112gr at 169.00m.
The first Sunday in October will be our last Sunday for the next 5 or 6 months, so it’s back to a week day.
You will be informed if there are any changes.

Time to stop WHINING and to start WINING
I don't understand why prescription medicine is allowed to advertise on TV or why anyone would think of trying one of the medicines after listening to
the laundry list of warnings of possible side effects. But this is definitely an exception!
Do you have feelings of inadequacy? Do you suffer from shyness?
Do you wish you were a better conversationalist? Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive?
Do you feel stressed?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about
Cabernet Sauvignon
Yes, Cabernet Sauvignon is the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident. It can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world
that you're ready and willing to do just about anything.
You will notice the benefits of Cabernet Sauvignon almost immediately and, with a regimen of regular doses,
you'll overcome obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want. Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past. You will discover talents you never knew
you had.
Cabernet Sauvignon may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use it, but women who wouldn't mind nursing or
becoming pregnant are encouraged to try it.
Side Effects May Include
Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, loss of motor control, loss of clothing, loss of money, delusions of grandeur, table dancing,
headache, dehydration, dry mouth, and a desire to sing Karaoke and play all-night Strip Poker, Truth Or Dare, and Naked Twister.
