INTRODUCTION
Course Outline
This training course, designed and developed for employees working in supervisory positions,
includes 6 modules that define the Northwest Territories regulatory and specific supervisor
responsibilities; best practices in the identification and control of hazards; and practical safety
exercises.
This 2-day course will assist supervisors in maintaining the safety of employees and contractors.
Supervisors will examine their roles and responsibilities as leaders in workplace safety to ensure
they, and their employees, meet or exceed the NWT Safety Act, the Occupational Health and
Safety Regulations and the WSCC safety expectations.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Module 1:
Legislation, Policies, and Procedures
Apply the NWT Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations of the NWT;
Identify the role, functions, authority and obligations of a supervisor;
Identify the importance of demonstrating due diligence as a supervisor; and
Identify the role of the Internal Responsibility System and the OHSC
Module 2:
Educating Workers about
Rights and Responsibilities
Identify actions a supervisor must take to ensure compliance in the work area; and
Identify the responsibilities of a supervisor in educating employees about worker rights and responsibilities.
Module 3:
Exercising Hazard
Assessment and Prevention
Describe the supervisor duties and responsibilities in hazard identification and risk control;
Identify and apply the 5 steps of the Hazard Assessment Process;
Describe the appropriate hazard prevention tools including orientation training, safety meetings, and inspections; and
Identify the keys steps in the incident investigation process.
Module 4: Contractor Safety and
Project Safety Planning
Identify the role of a supervisor within Contractor Safety Management;
Identify the four steps of Project Safety Planning

Module 5: Documenting
Incidents, Injuries and
Investigations
Recognize the documentation required by the Safety Act and General Safety Regulations, and the Workers’ Compensation Acts.
Recognize a supervisor’s role in supporting a Return to Work Program.
Explain the supervisor’s role in the processes of incident and injury reporting.
Module 6: Safety
Leadership, Leading by
Example
Describe the fundamentals of safety leadership, supervision, and key steps to create a commitment to safety in your workplace; and
Select practical examples of how to set a good safety example as a supervisor.

Who Needs to Take this Training and Why?
This course is designed for anyone employed within the Northwest Territories who oversees the work of
others.
As an employee, you have the right to a safe working environment. As a supervisor, you have a
responsibility to ensure that the work and the employees you supervise are safe. This course is
designed to provide you with the information and guidance to support your role as a supervisor in
managing the safety of yourself and others in your workplace.
Course Evaluation & Exercises
There is no final test or exam at the completion of this course, but there is a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ component.
By completing and documenting the exercises outlined in this workbook, your knowledge and
understanding of the material can be measured and recorded. As you progress through this course,
please take the time to use the Participant Activity spaces provided to record your work. The instructor
will be checking your workbook at the completion of the course to ensure your understanding of the
course material and objectives. If you’re unable to meet the minimum pass requirement, there will be
follow up opportunities to complete this training.
