The Year In Review

Comprised of over 160 Oklahoma corporations and business groups, the Oklahoma Business Roundtable serves as the state’s primary economic development support organization.

We are a collaborative nonprofit group whose sole purpose is advancing Oklahoma’s economic development. We support programs that focus on business start-up, expansion, recruitment and workforce development.

Created in 1991, the Roundtable has supported hundreds of state, national and global business promotion activities resulting in thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in corporate investment throughout Oklahoma. The New Model for Economic Growth

Membership Meetings Feature Top Executives The Roundtable’s fall 2018 membership meeting, held in Oklahoma City, featured Brian Byrnes, Senior Vice President, Oklahoma City Thunder. Brian provided a unique look at the Thunder’s strategic sales and marketing efforts and highlighted the significant economic impact the organization has had throughout its first decade in Oklahoma.

In March 2019, a special Roundtable Executive Briefing was given by Joe Brusuelas, Chief Economist of RSM US. Brusuelas provided a comprehensive U.S. economic forecast to members. Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell also brought an update on his program of work.

In June 2019, Governor Kevin Stitt and Commerce Secretary Sean Kouplen discussed ongoing state economic development efforts in a unique “conversation” format led by Roundtable Chairman Bill Anoatubby. All three meetings concluded with a members networking reception.

Dear Business Roundtable Members & Prospective Members: Let me introduce you to the Oklahoma Business Roundtable, an association of business leaders and economic development partners dedicated to growing Oklahoma. The Roundtable provides a window into the strong, thriving business community in Oklahoma, and a broad perspective on the trajectory of economic enterprise in our great state.

Our stated mission is: Business Leadership Advancing Oklahoma’s Economy. We do this by serving as the state’s primary economic development “support” organization providing vital funding to assist business retention, expansion, recruitment and company start-up efforts. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that was formed in 1991.

We assist our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Commerce Department and many statewide partners with focused investments targeted toward the greatest economic development return. This backing includes assisting workforce development, trade and investment missions; marketing Oklahoma globally; hosting prospects, site location consultants and dignitaries; promoting quality improvement and economic development strategic planning efforts; and sponsoring special business development events.

Creating quality jobs and growing Oklahoma’s economy is our priority and we continue to make a difference. In FY 2018-2019, the Commerce Department worked directly on 71 projects creating 8,700 new jobs (with an average salary of over $63,000) and over $2.6 billion in capital investment. In addition, new and announced private sector investment was more.

As business leaders, our continued investment supporting job creation and long-term economic opportunity in communities across the state builds a stronger Oklahoma.

Expanding and Recruiting New BusinessThe Oklahoma Business Roundtable actively supports projects to promote job creation and investment through new business location and expansion of existing industry. We do this by partnering with state leaders, Commerce Department, communities and two statewide business development teams.

The 45-member Governor’s Economic Development Marketing team is composed of economic development professionals from across the state. Their mission is to market Oklahoma to potential

domestic business clients which leads to expansion and attraction of jobs and investment.

The 64-member Governor’s International Team supports export trade, attraction of foreign direct investment and international engagement among the business community, education and government sectors.

Global Promotion and Attraction Initiatives

Targets are corporate decision makers, site location and real estate consultants who direct business to our region. Emphasis is on primary jobs in “wealth creating” industries such as aerospace/defense, biotech and agribusiness, energy, information technology, advanced manufacturing, financial services, and distribution.

State leaders, Commerce Department, Roundtable and community partners hosted strategic business and industry presentations, networking receptions and prospect meetings in key U.S. cities and global locations this past year. These activities have led to new business prospects and project locations for Oklahoma companies and communities. Growing Oklahoma’s Aerospace Industry – Paris International Air Show

An Oklahoma business delegation led by Governor Stitt and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce attended the Paris Air Show in June 2019, in support of Oklahoma’s growing aerospace industry cluster. The biennial

Lt. Governor Promotes Oklahoma

The Roundtable supported several Lt. Governor led projects including Small Business Day at the Capitol, Young Professionals Day, a new state branding initiative and the annual Turkey Hunt for business prospects held in 8 Oklahoma communities.

Connecting Oklahoma’s Manufacturing Community.

Partnering with the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance, the Roundtable supported a series of statewide B2B networking luncheons and forums designed to bring Oklahoma manufacturers together for resource updates, marketing and sales.  

Entrepreneurship & Business Start-Up Annually, the Roundtable provides support for activities that promote entrepreneurship and business start-up.

Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup Recognizes Top Collegiate Business Students

The Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup, coordinated by i2E, is a statewide collegiate business plan competition. In its 15-year history, the program has awarded more than $1.95 million in cash, $140,000 in scholarships and $250,000 in fellowships. Nearly 2,300 students from 33 campuses statewide have produced over 700 new innovative business ideas and several new-start-up companies.

Statewide FIRST Robotics Competition

The Roundtable supported the annual U.S. FIRST Robotics regional competition in Oklahoma City. This project helps high school students discover career potential in engineering and research. The regional included over 60 teams and 1,200 students and mentors with over 100 corporate volunteers.

Thunder Launchpad

The Thunder Launchpad is an accelerator program which helps connect technology driven entrepreneurs with the resources they need to launch and grow a business in Oklahoma. In FY 2018-2019 a total of 29 technology startups participated in the 12-week program run by StitchCrew in partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Mentorship Program for New Companies

Creative Oklahoma’s team mentoring program is modeled after MIT’s successful start-up effort. The one-on-one mentoring program connects senior level business people with entrepreneurs.

Preparing the Workforce

During FY 2018-2019, the Roundtable supported several STEM projects to better prepare and grow Oklahoma’s workforce pipeline.

These include:

• OU Innovation HubNew prototyping center for start-up companies.

• Oklahoma Education and Industry Partnership /Career Tech Regional professional development sessions and company tours for 5th-12th grade teachers which provided new tools to better connect the classroom and business community. Sessions were held in Oklahoma City, McAlester, Pryor and Alva.

• Governor’s STEM and Entrepreneurship SummitStatewide business and educator forum to spotlight community and state initiatives in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Paris Air Show provided a major trade venue for the aerospace and defense industries and attracted more than 150,000 aerospace executives and companies.

The group met with dozens of prospects and companies and hosted a special breakfast networking event with global aerospace executives.

SelectUSA – Promoting Foreign Direct Investment to Oklahoma

An Oklahoma business development team met with dozens of corporate business prospects at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C. in June 2019. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Summit is the highest profile event dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S. Companies such as Italian-based Sofidel were introduced to the U.S. market at this event. Today the company is investing $360 million in a new Oklahoma facility.

Oklahoma Delegation Promotes Bioscience Opportunities at Global Conference

Dozens of scientists, business executives, educators and economic development officers

from across the state promoted Oklahoma bioscience opportunities at the 2019 BIO International Convention in June in Philadelphia. The delegation held a major reception and participated in over 240 partnering meetings with potential clients and prospects.

Additional Business Expansion and Recruitment Events

These include the Offshore Technology Show (Energy), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Trade Show, IAMC (Global Corp. Real Estate Execs), Mexican Petroleum Congress (Energy), and MRO Trade Show (Aerospace).

The Roundtable supported dozens of one-on-one meetings and company visitation efforts by state leaders throughout the year. In addition, several national and global corporate site selection consultants and trade delegations were hosted by state leaders, the Roundtable, and state domestic and international marketing teams. The site consultants help advise client companies on U.S. facility location.

Roundtable Grants Targeted to Statewide Economic Development Projects

The Roundtable has approved grant funding for FY 2019-2020 of $207,500 for 13 statewide economic development projects. Funding is being enhanced with more than $1.6 million in partner funding for the one-time grants. 

Projects include:

• Governor’s Economic Development and Workforce Summit - Education and training conference for statewide economic development and workforce professionals to learn about new programs, policies and initiatives to grow the Oklahoma economy.

• Unmanned Aerial Systems Tech Forum - Education and B2B networking forum promoting growth of the unmanned aerial systems industry in the region/state.

• Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education “Future of Work” Event - Action oriented one-day education forum and work session for the higher education and business community to receive the latest baseline data on how technology and other factors will affect the “future of work”.

• Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) BIO Venture Forum - 2020 forum that showcases OMRF’s and Oklahoma’s healthcare innovation opportunities to a select group of 45 national BioPharma and venture capital group representatives.

Dear Business Roundtable Members & Prospective Members: Let me introduce you to the Oklahoma Business Roundtable, an association of business leaders and economic development partners dedicated to growing Oklahoma. The Roundtable provides a window into the strong, thriving business community in Oklahoma, and a broad perspective on the trajectory of economic enterprise in our great state.

Our stated mission is: Business Leadership Advancing Oklahoma’s Economy. We do this by serving as the state’s primary economic development “support” organization providing vital funding to assist business retention, expansion, recruitment and company start-up efforts. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that was formed in 1991.

We assist our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Commerce Department and many statewide partners with focused investments targeted toward the greatest economic development return. This backing includes assisting workforce development, trade and investment missions; marketing Oklahoma globally; hosting prospects, site location consultants and dignitaries; promoting quality improvement and economic development strategic planning efforts; and sponsoring special business development events.

Creating quality jobs and growing Oklahoma’s economy is our priority and we continue to make a difference. In FY 2018-2019, the Commerce Department worked directly on 71 projects creating 8,700 new jobs (with an average salary of over $63,000) and over $2.6 billion in capital investment. In addition, new and announced private sector investment was more.

As business leaders, our continued investment supporting job creation and long-term economic opportunity in communities across the state builds a stronger Oklahoma.

Expanding and Recruiting New BusinessThe Oklahoma Business Roundtable actively supports projects to promote job creation and investment through new business location and expansion of existing industry. We do this by partnering with state leaders, Commerce Department, communities and two statewide business development teams.

The 45-member Governor’s Economic Development Marketing team is composed of economic development professionals from across the state. Their mission is to market Oklahoma to potential

domestic business clients which leads to expansion and attraction of jobs and investment.

The 64-member Governor’s International Team supports export trade, attraction of foreign direct investment and international engagement among the business community, education and government sectors.

Global Promotion and Attraction Initiatives

Targets are corporate decision makers, site location and real estate consultants who direct business to our region. Emphasis is on primary jobs in “wealth creating” industries such as aerospace/defense, biotech and agribusiness, energy, information technology, advanced manufacturing, financial services, and distribution.

State leaders, Commerce Department, Roundtable and community partners hosted strategic business and industry presentations, networking receptions and prospect meetings in key U.S. cities and global locations this past year. These activities have led to new business prospects and project locations for Oklahoma companies and communities. Growing Oklahoma’s Aerospace Industry – Paris International Air Show

An Oklahoma business delegation led by Governor Stitt and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce attended the Paris Air Show in June 2019, in support of Oklahoma’s growing aerospace industry cluster. The biennial

The Roundtable supported several Lt. Governor led projects including Small Business Day at the Capitol, Young Professionals Day, a new state branding initiative and the annual Turkey Hunt for business prospects held in 8 Oklahoma communities.

Connecting Oklahoma’s Manufacturing Community.

Partnering with the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance, the Roundtable supported a series of statewide B2B networking luncheons and forums designed to bring Oklahoma manufacturers together for resource updates, marketing and sales.  

Entrepreneurship & Business Start-Up Annually, the Roundtable provides support for activities that promote entrepreneurship and business start-up.

Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup Recognizes Top Collegiate Business Students

The Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup, coordinated by i2E, is a statewide collegiate business plan competition. In its 15-year history, the program has awarded more than $1.95 million in cash, $140,000 in scholarships and $250,000 in fellowships. Nearly 2,300 students from 33 campuses statewide have produced over 700 new innovative business ideas and several new-start-up companies.

Statewide FIRST Robotics Competition

The Roundtable supported the annual U.S. FIRST Robotics regional competition in Oklahoma City. This project helps high school students discover career potential in engineering and research. The regional included over 60 teams and 1,200 students and mentors with over 100 corporate volunteers.

Thunder Launchpad

The Thunder Launchpad is an accelerator program which helps connect technology driven entrepreneurs with the resources they need to launch and grow a business in Oklahoma. In FY 2018-2019 a total of 29 technology startups participated in the 12-week program run by StitchCrew in partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Mentorship Program for New Companies

Creative Oklahoma’s team mentoring program is modeled after MIT’s successful start-up effort. The one-on-one mentoring program connects senior level business people with entrepreneurs.

Preparing the Workforce

During FY 2018-2019, the Roundtable supported several STEM projects to better prepare and grow Oklahoma’s workforce pipeline.

These include:

• OU Innovation HubNew prototyping center for start-up companies.

• Oklahoma Education and Industry Partnership /Career Tech Regional professional development sessions and company tours for 5th-12th grade teachers which provided new tools to better connect the classroom and business community. Sessions were held in Oklahoma City, McAlester, Pryor and Alva.

• Governor’s STEM and Entrepreneurship SummitStatewide business and educator forum to spotlight community and state initiatives in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Paris Air Show provided a major trade venue for the aerospace and defense industries and attracted more than 150,000 aerospace executives and companies.

The group met with dozens of prospects and companies and hosted a special breakfast networking event with global aerospace executives.

SelectUSA – Promoting Foreign Direct Investment to Oklahoma

An Oklahoma business development team met with dozens of corporate business prospects at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C. in June 2019. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Summit is the highest profile event dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S. Companies such as Italian-based Sofidel were introduced to the U.S. market at this event. Today the company is investing $360 million in a new Oklahoma facility.

Oklahoma Delegation Promotes Bioscience Opportunities at Global Conference

Dozens of scientists, business executives, educators and economic development officers

from across the state promoted Oklahoma bioscience opportunities at the 2019 BIO International Convention in June in Philadelphia. The delegation held a major reception and participated in over 240 partnering meetings with potential clients and prospects.

Additional Business Expansion and Recruitment Events

These include the Offshore Technology Show (Energy), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Trade Show, IAMC (Global Corp. Real Estate Execs), Mexican Petroleum Congress (Energy), and MRO Trade Show (Aerospace).

The Roundtable supported dozens of one-on-one meetings and company visitation efforts by state leaders throughout the year. In addition, several national and global corporate site selection consultants and trade delegations were hosted by state leaders, the Roundtable, and state domestic and international marketing teams. The site consultants help advise client companies on U.S. facility location.

Roundtable Grants Targeted to Statewide Economic Development Projects

The Roundtable has approved grant funding for FY 2019-2020 of $207,500 for 13 statewide economic development projects. Funding is being enhanced with more than $1.6 million in partner funding for the one-time grants. 

Projects include:

• Governor’s Economic Development and Workforce Summit - Education and training conference for statewide economic development and workforce professionals to learn about new programs, policies and initiatives to grow the Oklahoma economy.

• Unmanned Aerial Systems Tech Forum - Education and B2B networking forum promoting growth of the unmanned aerial systems industry in the region/state.

• Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education “Future of Work” Event - Action oriented one-day education forum and work session for the higher education and business community to receive the latest baseline data on how technology and other factors will affect the “future of work”.

• Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) BIO Venture Forum - 2020 forum that showcases OMRF’s and Oklahoma’s healthcare innovation opportunities to a select group of 45 national BioPharma and venture capital group representatives.

Membership Meetings Feature Top Executives The Roundtable’s fall 2018 membership meeting, held in Oklahoma City, featured Brian Byrnes, Senior Vice President, Oklahoma City Thunder. Brian provided a unique look at the Thunder’s strategic sales and marketing efforts and highlighted the significant economic impact the organization has had throughout its first decade in Oklahoma.

In March 2019, a special Roundtable Executive Briefing was given by Joe Brusuelas, Chief Economist of RSM US. Brusuelas provided a comprehensive U.S. economic forecast to members. Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell also brought an update on his program of work.

In June 2019, Governor Kevin Stitt and Commerce Secretary Sean Kouplen discussed ongoing state economic development efforts in a unique “conversation” format led by Roundtable Chairman Bill Anoatubby. All three meetings concluded with a members networking reception.
