Operation Home front, which sees a group of ex-soldiers carrying out refurbishments to community buildings across the country, had chosen the charity to receive one weeks worth of specialist help, spearheaded by Kevin Godlington and a team of ex-army personnel. The Channel five TV programme rolled up on the 24 September to start what was to be a week of very intense work and some great partnering which highlighted just how efficient Kier, our supply chain and the residents of North Tyneside are when it comes to community spirit. Jewson were pleased to assist Kier in the build programme for a very worthwhile cause.

Whilst we may be a national player in building distribution we help to support local initiatives that are worth while.

It was a delight that we had the opportunity to support this build alongside Kier and many other volunteers.

To see the children at the opening ceremony laughing and playing in the Tim Lamb Centre was humbling.

A big well done to all who helped on the project!

dennis scarth — Area Director

oPeration home Front - DECKECharlie Brooks, the project manager for the series contacted Terry Hanlon from Kier for assistance with finding a Taper at very short notice. For Terry, the decision was easy as he had just been talking to a leading company in that very field.

Terry said, “I contacted George Beeby at DECKE who put me on to Jason Frank his senior estimator and within 15 minutes Terry Goodwin, one of DECKE’s tapers was on the phone asking for directions.”

Terry pulled up in his van and got straight down to work, and didn’t stop until he had completed everything that was asked of him.

George Beeby Managing Director of Decke said, “It was a pleasure to involved with Kier on the project and very gratifying to be involved in any community programme and to be able to assist such a worthwhile cause.”

During our 37 years of business we have continuously engaged with the local community by providing support in many different ways; and we were delighted to be asked to assist Kier with Operation Home front.

Jeanette Henderson — Director said,

“It was a pleasure for us to assist with such a ‘hands on’ initiative and also help to raise awareness of the Pathways 4 all project; and we are confident our workforce’s skills complimented those of the Armed Forces.”

As a company, our mission statement is focused around the development of our people and our community; we approach all of our operations in a spirit of integrity, mutual trust and cooperation.

Northern Floorcraft is one of the UK’s most respected flooring contractors having been established in the North East of England since 1973.

Kier contacted Warren Pearson, Director at Northern Floor craft regarding help laying and finding appropriate flooring. Warren said, “The team were delighted to be involved with the project which is going to help the local community in a big way.

It’s not often that you are given the opportunity to use your skills to help others in the community. They really felt a sense of fulfillment when they completed the weeks work. And I must say great team effort by all involved.”

The team involved with the project was as follows Supervisors - John Kirkbride, and David Rountree. Fitters - Brian Mason , Michael Prior, Gavin Young, and Mark Wharton.

Tyne Metropolitan College’s mission statement is ‘Raising Aspirations, Changing Lives’ and supporting Operation Home Front will do exactly that by having a positive and welcomed impact on the local community now and in the future. The Uniformed Services students who were involved with this project as part of their courses have to participate in a voluntary work experience placement and by taking part in this project allowed the students to gain great hands on, practical experience as well as supporting their studies. We are very proud of our students for taking part and would also like to say thank you to Kier inviting us to be part of the project.

emma Garrick — School Liaison Officer

Taking part in the Home front project with Kier was really positive because this allowed our young apprentices to gain vital work experience and see how a big job is organised from start to finish. The project also allowed our team of apprentices and tutors who are local to the community to give something back that is worthwhile and positive and I think in times like this it shows that when people have to pull together we can.

Our team has been involved from the start we provided labour to the site with up to thirteen apprentices taking part over the duration of the works programme and in this time we completed joinery tasks as well as helping out moving materials as and when required.

I think this has been a great success and the apprentices have really enjoyed themselves working along side other trades and professionals.

Paul Fairney — Work Based Learning Coordinator
