What is the Dignity Challenge?

The aim of the Dignity in Care Challenge is to create a care system where there is a zero tolerance approach to the abuse of and disrespect towards people using care services.

The Dignity Challenge is a clear statement of what people can expect from a service that respects dignity. It is backed up by statements (see page 3) that can be used by providers, commissioners, and people who use services to see how their local services are performing.

The Dignity Challenge

Quality care services that respect people’s dignity should:

1. Have a zero tolerance of all forms of abuse.

2. Support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family.

3. Treat each person as an individual by offering a personalised service.

4. Enable people to maintain the maximum level of independence, choice and control.

5. Listen and support people to express their needs and wants

6. Respect people’s right to privacy.

7. Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of retribution

8. Engage with family members and carers as care partners.

9. Assist people to maintain esteem.

10. Act to alleviate people’s loneliness and isolation.

Dignity in Care AwardsQuality health and social care services should place people right at the centre of them.

They also need to fully respect the dignity of the individual. This is not always the case for individuals receiving care and provider services in our community, which is why Staffordshire County Council has launched its own Dignity in Care Self-Assessment Toolkit and Dignity Challenge Awards for provider services.

The council will reward the individual, team or organisation that best demonstrates commitment, competence and best practice around the ten challenges.

The process of selection will beas follows:

Each individual, organisation or team will be invited to apply for the award by completing a nomination form. The nomination forms will be reviewed by the Challenge Panel. It will then shortlist those through to the next stages.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony which will take place in March 2011.
