Wheat in Africa

1. Growing gap in wheat supply:- Consumption: around 50 million t- Production: around 22 million t - Per capita : 10-100 kg/year, increasing

2. Rising & volatile wheat prices- import cost: over $ 12 billion

3. Political will to increase production to insure food security (AU-CAADP)

Alignment with AfDB Agriculture Sector Strategy

Increased concerns for food security (crisis of

2008)

Addressing 4 of the 6 CAADP strategic

commodities &

pillar 4 : research and development

Low-income African countries

Expertise and experience of CGIAR Centers in

Africa

& alignment with CRPs

Context & rationale:

Page 7: Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa: the Case of Wheat

SARD-SC Wheat (Sub) project

Enhancing wheat productivity and production for increased food security, economic growth and poverty

alleviation in Africa

The SARD-SC Wheat is part of an AfDB-funded 5-year project: “Multinational CGIAR Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Commodities in Africa (SARD-SC project)” covering 4 commodities: cassava, maize, rice, wheat.

Objectives: Increase on-farm wheat productivity and production for food

security;

Optimize the management of scarce natural resources;

Enhance the capacity of the NARES to conduct needed research for development .

 East Africa Lowlands: Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea

West Africa Lowlands: Nigeria, Mali, Mauritania, Niger

1. Three R4D “hubs” for technology testing, validation dissemination and training are being established in 3 major producing countries & will serve as spring board for technology transfer to partner countries

Page 11: Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa: the Case of Wheat

SARD-SC : The Wheat (Sub)project

APPROACH & METHODOLOGIES….:

2. Collaborative research and training will also be implemented in partners countries on a more focussed scale to address the specific needs of each of these countries, and benefitting from activities/results generated at hubs, where appropriate.

Component 1: Generation of technologies & innovations

1. In Nigeria, • About 1600 entries of wheat breeding

materials from national and international (Nigeria, CIMMYT and ICARDA ) sources were tested in yield trials and observation nurseries across 7 northern states.

• 5 agronomy and plant nutrition experiments were also conducted at different testing sites.

2. In each of Mali, Mauritania and Niger, 150 entries were tested in observation nurseries and large demonstration plots.

Component 1: Generation of technologies & innovations

1. In Sudan, • Over 1100 wheat entries tested in yield trials and observation nurseries across the country, with an emphasis on heat tolerance and disease resistance,

• Seven experiments have been conducted on crop management, plant nutrition and mechanization.

2. In Ethiopia, about 500 entries were tested in yield trials and observation nurseries at lowland irrigated sites
