SUPPLY CHAIN NEWS Volume 1 / Issue 1 / Summer 2012 KIER IN THE COMMUNITY OPERATION HOME FRONT COMES TO NORTH TYNESIDE Pathways 4 All, The Kier Maintenance North charity of the year, were on the receiving end of some welcome help during September. Operation Home front, which sees a group of ex-soldiers carrying out refurbishments to community buildings across the country, had chosen the charity to receive one weeks worth of specialist help, spearheaded by Kevin Godlington and a team of ex-army personnel. The Channel five TV programme rolled up on the 24 September to start what was to be a week of very intense work and some great partnering which highlighted just how efficient Kier, our supply chain and the residents of North Tyneside are when it comes to community spirit. The channel five team, with help from Kier and the supply chain, totally transformed a derelict building into a fully functioning centre for the Pathways charity which seeks to support children and families of those with severe learning and physical needs. Originally, due to the size and scale of the project, the plan was to complete half of the building work in just one week, but they had not accounted for the generosity and community spirit of Kier and its supply chain who: • Supplied and fitted two kitchens (Kier) • Gave two employees for the week (Kier) • Supplied two electricians (Gus Robinsons) • Supplied a taper (Decke) • Supplied a team of floorlayers for the week (Northern Floorcraft) • Supplied a joiner (Northern Interiors) • Supplied 10 Joinery apprentices for two weeks (North Tyneside Training Services) • Supplied 10 pre uniformed services apprentices for a day (TyneMet College) • And Last but certainly not least, JEWSONS supplied ALL building materials free of charge! I can’t thank Kier enough for all your help, you have been brilliant to work with and we would have been lost without you! CAROL HANLON – NORTH ONE TV ReSeaRCheR This would not have been possible without the help of Kier and their incredible supply chain KEVIN GODLINGTON – OPERATION HOME FRONT PRESENTER Operation Home front in Newcastle was not the only piece of work being carried out in the region. We also managed to fit in a complete Kitchen makeover at Peterlee Methodist Church, held two ‘Audiences with Kier’ at two of the regions colleges, supported students in Longbenton on a ‘world of work day’, assisted Justice Prince with an employability day, discussed how to assist a riding school for the disabled in County Durham and have produced a proposal for an innovative employer-led approach to work experience leading to apprenticeships which allows the employer to potentially mold a young person into a model employee. Since the Employer day in May we have helped 71 individuals from 14 companies in our supply chain achieve UKATA Asbestos awareness and manual handling qualifications. Four people from Warmseal have also signed up to level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety offered by Kier. Kier employees were joined on site by local apprentices from East Durham College and volunteers to complete the improvement works, which included the installation of new floors, ceramic tiles for the walls and a kitchen, donated by us, as well as painting and a gas and plumbing overhaul. The refit took two weeks and was concluded by a handover ceremony held on 27 September 2012. Members of our supply chain provided labour for the work including gas fitting and plumbing carried out by Pressmac and floor laying carried out by New Deck. Two students from East Durham Technical Academy gave up their time to tile the walls, and were presented with a £50 tool voucher each. Kier project skills & CSR manager, Terry Hanlon, commented: “Kier is delighted to have had the opportunity to assist the church in continuing to provide a much need service to the community and it was heartening to see so many people in attendance. The whole refurbishment was carried out by Kier and members of our supply chain who are all very community minded and the long term aim is to enable this wonderful facility to continue. I hope the church and community enjoy the kitchen for many years to come.” Representatives from the church, Margaret and Nat Watson, said: “This refurbishment has given our church a much needed makeover and we are so grateful to Kier for all the hard work the team has put in and for kindly donating a brand new kitchen. We have been very proud to have the whole community involved in painting and restoring the facilities. By working together we hope to have produced a centre which can be enjoyed by generations to come.” CHURCH GETS KITCHEN MAKEOVER!
