Terex Finlay, based in Omagh, recently hosted a three day dealer conference including new product demonstration in London, United Kingdom. The event was held from Tuesday, September 30th through Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 and attracted over 300 international dealers and customers from over 90 countries, worldwide.
A packed program of events included a business conference, live product demonstrations and an end-user open day.
During the conference, held at the Tower Hotel, London, delegates were in-troduced to the Terex Fin-lay business strategy and key focus areas for growth in the next three years. Key to Terex Finlay: growth and expansion plans is an aggressive new product initiative and development strategy which will see the business double its current product range in the same time period.
The product demonstra-tion events were located at OCL Regenerations, Dart-ford. OCL Regenerations are recognized as both
experts and leaders in pro-viding sustainable material solutions in the South East and were the perfect hosts during site preparations as well as during the two day site demonstrations.
The onsite demonstra-tions featured twenty re-cent product launches and prototypes of Terex Finlay models due to be released during 2015.
There were three offi-cial new product launches to dealers and end users at the conference: • J-1175 dual power jaw
crusher,• C-1540 dual power cone
crusher,• 693+ inclined screen
incorporating innovative Spaleck screen box. The dual powered
crushers are electrically driven, allowing users to run from electrical supply with the aim of giving sig-nificant savings on energy costs. These machines are also fitted with an onboard gen-set allowing the op-erator to move and use the machine where there is no electric supply giving the flexibility and versatility of current standard mod-
els. These machines join the 694+ dual powered inclined screener that was launched in 2013.
These product launch-es means that Terex Fin-lay can now offer opera-tors a full mobile crushing and screening train that can be powered from mains electric and has the flexibility to run self-powered if required. In applications where a full train is powered by the on-board gen-set configu-ration the crushers gen-erate sufficient energy to enable the operator to run the 694+ dual power inclined screen for ‘free’ when used in conjunc-tion with the J-1175 dual power jaw crusher.
The third new product launch was the NEW 693+ inclined screen incorpo-rating Spaleck screening technology. This exclusive screen features a unique flip-flow top and bottom deck guaranteeing first class screening of materials including; wet, moist, dry and mixed materials in-cluding recycling and skip waste, fines material, com-post, waste wood, timber, aggregates and ores.
The official launch of these three machines fol-lows a stringent and stren-uous development cycle

In 2014 Canyon Rock acquired its second quarry. The reason for this acquisi-tion was to provide mate-rial for rip rap, and stone, for the Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit project; a 70 mile long rail and bike-way which crosses the re-gion. The family owned company’s reputation for operating with optimal ef-ficiency was at stake, so it was essential that the com-pany chose the right prima-ry crusher; one that could handle heavy duty quarry-ing applications easily and for many years to come.
The essential problem for Canyon Rock, and many other such compa-nies, is that the market for
track mounted heavy duty jaw crushers is flooded at present. Many of the crush-ers available are excellent pieces of equipment, but complicating matters is the fact that many are not. For-tunately for Canyon Rock they were informed about the excellent capabilities of the Sandvik Construction UJ440i tracked mobile jaw crusher.A step-up from what we are used to
“The UJ440i is a step-up,” said Canyon Rock co-owner, Jonathan Trappe when emphasizing the machine’s strengths. “The chassis, the frame, the belt - everything is sturdier. We were looking for something
that would last a lot longer than a regular contractor’s primary jaw, something that would run well and last for 15-20 years”. The fact that the UJ440i crusher is able to efficiently turn out two finished products from the quarried rock was the real deal clincher for Canyon Rock. “The jaw can handle major open-ings,” stated Jonathan Trappe. “We can open it up and make finished rip rap. Other jaw crusher manu-facturers say the jaws can be opened to 200mm, but even that is pushing it.”
This is not surprising as the UJ440i possesses a jaw size of 1200mm x 800mm, and has proved capable of reducing large volumes of rock at high rates of pro-duction - up to 700 metric tons per hour. Push but-tons also operate the hy-draulic close side setting, which can squeeze the opening down to 100mm from 275mm. Addition-ally, its conveyor belts are
1350mm wide and sit on hydraulic drive units that can be reversed as needed.Cost efficient power plant
Power is provided by a 425-horsepower Volvo diesel engine that directly drives the crushing pro-cesses. The engine is able to operate without critical loss of power whilst con-suming a meagre eight gal-lons of fuel per hour. “The fuel consumption on the Volvo engine is absolutely phenomenal”, said Martin Keegan of Interval Equip-ment, Sandvik Construc-tion’s distributor for Mo-bile Crushers and Screens in the area. “We saw one working in Europe on our factory visit and even when the customer changed the Close Side Setting on the Jaw from 150mm down to 75mm on a very hard competent granite, the fuel consumption only jumped by half a gallon an hour. I have never seen such a productive unit compared to the fuel consumption.”
Practical deployment and use of the UJ440i is enhanced through the fit-ment of a 300 gallon fuel tank, which enables the crusher to process rock all day without interruption for fuelling. Yet, should
the need for interrupting the operation be required, emergency stop buttons are located at several ap-propriate places on the frame of the machine. This latter point is of major im-portance to a company as safety conscious as Canyon Rock. Seeing is believing
Before finally settling on their new crusher, Canyon Rock received many prom-ises from various crusher manufacturers. Sandvik were so sure of the UJ440i they decided to invite the Trappe brothers, Jonathan and James, to the UK, in order to see the UJ440i in action. Jonathan Trappe commented, “It meant a lot to receive an invitation from Gareth Orritt (Sand-vik Construction) to tour a Sandvik factory.” He con-tinued, “We met with the engineers who designed the UJ440i. It was key for us to see one in action, and after seeing how well one was running after 10,000 hours of operation, we knew that was what we were looking for.”
One of the features of the UJ440i that really impressed Canyon Rock was the pre-screen which enables them to make le-
gitimate splits of the rock material. The separate pre-screen is located between the pan feeder and the crushing chamber, mea-suring a mere 1125mm x 2100mm. It is topped by the stepped grizzly section with a maximum aperture of 100mm. Gareth Or-ritt, Sandvik Construction Business Line Manager, explains, “the pre-screen on the UJ440i is a superb addition for eliminating the fines quickly. Because of the large screening capacity up to 150tph, and the large screening area, it ensures that Canyon Rock put only clean rock into the jaw. This allows the screening plant further down the line to be so much more effi-cient in making the coarse rip rap products that Can-yon Rock needs to supply their customer base”.The only way was Mobile
When the Trappe family began quarrying some 70 years ago it was as a side-line to its dairy business, which Wendell Trappe’s father (father of the current managers / operators) be-gan operating north of San Francisco. From a small quarry on the dairy farm, the Trappe’s hauled occa-

With unconventional oil and gas operators seeking more flexible production equipment that can handle fluctuating conditions, GE Oil & Gas (NYSE: GE) re-cently announced the global introduction of its next-gen-eration Vector Plus variable speed drive (VSD) surface control system for electric submersible pumps (ESPs). ESPs are a widely used form of artificial lift that utilize centrifugal force to pump hydrocarbons to the surface, enabling high flow and en-hanced production.
ESPs and other artificial lift pumping applications are used in 94 percent of the roughly 1 million oil-producing wells around the world, helping lift hydrocar-bons to the surface in reser-voirs with low pressure and improving the efficiency of naturally flowing wells.
ESPs are widely used to aid production in with high-volume wells and operate, on average, 6,000 feet below the surface. GE provides two ways to control the ESP mo-tor from the surface—by us-ing either a switchboard or a VSD system such as the company’s new Vector Plus VSD and its predecessor, the Vector VII VSD. While switchboards allow the op-erator to turn the motor on and off, GE’s new Vector Plus VSD allows the opera-tor to gradually increase ESP motor speed and remotely adjust ESP speed from the surface with greater ease of use and improved intelligent control capabilities.
GE’s Vector Plus VSD is compatible with other GE artificial lift products,
such as Zenith Downhole Sensors and Field Vantage Solution, and incorporates other existing control tech-nologies, enabling GE to offer customers a cost-ef-fective, integrated solution.
“The introduction of the Vector Plus VSD illustrates GE’s commitment to con-tinually push the envelope to improve on our existing, proven artificial lift technol-ogies while also developing new innovations that will help our customers meet their challenging production requirements in the field,” said Jerome Luciat-Labry, President of GE’s Well Per-formance Services business.
“The Vector Plus VSD enhances the operator’s ability to more effectively control an ESP system, which is directly tied to in-creased system production and improved run-life,” said Richard Torbenson, Product Line Manager—Drives, for GE Oil & Gas.
“Our Vector Plus solution and other ESP technologies provide operators with crit-ical real-time equipment performance data, helping operators to make better production decisions.”Other key customer benefits of the Vector Plus VSD include:• It can be used with ESP
applications ranging from 100 to 1,000 horse-power.
• It is designed to work on all worldwide power systems rated 380-480 volts in both 50 and 60 Hz markets.
• It has an outdoor NEMA 4 rating, meaning that the enclosure is com-pletely sealed against the outdoor environment, to prevent the entrance of dust, dirt and moisture.Significant growth in the
global unconventional oil and gas space is a major en-ergy trend driving GE Oil & Gas’ innovations in artificial lift technologies, with the goal of offering operators the right type of solution to address the unique techni-cal and environmental chal-lenges of unconventional
wells. Unconventionals pro-duction, driven by shale ex-ploration and production, is expected to increase globally by 50 percent by 2018 alone.
GE made its first signifi-cant entry into the artificial lift segment with its 2011 acquisition of the Well Sup-port Division of John Wood Group PLC., a major ESP manufacturer. GE’s sub-sequent 2013 acquisition of Lufkin Industries’ beam pumps, progressing cav-ity pumps (PCPs), gas lift, plunger lift, hydraulic lift, reciprocating pumps and automation solutions allows the company to offer a com-plete portfolio of artificial lift technologies, depending on a well operator’s needs. In 2014, GE Oil & Gas consoli-dated all of its artificial lift of-ferings in the new Well Per-formance Services business.
As a result, GE is now among the world’s leading artificial lift solutions pro-viders, offering a compre-hensive range of pumping solutions to the worldwide oil production. GE is devel-oping technologies today to address tomorrow’s energy challenges. b
sional truckloads of rock to larger quarry companies. In 1972, the family began quarrying rock seriously when it bought an opera-tional quarry near Forest-ville, which is managed now by Jonathan Trappe. What began as an excava-tion site is now a full ser-vice operation, featuring a complete line of aggregate and recycled material, as well as an auxiliary divi-sion offering ready mix and concrete products.
The acquisition of the Cazadero quarry, how-ever, created the need for a new approach to mate-rial production, entailing the use of equipment that could produce rip rap and allow Canyon Rock entry into the market for the sub-base and erosion control material. During its previ-ous operations the Trappe family had become famil-iar through use of Allis-Chalmers aggregate equip-
ment, considering them to be good crushers. Sandvik subsequently purchased and upgraded the Allis Minerals product line, later named Svedala, with the family purchasing a Sveda-la H4800 cone crusher and then a Sandvik CH660 cone from local Sandvik Con-struction dealer for station-ary crushing and screening equipment, ACS.
Despite the excellence of the Allis-Chalmers, Svedala and latterly, Sandvik Con-struction static crushing and screening equipment, when it came to purchasing their new crusher Canyon Rock knew they required a mobile unit. This was es-sential as not only is the jaw crusher able to follow the contour of the quarry face under its own power as the quarry is blasted away, but also essential when there are drops and increases in the operating areas of the quarry. All of these elements are easily accomplished due
to the 74 metric ton QJ440i travelling on its 500mm wide, 4200mm long crawler tracks, which enables the machine to navigate a 20 de-gree slope.New addition aids productivity
After falling in love with the Sandvik UJ440i, the company acquired a Sand-vik QE440 mobile scalping screen unit to enhance the two-product output at Ca-zadero. The QE440 boasts the largest total scalping area in its class, and fea-tures three broad hydraulic material conveyors with high discharge heights for major stockpiling. It is able to produce up to 900 metric
tons per hour. “We are re-ally happy with the QE440,” says Jonathan Trappe. He acknowledged that the fami-ly wasn’t sure if the machine would be able to handle larger rocks conveyed to it by the crusher, but added - “It handles the tonnage the UJ440i gives it with no prob-lem, and has enough throw to clear itself.”First class support and advice
Helping the company enormously is the fact that Canyon Rock has long-standing relationships with Sandvik Construc-tion’s mobile crushing and screening equipment. This goes back to when
the Trappe’s first worked with Martin Keegan of lo-cal Sandvik Mobile Crush-ers and Screeners dealer, Interval Equipment, when he was a representative for Extec Screens and Crush-ers (acquired by Sandvik in 2007). Through this re-lationship Canyon Rock has grown to rely on the knowledge and support of somebody with experience in the industry, and who is able to provide aftermarket support. “We were wor-ried that parts would be a problem,” explains James Trappe, who manages the Cazadero quarry, who con-tinues, “When something goes down, we can’t be
shut down for a couple of weeks waiting on a part. Having a dealer who will stock parts and take care of issues that might come up was important.”
Being able to efficiently churn out rip rap in vol-ume is what drove the purchase of both the new Sandvik screener and crusher. Thanks to Sandvik Construction and Interval Equipment, Canyon Rock now has the critical pieces of equipment in place to meet urgent demand for the coarse rock, and vitally, the back-up which ensures that its customers get the materials they demand, when they want it. b

Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs Minis-ter Wes Sheridan’s work on the Hermanville/Cle-arspring wind development has earned him a place among Canada’s Clean16 leaders in sustainability and clean capitalism, says PEI Premier Robert Ghiz.
“This award is well-deserved recognition for Minister Sheridan’s strong leadership in expanding wind energy capacity in Prince Edward Island,” Premier Ghiz said. “He partnered closely with industry and the commu-nity to make our newest project in Hermanville/Clearspring a reality – and as a result, our province is on the cutting edge of clean, renewable wind en-ergy development world-wide.”
Minister Sheridan was selected from a pool of more than 550 nomina-tions to Canada’s Clean16, which is a subset of a larg-
er Clean50 group honoured this recently in Toronto. Canada’s Clean16 awards are announced annually by Delta Management Group to recognize individuals or small teams who have advanced the cause of sus-tainability and clean capi-talism in Canada.
“It is gratifying that we have been recognized among this select group for the steps we have taken to increase our province’s use of sustainable wind energy,” Minister Sheridan said. “Hopefully this proj-ect will pave the way for a more self-sustaining and environmentally respon-sible energy future for Is-landers.”
“The 2015 Clean16 are truly the leaders of the lead-ers in sustainability in Can-ada,” said Gavin Pitchford, Chief Talent Officer of Del-ta Management Group. “To be selected from amongst such a strong group of peers is truly a testament
to the contribution these individuals have made to helping make living well in Canada more sustainable for all Canadians.”
“Minister Wes Sheridan championed the develop-ment of the Hermanville/Clearspring wind farm, the latest addition to the prov-ince’s impressive wind en-ergy generation portfolio,” Pitchford continued. “Long known as a world leader in farming potatoes, PEI has now transformed itself into a world leader in farming wind.”
The 30-megawatt Her-manville/Clearspring Wind Development in Kings County was commissioned in January and an open house for the community was held in June. Com-bined with the North Cape Wind Farm and the Eastern Kings Wind Farm, it will al-low Prince Edward Island to produce up to 30 percent of its total electricity from renewable, emission-free wind power.
The project will also provide $350,000 through payments to nearby land-owners and a development trust for the community at large. b

Rio Tinto is set to cap-ture a crucial advantage in the recovery of mineral deposits, with the launch of its revolutionary three-dimensional mapping tech-nology to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of mining operations.
The new technology supports Rio Tinto’s drive for productivity improve-ments and cost reductions across its high-quality, low-cost diversified portfolio of assets.
In a world-first under the next phase of its industry-leading Mine of the Future program, Rio Tinto will be able to precisely identify the
size, location and quality of ore in real time by retrieving data from automated trucks and drills operating in its mines.
The RTVis 3D software provides pinpoint accurate mapping which improves efficiency of mining activ-ity by ensuring it is tightly focused on removing high value ore, significantly re-ducing both waste and op-erational costs.
RTVis creates 3D im-ages of mine pit activities that previously could not be measured. RTVis has led to greater ore recovery through sharper boundary identification, more accu-rate drill blasting, reduced explosives, improved waste classification and en-hanced dig rates.
Rio Tinto head of inno-vation John McGagh said, “This technology allows us to quickly and easily view, compare and evaluate data to paint a picture of what’s under the ground - it’s like an ultrasound image of the deposit delivered in real time, something that we
could never do before. “RTVis is a low-cost
application that comple-ments existing group-wide data technology in a way previously never available to enhance our mining op-erations. It quickly brings information to a much broader audience - from a single operator in the field to an expert team in the Rio Tinto Operations Centre in Perth.
“Armed with this de-tailed information, our op-erations to recover the ore bodies will be significantly more efficient and effective.”
The new 3D technology is deployed at Rio Tinto’s West Angelas iron ore mine in Western Australia and trials are also underway in other Rio Tinto product groups including Copper, Energy and Diamonds and Minerals.
RTVis also provides rap-id feedback on the impact to equipment while anoth-er important benefit is in the area of mine planning, providing much more cer-tainty about the nature of the ore deposit at an earlier stage of the process.
RTVis was demon-strated at the International Mining and Resources Con-ference in Melbourne in September. b

Dig with one end – load and carry with the other. It’s that basic functionality that drives the initial pur-chase of a backhoe loader. For the owner/operator starting a business, it’s the
perfect combination in a single machine. But that machine can grow with a contractor’s business and add greater functionality as needed – often forgoing the need to add extra pieces of
equipment (and the associ-ated owning and operating costs).
Read on for a few thoughts on options to consider when specifying a new backhoe loader for
added functionality, and then stick around for a few examples of backhoe flex-ibility beyond digging and loading. Options for Added Versatility
Backhoes are an excel-lent platform for many applications because the machines are extremely stable. They can often handle heavier and more complex attachments than compact and small-sized
excavators due to that sta-bility. And, as a wheeled machine, they have sig-nificantly less impact on surfaces than tracked ma-chines when turning. A few things to consider with each backhoe loader pur-chase that can help expand capabilities in the future: PowerLift
PowerLift increases the lifting capacity of the backhoe with the push of a button. This feature also decreases the RPMs of the engine to ensure smooth lifting and quieter opera-tion. Contractors find that backhoes provide an ex-cellent tool for lifting and craning, especially in utility and roadside construction applications. This feature can give a backhoe lifting capabilities comparable to a 7-ton excavator. Back-hoes that eliminate boom rebound (CASE offers ProControl, for instance, as standard equipment) further assist in precisely lifting and placing heavy loads. Extendahoe
The extendahoe is a popular option because it gives the operator greater digging depth and reach. The only performance fac-tor that changes with the
extendahoe arm design is that lifting capacities are slightly less than those on a standard arm. This is an important specification – lifting capacity – always know the machine’s rating for its configuration prior to executing a lift. Auxiliary Hydraulics
There are three con-siderations as it relates to auxiliary hydraulics in most backhoes (configura-tions may vary by manu-facturer): unidirectional hydraulics to the backhoe, bidirectional hydraulics to the backhoe, and auxiliary hydraulics for attachments mounted to the loader end of the machine. As it re-lates to the backhoe end of the machine, bidirec-tional hydraulics provide the most flexibility to run all attachments because hydraulic power flows two ways, ideal for use with at-tachments such as thumbs, augers and swivel buck-ets. Unidirectional aux-iliary hydraulics are fine if a contractor only plans on running attachments with one-way hydraulic flow requirements, such as breakers and compactors. If possible, find a machine that has combo hydraulics

KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens un-veiled its new GT206 track-mounted screen-ing plant during the 2014 National Dealer Conference, held Sept. 15-17 in Denver, Colo.
The new GT206 fea-tures a heavy-duty 20’ x 6’ inclined screen that offers more screen area and production potential than other
competitive models, according to Patrick Reaver, Product De-velopment Manager for KPI-JCI and Astec Mo-bile Screens’ Illinois manufacturing facility.
In addition to the larger screen, the GT206’s fines side con-veyor features a class-leading discharge height for increased stockpile capacity. Wide, fixed
catwalks allow for sta-bility and additional safety. Easy, ground-level access to all belt tensioners and ground-level grease points provide for easy and safe maintenance. In-terchangeable top deck options include mesh, bofor bars, punch plate and finger decks.
The addition of a larger track-mounted
screening plant to the Global Track product line provides dealers and end users with a cost-effective, highly productive and mo-bile option. The Global Track product line fea-tures quarry-duty, time-proven components and was developed to be the perfect rental tool and ideal for operations in remote locations. KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens is a premiere heavy equipment manu-facturer for the aggre-gate, recycling and con-struction industries.
“The inclusion of the GT206 to our Glob-al Track product line allows us to provide a more comprehensive offering to our dealers and end users,” Reaver said. “The GT206 is a larger version of our GT165 screen and it will allow operators to scalp at higher produc-tion rates ahead of or behind primary crush-ing operations.”

Minerals Technologies Inc. (NYSE: MTX) recent-ly announced that it has introduced NewYield(TM) Integrated Process Tech-nology, a breakthrough technology that converts a paper and pulp mill waste stream into a func-tional pigment for filling paper. NewYield process technology eliminates the cost of environmental dis-posal and remediation of certain waste streams to papermakers.
“We are very pleased to introduce this new process technology plat-form that will help pa-permakers lower costs and reduce their impact on the environment,” said Joseph C. Muscari, Chairman and Chief Ex-ecutive Officer. “We be-lieve that initially, the primary region for use of this new process tech-nology will be in China, where there is a concert-ed effort to reduce car-bon dioxide emissions.
This technology gives papermakers the ability to solve a waste disposal issue, while at the same time, provides them with a useable filler product in return. MTI and the papermaker will both benefit, as will the envi-ronment.”
The specific waste stream produced at pa-per and pulp mills is most prevalent in developing economies and is dealt with by either sending the waste to a landfill or adding significant equip-ment to the process. This method is both capital and energy intensive and increases carbon dioxide emissions. By utilizing Minerals Technologies’ NewYield Integrated Pro-cess Technology, paper-makers can eliminate the costs associated with landfill disposal or ener-gy, and in return will re-ceive a filler pigment that can be used in papermak-ing. b

which includes both unidi-rectional and bidirectional hydraulics for the most ver-satility and the least chance to damage unidirectional attachments.
Auxiliary hydraulics to the loader end of the machine expand the ma-chine’s capabilities to run attachments such as brooms, grapples and the iconic 4-in-1 bucket.
Auxiliary hydraulics, ar-guably more than any other option, help transform a backhoe into an all-purpose machine. A contractor may simply order the standard machine as a matter of sim-plicity or cost savings, but simply adding hydraulics to one or both ends of the machine can save signifi-cant money in equipment rental or purchasing down the road. It also saves con-tractors money because they may not have to bring multiple machines and/or multiple operators out to a job site to perform tasks that can all be performed with a properly outfitted backhoe. Couplers
Whether cab-activated hydraulic or manual, quick couplers on both ends of the machine will give contrac-tors the ability to run a wid-er variety of attachments, and simplify the process of switching between attach-ments. CASE has actually in-tegrated the hydraulic quick
coupler into the construction of the backhoe arm so that it does not affect breakout force of the machine, rota-tion or any other operating capacities (compared to af-termarket options). Counterweights
As it relates to equip-ment, weight = increased operating capacities. In the world of the backhoe, a little extra counterweight provides added stability that can prove important in utility and roadside construction applications. It also helps smooth out the roading process when equipping the machine with a heavier rear option such as an extendahoe.Lighting Packages
Backhoes can make money at night just as well as they can during the day – proper lighting allows you to do that. Look for a backhoe that offers adjust-able side lighting to im-prove visibility and jobsite awareness during night-time operations. 4-Wheel Drive/Ride Control
These features don’t break ground on any new functionality for a backhoe, but they do significantly improve operation in off-road and rough terrain job-sites.
4-wheel drive helps pro-vide stronger, more stable movement because all four wheels are engaged, and
ride control helps provide cushion to the loader arm when carrying a load – pro-viding a smooth ride and helping prevent spillage of material in the bucket. Grading
Backhoes aren’t the first machine that comes to mind for grading, but these machines actually offer an excellent platform for grad-ing. Look for a bucket with wear strips that are the same level as the bottom of the cutting edge. This is so that, when the bucket sits flat, there is contact through-out the whole range of the bucket rather than just the cutting edge. Backhoe load-ers are actually easier to use for grading than some other machines because they are more stable and they have axle isolation keeping the bucket in contact with the ground more than a skid steer or a CTL without hav-ing to put as much pressure down – which provides a nice finish. Compaction
Many utility contrac-tors rely on trench rollers or walk-behind vibratory plate compactors for com-pacting in trenches. By adding a hydraulic compac-tor to a backhoe, a contrac-tor can perform that task from a safe distance, rather than placing a worker in a trench with a compactor. It also negates the need to purchase a separate piece
of equipment. Pipe Lifting and Placement
Attachments made by companies such as Vacu-worx make lifting, handling and placing of pipe more efficient than conventional methods. It requires fewer ground personnel, elimi-nates the hassle associated with other methods of rig-ging (chains, straps, slings) and provides 360-degree rotation for precise place-ment – all without damag-ing materials or coatings. Get Tilted
There are third-party couplers made by compa-nies such as Helac that al-low for buckets and other attachments to tilt up to 180 degrees while main-
taining full functionality. This is particularly handy if digging on roadsides or in other tight environments. It also makes attachments such as augers and break-ers that much more versa-tile. Jobsite Clean up
Backhoes have excellent hydraulic flow going to the front of the machine. This makes it ideal for using any number of attachments designed for site cleanup, including grapples and brooms.Snow Removal
Whether with a broom, a snow blade or a snow push, backhoes prove ex-tremely versatile in this application, helping stock-pile, clean and then load
Continued from page 10 out large piles of snow. Get More
When purchasing a ma-chine, it’s easy to take the short view and focus solely on purchase price. But, in an industry where competition for jobs is fierce, it’s often the company that can run leaner and meaner that gets the work. Backhoe loaders are arguably more lean and mean than any other piece of equipment in the indus-try, giving contractors more options and versatility to expand their offering of ser-vices without having to buy additional equipment. Set-ting up a machine to accom-modate that extra capability at the time of purchase will only allow for greater suc-cess. b
Minister Aglukkaq and Nova Scotia Environment Minister Randy Delorey re-cently announced the renewal of a cooperative water moni-toring agreement between En-vironment Canada and Nova Scotia Environment. The Memorandum of Agreement for Water Quantity Surveys ensures the on-going collec-tion, processing, publication and distribution of water quantity data in Nova Scotia.
Over the past century, the
Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia have built an extensive net-work of water monitoring infrastructure to enhance the use of our water resourc-es. This renewed agreement advances our understanding of the availability, variability and distribution of water re-sources in Nova Scotia. His-toric water level data collec-tion contributes to scientific studies, ecosystem protec-tion, infrastructure design
and policy development. Real-time data is essential for flood and drought fore-casting, as well as for many industrial processes, agricul-ture management and elec-tricity generation.
The Nova Scotia network of approximately 28 water quantity monitoring stations has been co managed by En-vironment Canada and Nova Scotia Environment since 1975. This renewed agree-ment provides for annual operating costs of $460,000, of which 47% is covered by Environment Canada, 39% by Nova Scotia Environment, and the remaining costs from commercial contributions. b

The provincial govern-ment has invested $30,000 to assist middle and high school trades programs in New Brunswick.
The government has provided funding assis-tance in sponsorship of the Construction Association of New Brunswick’s Building for the Future Fund. The program provides tools,
equipment and materials for skilled trades’ courses.
“Our government is pleased to support proj-ects aimed at exposing New Brunswick’s middle and high school students to the skilled trades while providing them with an opportunity to explore fu-ture employment through apprenticeship programs,”
said Post-Secondary Educa-tion, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. “Our government is focused on connecting people with skills to jobs. That connec-tion must begin at the earli-est possible stage.”
The association began the program in 2008 in the Moncton Northwest re-gion. It has been expanded to include Saint John and Fredericton and provides supplies to 27 of the 74 identified schools in the province from both anglo-phone and francophone
districts.“Our members have
been a driving force in bringing this project to fruition,” said Construction Association of New Bruns-wick President John Mc-Donald. “With help from government we are able to collaborate with more schools, businesses and communities to provide the environment necessary to effectively introduce the trades to young prospective apprentices.” b
