Diamond Grinding WheelsHarry G. Sachsel, C.A.E.

Certified in Abrasive Engineering

The 1A1-T is the “work horse” of all grinding wheel shapes. Straight type wheels are manufactured and available in sizes from 3/4” diameter on up to 48” and thicknesses from 1/8” to 12” wide. Wheels over 1” thick are made in 1” sections and bias ground in order so that it doesn’t leave any marks when infeed grinding.

G265G14

SUPER III1A1-T

DIAMOND

The “T” is the relief behind the Superabrasive wheel section so that side wheel grinding is possible. D.I.T. straight wheels are made for the application oriented conditions. All 1A1-T’s are checked for balance after finishing and truing. Final truing, forming, conditioning, and dressing is to be done when on the grinding machine spindle, as there is always a bit of, out of round, initially. This out of round condition is due to the wheel bore tolerance being .002 to .004 oversize, so that the wheel can slip easily onto the arbor, shaft, and or wheel adapter. Most arbors, shafts, and wheel adapters are also ground .0005 under size.

Once the Superabrasive grinding wheel is mounted check the O.D. for T.I.R. (Total Indicator Runout). This is easily done, by turning the wheel, by hand, against a solid object. Mark the spot or high spots with a black felt tip marker. Then either index the wheel 1/6th of a turn till the surface is more concentric or begin to true the surface with either a brake dresser, D.I.T. moly stick, D.I.T. diamond grit tool, or a motorized diamond roll dresser depending also on the Superabrasive mesh (grit) size of the wheel. Get a copy of how to do this from us for truing, forming, conditioning, dressing, and balancing.

DIT AC Hertz Variable Speed Controls

Since 1969 AC Hertz variable speed controls have been made available and improved with their flat signal output and lowering cost so that precision abrasive grinding R.P.M.’s now can be changed up or down from 60 cycles. Note, 60 cycles equal 5,500 S.F.P.M. with a 7” diameter grinding wheel. The wheel manufacturer makes the wheel to a specific hardness and porosity to grind at that speed so it could remove hard metals without burning. As the wheel wore down the G ratio dropped and the wheel wore out quicker. To overcome this the cycles and R.P.M.’s need to become higher. This can be done by increasing the cycles to 65, 70, or higher. The same can be done if the new wheel grinds too hot and burns or removes material too slowly. You now can have variable flexible control over the material removal for the first time.

The same applies for higher horsepower motors that spin at 1800 base R.P.M. or any other motor with a different base cycle.

Remember, a precision grinding machine tool is a profit center. Look into this option to make more productivity and profits happen.

The price of a product, service, and source of supply all become added in with its performance and its overall cost.

Before one is to purchase a Superabrasive product, to be used in manufacturing, a thought process needs to be reviewed. The objective to be achieved in manufacturing is to profit and grow. A precision abrasive grinding machine tool is a profit center. Therefore, a list of items and their cost should be listed. This includes power, water, payroll, taxes, raw materials along with consumables and other items which I haven’t yet listed. Possibly, advertising, insurance, telephone, reception, etc. The list is endless. But they all cost and have a price. Therefore, to become more informed, make a report as to what is happening with the profit center called the precision abrasive grinding machine tool and learn its productivity level. 880 volts, 3 phase, 60 cycles costs less to run then 440 volts, 220 volts, or 110 single phase and if you run on the 3rd shift it costs even less.

I bring this up as we in America are in a competitive situation, world wide, that requires a constant review in manufacturing.

The only reason I use a grinding machine tool as an example is that I have been a vertical distributor for abrasives for more than 50 (fifty) years and I know a little bit.

The profits are not in the grinding wheel. They come from and are in the entire system which includes the machine operator and where you purchase all the various items to make it a real profit center. Measure performance. To do this there are computer-ized systems that can give you this data. One is called a Monitech. “Put away your stop watch.”

Then, there is value to the whole endeavor. At the end of your information reviews there also has to be a mental value. Are you satisfied? Do you want to do it again? Was it a pleasure? Now, what needs to be done? This is where the fun begins. Something is about to happen. That’s called changes. With changes there is a chance for progress and life goes on.

Enjoy the day. I’ll write you soon again.

Our first book “Precision Abrasive Grinding in the 21st Century” was specifically compiled and written for those involved with precision abrasive grinding and also those that use them. The future will require a tremendous increase of precision abrasive grinding applications and their systems as more hard alloy materials, crystalline, ceramic, and strange materials need to be manu-factured as “normal” and present machining systems no longer can be used cost effectively. It’s written in layman’s language for all to learn and benefit. 680 pages and 250 plus chapters.

We Wrote the Books on Precision Abrasive Grinding.

Unlike the typical Superabrasive grinding wheel, saw, mandrel, and file catalog, I’ve written this to be a “Big Book” in such a fashion so that one has a larger more up-to-date picture of the potential possible from the Superabrasives (mesh) products available and the broad spectrum and selection possible.

The Superabrasive mesh (grit) may be the crystal cutting tool that does the removal but it is totally different than the typical tool steel or carbide cutting tools of the past. Also now in 2015, the focus isn’t just only on the Superabrasives and bond it is also on the related processes, systems, and equipment. These areas are what makes the material removal ability into a world class competitor. What made this all happen? It started with the Industrial Revolution of WW I with the needs to grind cutting tools made with tungsten carbide continuing with the demands of WW II for ships, tanks, airplanes, guns, cars, trucks, industry and manufacturing. Now it’s medical, aerospace, hard and strange man made materials, and evolution into the 21st Century along with electronics, drones, rockets, F35 jets, and more warfare.

The demand now is for greater productivity, more profits, hard and strange materials that have smaller dimensions, tighter tolerances, and lower surface finishes.

To keep up with all the new demands for jobs and become more competitive it will require

new and more education, knowledge, and changes in American manufacturing. Fortunately, the new American generation has that desire and will bring all this about. They need more, want more, know more, do more, and have our debts and takes to deal with. Also “Made in America” will spur them on with new businesses.

I hope this Superabrasive “Big Book” opens your mindset and makes it visual in order for you to make the changes your forefathers didn’t decide to do. Without future changes progress will not happen. That also applies to politics, hatred, jealousy, envy, ignorance, lack of education, lack of respect, lack of jobs, lack of desire, how you treat your women, how you treat your children, how you treat your wife and Mother-in-Law, and all the responsibili-ties that are yours in order to not to “War” which is a waste of profits, mankind, and the debts it brings about. History is proof so don’t do it again or let it happen. Democracy is not golden as there will always be a thief but it’s up to you to jail them.

“Good” hunting and have as good a life as I did.

Begin to visualize the details that can be implemented and how the improvement can be and will be. This is a process called imageneering. It begins early in your working career and it continues on thru all your many initial new jobs. Changes are at your finger-tips. Open your mind and picture the direction to take. The future is full of changes as they are the stepping stones for progress.

Work is the function taken to produce. The excitement is in the progress recorded and the new way manufacturing was done. A subjective attitude or a negative one will slow the progress down. A state of depression can do this also so try to avoid these conditions if at all possible. Discouragement can appear but ignore it. The initial thoughts are the objective, as it builds, greater accomplishments than are recognized.

This is how I think and believe. Again today 7/23/14 I heard the Vice President of a manu-facturing company say his senior die makers didn’t want to use an A.C. hertz inverter to change S.F.P.M. (Surface Feet Per Minute) on their surface grinding machine tools. Am I disappointed? No, I’m baffled and that I need to present the benefits better. I realize that most anything new and different is going to confront resistance therefore I’m going to send different examples for understanding the positive. The same situation happened earlier this month.

I e-blasted 1010 DIT Tech Briefs to part of our customers base. 210 opened them to read what CO2 carbon dioxide would do to control friction and heat during precision abrasive grinding. So far not one person called or emailed an inquiry to learn more. What is going on out there? Is the whole country in fear? What is the turn off?

On the other hand, two customers purchased static balancing stands lately. At least their precision grinding wheels will perform in a more positive fashion. Keep the faith.

THE DIT CO2 CARBON DIOXIDE COOLANT NOZZLE

The DIT CO 2 carbon dioxide coolant nozzle is the latest controlling factor wherever friction and heat needs to be minimized and regulated such as in precision abrasive grinding, machin-ing, stamping, drilling, or most any material removal process and kept bone dry and clean.

This DIT CO2 coolant nozzle with its fine dry snowflake spray (green) keeps your application cool, dry, and stable. Just hook up a siphon type canister of CO2 to the DIT coolant nozzle system, minimize the volume and shape of the spray, approximately two inches from the interface and the control of friction and heat is accomplished.

In dry material removal of most any material friction and heat is the hindering factor. Till now many other forms and types of cooling was used, i.e.: water, oil, vortex tubes, compressed air, refrigerants of many types but none of these controlled the temperature as well as CO2 bone dry right at the interface.

Seeing is believing. Cool, dry, and clean Carbon Dioxide is the additional controlling factor for increasing productivity. Call our Tech Services Department to discuss your application.

A manufacturing business does not change and grow without profits. They have to increase profits in order to pay their bills. Therefore, do what ever is necessary to create profits. Find a current need and fill it. Not just in a simple way but rather in a productive positive needed endeavor.

Because we are now in a world class environ-ment, a very competitive economy, seek out your competition and see what is necessary to not only improve your product but also to manufacture it at a lower cost. This can be accomplished by material changes, automa-tion, feeds and speeds and by using higher levels of precision abrasive grinding machine tools, advanced precision “high tech” abrasive grinding wheels, high pressure nozzles and

coolants, and or CO2 carbon dioxide which controls friction and heat “bone dry”.

A review of your precision abrasive grinding application can yield new changes in produc-tion which weren’t around twenty-five years ago. As an example, i.e.: carbon fiber, epoxy resin, dissimilar metals, carbon graphite, fiberglass, ceramics, metal/ceramic, nitralloy, titanium, nickel, chrome, and stainless alloys.

Focus on the related systems and equipment in your precision abrasive grinding applications as this is the most growing process in precision abrasive grinding manufacturing.

“The greatest risk of all is the risk of doing nothing at all.”

Superabrasive products made with CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) and or diamond, after more than fifty years, are still not really understood as to what, which, where, when, and how to use them in order to make them more profitable let along workable. There-fore, I wrote this Superabrasive booklet in a non catalog manner so to help you dream and think about your options. Almost anything is possible in order to material remove the hardest, gummiest, strangest material known to man with a Superabrasive. If you have enough time talcum powder can material remove diamond! But, for American industry time is of the essence! Therefore, you have precision abrasive grinding wheels, segments, saws, mandrels, files, hones, and many methods, i.e.: lapping, honing, filing, precision grinding, gentle grinding, electrolytic grinding, ultrasonic grinding, high speed grinding, creep feed grinding, CNC grinding, and all the related systems and equipment in dozens of types and manners.

Here are the various basic shapes and sizes to begin with. Then comes the review of your application and the challenge to perform. We know how and can do. Call us Toll Free 800-227-5905.

Just prior to WW II the use of natural diamond began to be used in resin and metal bonded wheels. Prior to this time black and or green silicon carbide grinding wheels was the norm in grinding tungsten carbide and other hard materials. Natural diamond was more expensive but it was more cost effective than with all the silicon carbide tool room grinding applications. Then in the late fifties in the Specialty Materials Division of General Electric development began to manufacture synthetic diamond.

G.E. is where the use of synthetic diamond began its rise as a Superabrasive. Shortly thereafter in the early sixties, CBN followed.

The progress of Superabrasive lies in the knowledge required to make it cost effective and profitable. That’s why I wrote my first book, Precision Abrasive Grinding in the 21st Century. And now soon to be published is book number two, Precision Abrasive Grinding Related Systems and Equipment. Only with education and knowledge can progress, productivity, and profit come about and increase.

Considering that it takes anywhere from 2 days to 3 months for the precision abrasive grinding wheel to arrive, there should be a process to receive them. The first is to sign for it from parcel post, U.P.S., Fed Ex, or a truck driver, and then take note of the packaging. Then unpack it slowly. Read the packing slip to see that it matches your purchase order. Then noting the condition of the inner boxing, card board packaging, and grinding wheel. Do this slowly as it could take a while to get another wheel. It’s a bit different if there are more than one grinding wheel but two can be broken just as one. With today’s speed of the transferring for fork lifts or conveyors damage is always possible.

Then, the grinding wheel or wheels should go to incoming inspection. This is the time to see if all is really well from a visual position. Vitrified bonded conventional and ceramic abrasive wheels are susceptible to shock and breakage. Then check sizes. Don’t assume anything.

For vitrified bonded conventional abrasive wheels it would be also good thinking to ring test them on receiving and prior to use as well. Store flat and secure with cardboard spacers between the wheels. Large diameters can be stored in the vertical position.

When trying to remove mid range and hard materials with conventional or ceramic preci-sion abrasive grinding wheels, saws, mandrels, or Superabrasive products grinding anything, that moves, R.P.M.’s should be changed. That changes the swarf shape, and rate. Cross feeds, down feeds, table traverse rate, coolants, high P.S.I., and power can all create motions. Then add to all this the strength of the grinding machine tool and the operator. You will begin to see, feel, smell, taste, and hear what precision abrasive grinding is all about. What still is necessary are past experiences, knowledge, and education.

The removal of hard, strange, steel alloy materials, crystalline materials, aerospace materials, carbide and or ceramics, carbon fiber, epoxy resin, dissimilar metals, graphite, and dozens more types is a human challenge with the addition of pulsations, vibrations, and harmonics which reduces production, stock removal, productivity and profits. These are some of the sundry other obstacles to deal with in precision abrasive grinding during the material removal process. The “Direct” form of material removal is the process to take. Why grind a cutting tool that requires regrind with an abrasive when it can be done “Directly”. It may require different related systems and equipment as well as different methods, processes, higher tech precision grinding machine tools, knowledge, and experiences but there isn’t any better way known to present ways.

In the meantime, pulsation, vibration, and harmonics have to be overcome and neutral-ized. This is accomplished by automatic wheel balancing in two planes, on the grinding wheel spindle with wheel and wheel adapter. Then, check everything else that moves or is in the immediate area. In extreme cases of dimension, tolerances, surface finishes get the temperature to a 68 degrees constant in 24 hours and never turn off the motion of the precision abrasive grinding machine tool.

Don’t overlook and assume that the concrete floor, leveling pads, and “Mother Earth” is solid and secure. Outside motions from other machine tools, trucks, and airplanes can contribute to unwanted action.

Surface feet per minute in precision abrasive grinding became an electronic variable reality in the mid 1960’s when Pacific Transformer, Inc. in California developed an A.C. hertz inverter. The PTI LSI 9000 inverter took the 220 volt A.C. 3 phase, 60 cycles power and converted it into D.C. In D.C. it changed the hertz cycles either up or down and once again sent the new cycles back into A.C. at a different R.P.M.

Prior to the A.C. inverter, grinding spindle motor R.P.M.’s were changed by rheostats, variable speed pulleys, different diameter pulleys, speed reducers, and single speed wound motors. Now the grinding wheel S.F.P.M. can be changed either up or down several hundred R.P.M. and thereby control the material stock removal, surface finish, removal rate, plus the production of friction and heat. This made it possible to remove very hard and strange materials quicker with different lower R.M.S. (surface finish). Variable spindle speed control also reduced burn, cracks, and improved tolerances. All around it was an improvement by also increasing production.

Since 1968 DIT A.C. inverters for precision abrasive grinding applications are different than ones used for controlling fans, conveyors, compressors, and other motorized methods that required different R.P.M. or S.F.P.M. The cycles going to the motor for precision

abrasive grinding requires a dead flat signal pulse in order to minimize vibration, harmonics and pulsation.

In years past in a die or mold shop grinding department you would see a wall of wheels, dozens of sizes, grit sizes, hardness, and different abrasive types. Now with a DIT variable spindle speed control S.F.P.M. reduces precision abrasive grinding and is more optimized and profitable.

Yet, you still can take a horse to water and he or she will not drink. So it is with some tool makers or their companies. The A.C. hertz inverter won’t be used as it isn’t the way we used to do it! So to help this along we have a 2 horsepower loaner to try out.

The swarf (residue) that is generated by precision abrasive grinding is like an MRI or X-Ray of what has just occurred in the material removal process. It’s as different as a fingerprint because it happens totally different each time. It’s different with CO2, wet, dry, or bone dry grinding. It’s different at different temperatures, infeed, down feed, cross feed, when gentle grinding, when centerless, cylindrical, internal, surface, double disc, Blanchard, electrolytic, ultrasonic, jig grinding, rotary, double disc, and planetary, at different speeds and feeds. The Superabrasive makes a difference. The materials being ground makes a difference. The operator makes a difference. The CNC and the robot make a difference. The programming makes a difference. Creating a low R.M.S. or tolerance makes a difference.

mesh (grit) size of the wheel. Get a copy of how to do this from us for truing, forming, conditioning, dressing, and balancing. There is quite a lot in the manufacture of Superabrasive precision abrasive grinding wheels. Core materials and choice are critical depending on the application whether it is a wet or dry application and the many CNC motions being generated. Example: In dry grinding, with a Type 1 or 3A1(hub one side), use a ceramic/abrasive core material. When wet grinding glass or crystals a bronze or steel core is more stable. When wet grinding carbide or ceramics a molded aluminum, bakelite, brown or green molded core, or solid aluminum core is selected. All this is necessary in order to develop the swarf generated in a consistent, continuous fashion. This is also why the grinding wheel O.D. has to grind within .001 down to .000 040 T.I.R. depending on the mesh size and bond.

SUPER III1A1-T

DIAMOND

The 1A1-T is the “work horse” of all grinding wheel shapes. Straight type wheels are manu-factured and available in sizes from 3/4" diameter on up to 48" and thicknesses from 1/8" to 12" wide. Wheels over 1" thick are made in 1" sections and bias ground. It doesn’t leave any marks when infeed grinding.

The “TMR” (Tool Makers Relief), is the relief behind the Superabrasive wheel section so that side wheel grinding is possible. DIT straight wheels are made for the application oriented conditions. All 1A1-T’s are checked for bal-ance after finishing and truing.

This is easily done by turning the wheel, by hand, against a solid object. Mark the spot or high spots with a black felt tip marker. Then either index the wheel 1/6th of a turn till the surface is more concentric or begin to true the surface with either a brake dresser, DIT moly stick, DIT diamond grit tool, or a motorized diamond roll dresser depending also on the Superabrasive

There is still a lot more to the Superabrasive wheel. Selection of mesh (grit) type, and size (screening and or micro sizing), their Superabrasive manufacture, bond, hardness, porosity, percent per volume, abrasive depth, molding, plating, baking or firing, finishing, and inspection.

16

The 3A1 Series Superabrasive wheels are a modified version of the 1A1-T. There is a molded aluminum hub on one side. This hub services several purposes. First, to increase the strength and stiffness of thin 1A1R’s, 1A1-T’s and other thin wheels when steel flanges are not used. Then also on plated and brazed coated wheels it increases the strength, rigidity, thickness to be able to fit a grinding wheel adapter properly.

Strength, rigidity, and balance are criti-cal when it comes to precision Superabra-sive grinding. To accomplish this hardened, ground, steel flanges are also a real bonus but if none are readily available order the 1A1-T’s with a side support hub making it a 3A1 style.

Now when a cut off application is one inch or deeper and it is flood wet grinding use DIT steel slinger style flanges. These are flanges with a milled channel around the outside and then straight holes are drilled from it to the outside diameter. The centrifugal force of the coolant now under rotary pressure gets to the bottom of the cut or slot and keeps the part cool. Another way to control friction and heat is with a DIT CO2 Carbon Dioxide coolant nozzle.

3A1 Superabrasive wheels are made in diameters from 3/4" to 8" and from 1/8" to 1" thick wheels.

Bore size is per application. All other specifications are similar to the 1A1-T type wheels, i.e.: hardness, bonds, abrasives, and porosity.

Precision abrasive ground steel wheel flanges are available from STOCK.

They have diameters from 3-1/4", 4-1/4", 5-1/4", AND 6-1/4" x 3/16" thick x 1-1/4" bore.

Wheel contact is on the outer inside area 1/2" tapered back x 1/2 degree.

This “E” shape series is made for angular and irregular shapes and thread /form grinding. Today, they are made in sizes from 1" to 24" in diameter and from 1/16" to 1-1/2" wide Superabrasive wheels. Bore size is per application.

Your choice is endless with all Superabrasives, mesh sizes, bonds, and shapes.

With all the choices in related systems and equipment, many new applications are now possible. Example, i.e.: CO2 friction and heat control, Unist and Acculube lubrication sys-tems, variable spindle speed control systems, pneumatic air bearing spindles, hydrostatic spindles, D.C. powered drive motors, motor-ized diamond roll wheel forming systems, balancing single and double plane systems as well as static and dynamic systems.

For the most part, these Superabrasive wheel shapes and sizes were once tool room wheels but now with new rigid, larger CNC precision Superabrasive grinding machine tools, large shapes and sizes can be precision ground and usually done with CO2 carbon dioxide, bone dry, and or flood wet with high P.S.I. coolants. Superabrasives make it possible to material remove and precision abrasive grind the most hard, difficult, and strange applications to dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes in short spans of time making it profitable. The future is to abrasively grind “Directly vs. Indirectly”

The “F” shape series is made for contour radius shape grinding, flute grinding, bearing raceway grinding, and for CNC progressive form grinding. They are similar to grinding with the “E” and “V” series wheels except the shapes to be ground are used in different applications.

Wheel sizes available are from 1" in diameter to 24" and from .006 to 1-1/2" thick Superabrasive wheels.

When ever there are shapes to be precision ground there will be lateral pressures. Side flanges are recommended. A.C. hertz variable speed spindle control is recommended to further the capability.

With the option of the various core materials and bond systems most any material can be abrasively removed with finite accuracy and finishes. The various shapes of this series make it possible to shape grind precision forms quickly with great latitude. Time is of the essence. In order to be competitive, productive and by having these various form wheels this will make it possible.

Note: When removing all forms of Superabrasive wheels from the grinding spindle mark the end of the spindle and a corresponding marker on the wheel adapter so when remounting to the same machine there will not be any out of round (T.I.R.).

The “V” shape is the third of a series of precision Superabrasive contour grinding wheels. Just as with the “E” and “F” series wheels, these diameters range from 1" to 24" and thicknesses from 1/8" to 1-1/2". The selection of this shape is to be able to grind one side of a dimension with clearance on the other side. Note: Not all Superabrasive wheel manufacturers have all the molds, machining, or size capability to make the necessary wheel dimensions.

The angle dimension on the O.D. can be specified from shallow or to very sharp. To be able to make or supply this, it is not always possible to have the same angle also on the core. Therefore, in this case a 1A1-T wheel is made and then the specific angle on the O.D. is form ground on it.

When ever side wheel pressures form, from precision grinding, side wheel flanges or hubs are necessary. Precision abrasive grinding wheel adapters should be of the balancing type in order to get to a lower tolerance and R.M.S. quicker. Core material used should be extra strong. Copper, bronze, solid aluminum, or even steel should be selected. This also applies to “E” and “F” series Superabrasive wheels.

The 1A1-R series is the cutoff, slotting, and thinnest Superabrasive wheel used in material removal. The kerf can be had in increments of .001 and, therefore it can do the most precise, narrowest wheel cutting or grinding. The 1A1-R Superabrasive wheels are made with hardened and ground steel cores and tensioned/smithed/dished in order for them to attain a stiffness at speed and cut straight. To further be able to cut straight a full radius is shaped/ground on the O.D.

1A1-R’s require a relief behind the abrasive depth of at least .002/.003 per side in order not to rub the side walls and more so on large blades and coarse mesh (grit) blades. Thickness sizes range from .006 thick to

5/16" in increments of .001 on precise blades. Diameters from 1/2" to 60" wheels can be slotted and back or front taper ground. Thinner ring wheels down to .004 are coreless and flange mounted.

Bonds are resin, copper resin, polyimide, Hybrid, metal, metal vitrified, hot pressed, single layer plated or brazed, and abrasive mesh spaced or porous bonded with ceramic sphears. Bonds are also made for wet, dry, or CO2 Carbon Dioxide cutting.

I.D. or annular diamond bonded and coated blades are also available in various thicknesses as well as diamond coated band saw blades.

This 2A2-T series is a cylindrical ring shape with threaded mounting holes in order to be mounted to a grinding wheel ring mount on the many various vertical precision abrasive grinding machine tools. The various Super-abrasives and their bonds are bonded on the rim face.

Rim wheel diameter, sizes, range from 8" to 30". Rim widths range from 1/2" to 2". Depth of Superabrasives are from 1/8" to 1". 2A2-T ring wheels are made for the specific grinding application and their precision abrasive grinding machine tools. Various type and size ring wheel adapters are available and quoted on application.

Continuous bonded rims, segmented rim sections, round and oval buttons, slotted, plated, and brazed coated are available. When heavy stock removal or need for more coolant flow is required, use a slotted face or round and oval buttons. All bonds and Superabra-sives are available.

When ordering a 2A2-T Superabrasive wheel, for a specific grinding wheel mount, a pattern of the mounting holes needs to be supplied so that they are spaced, drilled and tapped correctly.

During 2A2T ring wheel mounting, use some thin metal shim stock, to level the face and check the T.I.R., by rotating the ring by hand against a solid object.

Superabrasive segments are a P.S. to the 2A2-T ring wheels. They are specially made for vertical spindle machine tools that do segment grinding such as Blanchard grinders, Matteson Machine Grinders, and many others. Instead of using conventional abrasive seg-ments, the use of Superabrasives are required because of the application. Fax or Email your application.

The 9A3 type wheel is a double sided rim, plain cup face grinding wheel, designed and made usually for Swiss carbide tool grinding applications..

This wheel is a 6" or 7" diameter. Rims are usually 1/4" wide but also available in 3/8" and 1/2". Wheel thickness is 1" maximum. Bore size is to be determined and are usually in a metric dimension as most Swiss machine tool grinders are foreign made.

Resin bonds are selected for finishing the carbide Swiss cutting tools. Finish grinding diamond wheels are usually 500/600 mesh. Also preferred are 800, 1000, 1200, and 1800 mesh diamond abrasive sizes. For these fine mesh sizes use 75 concentration. Metal bonds are usually 220 mesh in order to hold a sharp corner. Other size synthetic diamond mesh

used are 100/120, 150, and 180 and with 100 concentration. Diamond depth in U.S.A. is 1/8". Core material is solid aluminum, molded aluminum, or steel. The U.S.A. made Swiss tool grinder is a Model A Hager carbidecutting tool grinder.

The 9A3H is made for the Model B Hager carbide cutting tool grinder. It is the same as the 9A3 Model A except it has 5 mounting holes, 4 on a bolt circle and a 5/8" or 1-1/8" I.D. bore.

Always double check grinding machine tool mounting dimensions for special changes.

9A3 series wheels are used wet with straight oil or water soluble coolants. Use uncoated synthetic diamond for finishing and metal bond type diamond in the metal bond wheels.

The 11A2 is the third most widely used cutter grinding Superabrasive wheel behind the 11V9 and the Type 1A1-T’s. It is also known as a flaring cup type wheel except the abrasive section is a wide straight rim, on the front face, parallel to the back.

Wheel diameters begin with 3", 3-1/2", 100 mm 4", 5", and 6"

Wheel thicknesses are 7/8", 1-1/4", 1-5/16", 1-3/4", and 2"

Rim widths are 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8"

Back thickness 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2"

Inside flats are 1-3/4", 2-1/4", 3-1/8" and 3-1/2"

Abrasive depth is 1/8" and 1/4"

Core material is molded aluminum or solid aluminum which is preferred

Bore size is to be determined per application

The 11A2 is primarily used on manual single lip tool and cutter grinders such as Deckel, Kuhlmann, and other foreign made grinding machine tools. Harig, K. O. Lee, Cincinnati, and Brown and Sharpe and Gorton tool grinders are American made.

The 11A2 is primarily used dry and on light horsepower tool and cutter grinders so use a light coated Superabrasive mesh such as a MDS diamond abrasive which is 30% pervolume nickel coated. Use a N hardness in the bond and with 100 concentration. Use 75 concentration on fine mesh Superabrasive wheels for extra chip clearance.

Superabrasive Mandrels

With the advent of hard and small parts, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes, small diameter mandrels were required. One major application was in jig grinding where small holes were necessary in an exact X Y position. This brought about the Moore pneumatic and or the German Hauser electric powdered jig grinders. Then also was the demand for I.D. grinding capability, tool post grinding, drill press internal grinding, and form grinding with thousands of additional applications.

Therefore, an inventory list of specific Superabrasive diameters and lengths was developed unlike wheels, segments, saw blades, hones, and hand files with their huge range of inventoried products. Here also all bonds, mesh sizes, concentrations, hardnesses, porosity, and single layer coatings are available. Standard sizes are as follows:

Balance and S.F.P.M. (Surface Feet Per Minute)is a “New Window” in Precision Grinding

Isaac Newton had the key when he said “For each action there is an equal and opposite reaction!” Here in the 21st century, in precision grinding, the same rule applies. Almost daily, there are new composite epoxyresin type materials: crystalline, ceramic, metallic ceramics, and difficult to grindsuper hard steel alloys. Precision grindingis one of the only ways to shape and remove these materials. Conventional grinding machine processes which use Premium Man Made® diamond wheels and CBN BORAZON® wheels find the task more difficult with each new application. The basic machine process is correct but needs to be approached in a more flexible and sub-micron removal rate system. The standard ball bearing grinding spindle may need to be changed to an air bearing spindle.

The reason for this is spindle stiffness needs to be increased. An air bearing spindle hasmore than ten times the stiffness of a ball bearing spindle. Then, a new laser wheel balancing system needs to dynamically balance the grinding wheel. Balance becomes more of a critical factor as the chip load changes. Chips need to be precise and concise. A variable speed spindle control system should be added. Most materials will need to be ground at different S.F.P.M. (Surface Feet Per Minute) as their hardness, structure and density requires a different material removal rate.

Harry G. Sachsel, C.S.E., Certified in Superabrasive EngineeringCall Toll Free: 800-227-5905 • Fax Toll Free: 800-441-7771 Email: [email protected] • Website: www.todit.com

Depending on the machine tool and it’s down feed capability, a CNC down feed control may also be required. Down feed rates of one to ten millionth may be necessary (.000,010). These are some of the new basic processes to be added in order to address the fabrication of various new materials.

The coolant filtration system needs to beaddressed as the recirculation of the swarfmay hinder the process and end results.Coolant pump and nozzles require reviewing as coolants need increased PSI and GPM’s to flow at the same speed as the S.F.P.M. of the grinding wheel.

New wheel core materials such as epoxyresin, bronze, solid aluminum alloys, 400series stainless and other dense materialsadd to increased performance.

New, highly lubricic coolants have to bechecked daily. Some materials may just need filtered straight water or special waterless coolants.

The chucking, clamping, and holding hasto be addressed for sensitive materials and parts. Freezing, vacuum, magnetic, and/or sensitive super precision vises may be required.

Just with these few examples you can see the new world of abrasives that will needimprovements to fabricate the materials of the near future.
