Local Funeral Director Rosedale Wins Top AccoladeRosedale Funeral Home has been named one of the UK’s best funeral directors by the GoodFuneral Guide. In its review of Rosedale the Good Funeral Guide says: “An outstandingly well runfamily business, highly professional but, top of the list, you’ll find here an exceptional focus onpeople. Quiet, kind, capable and utterly sincere. Good value for money, too.”
Charles Cowling, author of the Good Funeral Guide says: “To almost anyone charged with thetask of arranging a funeral, choosing a funeral director can be very difficult because they all lookpretty much the same. But they’re not. Some, a precious few, are truly outstanding, and Rosedaleis one of them.
“The Good Funeral Guide has recommended only those funeral directors who meet the moststringent criteria. Some of them are highly traditional, others decidedly alternative. Rosedale hasbeen chosen because the staff abide by the highest professional standards, offer all the choicesavailable, provide outstanding personal service, give clients all the time they need and representsuperb value for money. For far too long the work of funeral directors like Rosedale has goneunrecognised by all but a lucky few. People want to do their very best for their loved ones whenthey die. They deserve the very best funeral director.”
Rosedale Directors Anne & Simon Beckett-Allen say, “We are so proud to have been recognised inthis way. Rosedale often receive recognition for the work we do promoting environmentally friendlyfunerals and also for the resources we provide for bereaved children, but this accolade recognisesthe work that our staff do day in, day out, ensuring every family we look after is given the care andattention they need, and every funeral we arrange is special.”

I freely admit that none of the following is due to any research by me. It was at the instigation ofAlan D Clark, who pointed out that the above gentleman was born in Wenhaston in 1869 andbecame a famous Music Hall Artiste. Research undertaken by Eileen Heaps has enabled me towrite this short life story.
It would appear that Albert George Spink was born in Wenhaston in 1869, a son of George andHannah Spink. He toured the Music Halls as Peter Dandy George and Rosie, Rosie being a dog!He married Mary Beatrice Gregory in 1896, but she died in 1906 and he married again - EnaBertoldi, who was an Acrobat and Stage Entertainer and she died in London.
Dandy George and his dog Rosie starred in a short black and white film in 1927 entitled ‘DandyGeorge and Rosie’. It was made by De Forest Phonofilm. He died in 1947, but there does notappear to be any mention of him any further in the Wenhaston Archives so that it is possible thatalthough born in Wenhaston, he did not live here for any stretch of time.

Do you remember Rosie Harrison? You may find something of her spirit and her love of Suffolk life in thepages of Artichoke Hearts written by Rosie’s daughter in law SitaBrahmachari. Rosie was, in the words of her dear friend and poet CicelyHerbert, ‘A truly exceptional human being.’
She bought her charming weather-boarded, tinned roof bungalow inThorington in the scorching summer of 1976. As the late Dusty Flint herfriend and neighbour commented with true Suffolk warmth ‘You'vebrought that sunshine with you, Rosie!’
She was one of a group of artists, musicians and writers fromHampstead who were inspired by the big sky of Suffolk and thewelcoming spirit of local people. She had exhibitions of her own andher son Alex’s work in the Halesworth Art Gallery.
Her paintings, like Rosie, were joyous, bright, often quirky affordable jewels and she sold widelyin Suffolk. Somewhere in the houses along theselanes there are magical paintings telling storiesof Suffolk character: a stick insect being blessedat Blythburgh church, ‘The Pumpkin Garden,’laid out on the Flint’s front yard at Halloween,a portrait of the late Dan Del Rivo in her gardenenjoying a glass of wine, the plump pink-fleshedleg of a girl walking alongside one of Mr Peck’spigs, ‘Brenda’s Leaning Shed’ singing withwallflowers... a single yellow flower against ablue sky growing from the Dunwich shingle...
Sita Brahmachari will be signing: HalesworthBook Shop 11:30 - 1pm, Saturday 5th February.

News from the Bus ShelterIt came as a shock to receive the news onChristmas Eve that as part of the spendingcuts Suffolk County Council is going towithdraw subsidies on buses. Many buses aresubsidised as they are uneconomic to run. Thisincludes our 520 Halesworth to Southwoldservice which will cease from 1st April unlesssomething happens to retrieve the situation. It seems that yet again the people who canleast afford to run a car or who choose not touse their car to avoid costs of petrol andparking and reduce their carbon footprint willbe hit by cuts in services.

Turn Up The Heat On Oil ThievesSuffolk Police are issuing advice to help keepheating oil safe and secure following a numberof thefts of oil totalling thousands of litres.
Just a few simple steps can help make your oiltank and fuel more difficult for thieves totarget.
• Screen your tank with fencing or hedges• Close and secure any gates leading to the tank• Conceal or cover any external pipes and fuel lines• Install lockable caps supported by a closed shackle padlock• Regularly check your fuel levels. Sensors which monitor levels from inside the home are available• Consider installing a tank alarm• Join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
It should be noted that some oil storagecontainers are plastic and some are metal soany security measures which directly affect thetank or pipe work should always be installed inconsultation with the tank supplier.
Crime Reduction Officer Bernard Plume said,‘We’re all relying on our central heatingsystems and for those who live in more ruralareas it’s often oil-fired.If you’re leaving access open for a delivery, make sure the cap is locked after the fuelarrives.Large quantities of oil are often stolen, whichmeans the thieves will need sizeable containersto collect the oil in and a van or a largervehicle with which to take it away. If you seeany suspicious persons or vehicles in your roador a neighbour’s driveway, contact policeimmediately by dialing 999.We need people to be vigilant. Keep an eyeon your neighbours’ properties.’
Further information on oil tank security can befound on our website www.suffolk.police.uk orby calling your local Crime Reduction Officeron 01473 613500.
Mothers’ UnionIn January we held our CorporateCommunion and the AGM. Edward kindlypresided at both, and the officers andcommittee were re-elected en bloc. TheBranch Leader, Margaret Goldstone, reportedthat it had been an interesting and successfulyear. There had been a variety of speakersand fund raising activities, and monies hadbeen donated to Mothers’ Union charities. The Treasurer, Pat Kemsley, assured themembers that the branch had a healthybalance in the bank, and Pat presentedMargaret with a floral gift in thanks for allher work on the branch’s behalf.
The next meeting will be on 9th February, andinstead of a speaker, we will do somethinginteresting to entertain ourselves. At thismeeting we will be collecting for The UmbrellaTrust - the Mothers’ Union is supporting theirappeal for clothes for homeless people, andthey particularly need underwear - pants, and other items as well as socks and otherhosiery. There will be a box in church for thesedonations if non members would like todonate anything.
The church has a Jumble Sale planned for12th February. Please see advert on frontpage for details.
A Sensitive SubjectOn several occasions now children have comeinto school in the morning with their shoescovered in dog mess. This has then beenwalked around the school and embedded intothe carpets. Obviously this is a serious healthissue to pupils that then have to sit on thesesame carpets. We are very concerned that dogowners are not clearing up after their dogshave done their business and would suggestthat they might like to come into school toclean up for us - not a pleasant job!!PLEASE could dog owners be moreconsiderate and if their dogs foul the pathways- PLEASE clean up after them. Thank you.

Wenhaston WIWhat a jolly evening! Jane’s first meeting as president as our December meeting had to becancelled because of the snow. A presentation and thanks to Helen our out going president, now our secretary.
Our booked speaker had disappeared into the ether so a beetle drive was announced. Groan, groan some of us thought but it turned out to be great fun. The winner moving on as the firstcompleted beetle was announced, this proved to be a good way of meeting other members thatone didn’t know very well. Some hilarity as we discovered, on travelling around the room, that different tables were playingto different rules!Wine and refreshments that the committee had provided rounded off a very convivial evening.
Next month, Janka Marinakova will explain why she has a passion for alternative medicines.
