OReilly: When students arrive at NOMS, what will theysee?
Strasser: That really depends. They might see a traditional-looking classroom or lab. They could see a videoconference suite and computer, or they might even see amoose as they stare out the window of some remotecommunity health centre. NOMS does have two primarycampuses at Lakehead and Laurentian, but our students, staff, and faculty will be located across the north. Instead ofbricks and mortar, our primary infrastructure will becomputers, video conferencing, and broadband electronicconnections. Students in Deer Lake, Marathon, or KirklandLake will have the same experience as those in ThunderBay or Sudbury. That's not to say students won't be comingin to the main campuses — they will, especially in the firstcouple of years of the MD program. But as much as
possible, we want student training to occur out in thesmaller communities.
OReilly: So what has to be done to be ready for 2005?
Strasser: The primary goal before us is to achieve a fullyaccredited MD program. All North American medicalschools go through the same accrediting process, andNOMS is no exception. This is a significant challenge, onethat the entire NOMS team is focused on. To this end theNOMS Accredited MD Program Group is moving aheadrapidly. Work is progressing around admissions, facilities, faculty development, administration, andcommunication. It's a huge task building Canada's firstmedical school in nearly 35 years, but we are right ontrack. We will be ready come September 2005.
— Michael OReilly
