Superlative adjectives

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a

superlative adjective to describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of things.

FORMATION OF SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

THE + base adjective + –est / most. He is the shortestboy in my class.

-EST

The + Short adjective + est

SHORT ADJECTIVE: 1-syllable adjectives and 2-syllable adjectives ending in –y.

Tall + est = The tallest

My father is the tallest person in my family.

ADJECTIVES ENDING IN –E:

Large + st = The largestThis is the largest animal I have ever seen.

1-SYLLABLE ADJECTIVE (CONSONANT + VOWEL + CONSONANT):

Big + g + est = The biggestI want the biggest apple.

2-SYLLABLE ADJECTIVE ENDING IN CONSONANT + Y:

Tidy + i + est = The tidiestJenna’s bedroom is the tidiest.

MOST

Most + Long adjectives

LONG ADJECTIVES: 3-syllable or more adjectives and 2-syllable adjectives not ending

in ‘y’.

Most + intelligent = the most intelligentSarah is the most intelligent student in my class

NOTE:

quiet → the quietest/most quietThis is the quietest/most quiet place I know.

clever → the cleverest/most cleverGrigory "Grisha" Perelman is the cleverest/most

clever man in the world.

narrow → the narrowest/most narrowThe narrowest/most narrow street is in

Reutlingen, Germany.

simple → the simplest/most simpleThe simplest/ most simple answer is most often

correct
