A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a

superlative adjective to describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of things.

FORMATION OF SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

THE + base adjective + –est / most. He is the shortestboy in my class.

Page 4: Superlative adjectives

-EST

The + Short adjective + est

SHORT ADJECTIVE: 1-syllable adjectives and 2-syllable adjectives ending in –y.

Tall + est = The tallest

My father is the tallest person in my family.

ADJECTIVES ENDING IN –E:

Large + st = The largestThis is the largest animal I have ever seen.

1-SYLLABLE ADJECTIVE (CONSONANT + VOWEL + CONSONANT):

LONG ADJECTIVES: 3-syllable or more adjectives and 2-syllable adjectives not ending

in ‘y’.
