How do you make fluorophores blink?

Alexa Fluor and ATTO dye photochemistry in a reducing environment. The

standard blue absorption disappears and the dye becomes dark

(doi:10.1038/nprot.2011.336).

STORM buffers. Certain dyes can be made to blink in some (rather harsh) highly-reductive buffers that are depleted of molecular oxygen (Beta-mercaptoethanol -- Glucose, Glucose Oxidase and Catalase --Cyclooctatetraene).
