At SUNY Orange, we believe that “if you have the dream, we have the way!”

But, what is your dream? And how will you get there? Often times it is difficult to express your ambitions and goals, and it may be even more challenging to figure out the best method for achieving them.

You may desire financial independence … never having to worry about money. Or it could be professional prosperity … building or managing a profitable and successful business. Maybe it’s personal satisfaction … working in a career that you truly enjoy. Or it might be family enrichment … establishing a firm foundation for your spouse and/or children. Or perhaps you value the quest for knowledge ... gaining an understanding of the world we live in and your place within it.

You want to grab the brass ring, but aren’t sure how. Everyone has told you a college degree is essential in today’s world. But, what makes sense for you, your situation and your dreams?

Should you go directly to college from high school? Are you an adult who has been away from the classroom for a few years, or more? Do you need to juggle your schooling around a full- or part-time job? Can you manage to attend college full-time or will you be limited to a course or two each semester? Is an associate’s degree your best solution or do non-credit classes suit your needs better? Whether you have the answers to these questions already, or are still searching for solutions, SUNY Orange can help you investigate your options.

Welcome to SUNY Orange, where opportunity meets success.

dId you know? Approximately 48 percent of SUNY Orange’s students receive some form of financial aid, including grants, loans, work-study and scholarships

save for your future

“If you don’t want crippling debt and want to graduate from a good architectural technology program, I’d absolutely recommend SUNY Orange because you will be welcomed into a program where every single credit will be accepted at another school and you will save yourself thousands of dollars. And that’s the case with many of the other programs at the College. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely go back to SUNY Orange for two years.”

ome folks may try to convince you that you need to pay top dollar for a quality education. That simply isn’t true.

SUNY Orange boasts many strengths, from its superb faculty to its diverse curriculum to its outstanding student support services. But, one of the College’s strongest attributes is its minimal impact on your financial “bottom line.”

SUNY Orange offers a quality education at an affordable price. When you crunch the numbers, you will see exactly how strong we are.

As you research college costs, you will notice that spending two years at SUNY Orange prior to transferring to a private four-year college or university will slice more than $60,000 off your four-year tuition bill (based on 2010-11 figures from The College Board). Keep in mind that the College also offers generous financial aid packages that include federal aid, state aid, scholarships, work study, loans and grants, as well as a tuition payment plan.

The support that the College receives from many sources, including Orange County, helps SUNY Orange to keep tuition low, allowing you to secure the education you need at a price that fits your budget.

Annually, SUNY Orange students receive more than $6 million in funds. A portion of these funds comes from state and federal government programs such as the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program, and Vietnam and Persian Gulf Veterans Tuition Assistance programs. The College’s financial aid staff is fully prepared to help you discover the many available methods for further defraying the cost of your education.

The College offers an array of academic and athletic scholarships, and is committed to increasing its scholarship endowment fund significantly so that a far greater number of SUNY Orange students may receive aid in the future.

SUNY Orange professor John Wolbeck, a 1983 graduate of the College, is known as an instructor who brings his classroom to life. But, what he also does is prepare the College’s engineering students to tackle the challenges they will face when they transfer to another college or university.

SUNY Orange’s engineering program is considered one of the finest two-year programs in the Northeast, with graduates routinely accepted—and presented with prestigious scholarships—at such renowned engineering institutions as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Clarkson and Manhattan.

“We have actually had high school students from Orange County who were trying to enroll in engineering

very journey begins with a first step. At SUNY Orange, we realize that your pursuit of your goals and ambitions will indeed be a journey. As you map your future, you need to assess the best method for reaching your destination.

A SUNY Orange degree will serve you well in many ways. Would you like to bypass entry-level positions? An Associate in Applied Science degree will provide you with the in-depth training employers in many technical fields desire. Or, do you wish to acquire your bachelor’s degree? You can attend SUNY Orange feeling confident that all, or most, of your credits will transfer to a four-year college or university, meaning you will remain on track to complete your studies in four years.

The chart at right indicates a sampling of the four-year colleges and universities to which SUNY Orange graduates have transferred. The College has established transfer agreements

with many colleges and universities to facilitate smooth transitions for our students because we are committed to insuring that your “next step” after SUNY Orange is the right one as well.

Occasionally, your journey may involve a detour or wrong turn. Are you eager to quickly tackle a new professional or personal challenge? Are you presently in a career that you find unrewarding? If so, you may need a swift solution, and perhaps a two-year degree program doesn’t fit your needs.

For you, SUNY Orange offers a selection of certificate programs to help you develop job entry skills or facilitate a career change. These accelerated programs, designed to be completed in one year, can prepare you for technically trained positions in business, engineering technologies, education, corrections and security.

SUNY Orange can offer students a chance to secure a bachelor’s degree in certain programs without ever leaving Orange County, thanks to

our relationship with Franklin University and its Community College Alliance. Our participation in the Hudson Valley Educational Consortium brings emergency response and innovative technology degree programs from other colleges in the area to the classrooms of SUNY Orange.

programs at some four-year schools get referred back to us. Engineering faculty at those schools have said our program is ‘the best-kept secret’ in Orange County.

“Our students come here, are put through a tough program and come out, many times, more prepared than students who begin at those four-year schools."

In recent years, SUNY Orange graduates looking to transfer have landed scholarship and award packages in excess of $50,000 from prestigious engineering schools.

“Why wouldn’t you want to come to SUNY Orange first? You will get a good degree at an affordable price. And you will be as qualified, if not more desirable, in the eyes of those four-year engineering schools.”

advance your career one are the days where lectures and term

papers fulfill your educational obligations. At SUNY Orange, you’ll be immersed in every aspect of your chosen academic program, and you’ll graduate with a firm grasp of the “tools of the trade.” And you will be ready to tackle the first step on your career path with confidence.

SUNY Orange is committed to providing additional “experiential learning” opportunities. For example, accounting students have assisted community members with filing their taxes, engineering students have developed a solar-powered car and boat, biology students participate in local water monitoring and art students learn the business side of art by partnering with local artists.

If you are interested in one of the College’s eight health professions programs, you can be

G assured of the highest-quality clinical experience available. Already employed full-time and considering a return to the classroom? Many employers offer tuition reimbursement so be sure to check with your Human Resources officer to discover if that benefit exists at your company.

If you think you’d prefer to tackle your professional or personal growth in a different fashion, you may wish to take non-credit courses

through our Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE) programming. Do you need to brush up on a computer software program? Are you interested in become a certified pharmacy technician? Or does a possible career in one of the emerging new “green” professions excite you? Our continuing education offerings are as varied as your interests and needs.

Nilda Oyola, who earned her business administration degree at SUNY Orange in May 2010, was recently named national sales and marketing manager for Majestic Drug, a manufacturer of niche oral care and personal products.

The promotion comes 23 years after she first joined the company as a receptionist. Over the past two-plus decades, she has steadily risen through the company’s organizational and administrative ranks, occupying roles of increasing responsibility with each new post. She was elevated to assistant to the president, office manager, head of accounts receivable/payable and head of international customer service before accepting her newest position in April 2011.

While pursuing her degree at SUNY Orange, she was named to the Dean’s List in each of the four semesters in which she was eligible. She was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community college students, and she accomplished all of this while working fulltime at Majestic.

“I really felt at home at SUNY Orange. When I started at SUNY Orange, it was about advancing my career, but it quickly turned into a very fun experience,” she says. “I sort of became a mom to the 18- and 19-year-olds in my classes, and suddenly became ‘cool.’

“In the classroom, I understood what the teachers were teaching, and I got it. I had an advantage of having real-world experience. When the professors were giving examples, it was more than an example in a book for me. Nine out of 10 times, it was about someplace I’d been or something I’d done.”

Today, Oyola is continuing her education at SUNY New Paltz and plans on ultimately acquiring a master’s degree in business administration.

Each day that he journeyed to SUNY Orange’s Newburgh campus, Jarrett Price (at right in photo) watched the evolution and construction of Kaplan Hall. From a giant hole in the ground—which would ultimately house the building’s underground parking garage—to truckloads of cement to huge steel beams, he saw it all from the sidewalk as he passed the construction site en route to the Tower Building.

Once Kaplan Hall was framed and enclosed, the changes were not so apparent, so Price had to imagine for himself what shape the building was taking internally. When he joined his classmates in the building for the first time in January 2011, he immediately sensed a change.

“The new campus encourages current students and future students, and gives them more hope for the possibilities of their future,” he says. “When students see this campus, they have a different approach not only to their life, but their schoolwork and what they might want to do with their life after high school.”

“Studying in this building is an amazing feeling. I love the building. It is a nice positive piece for Newburgh and the College.”

a growing campus close to home

our academic success comes when you are immersed in an environment that allows for academic exploration and presents you with the tools to foster that exploration. If you can quickly and easily travel back and forth to classes, leaving more time for studying or collaborating with classmates, you are likely to be even more successful.

SUNY Orange continues to grow in response to the needs of its students, offering campuses in both Middletown and Newburgh to help you achieve your academic goals. Each campus holds its own unique charm.

If you live on the eastern side of Orange County, you will be awestruck when you walk through the doors of Kaplan Hall, a brand new

state-of-the-art classroom building that recently opened in Newburgh. The building features the latest amenities in its labs, classrooms and study spaces, as well as a safe and secure underground parking garage that provides easy access to the campus.

SUNY Orange is now offering seven full degree programs in Newburgh, meaning you can complete all of your degree requirements there without traveling to Middletown.

However, if you choose to utilize the Middletown campus, you will stroll a bucolic campus with a beauty that belies its city address. The 37-acre campus is located on the beautiful and picturesque grounds of a historic estate, with 14 buildings standing ready to welcome you.

Growth is about to reach Middletown as well, as construction of a new Lab School will begin this Fall with completion of a planned 95,000-square-foot Center for Architecture, Science and Engineering to be complete in Summer 2014.

With its picturesque beauty, cozy confines and contemporary functionality, the SUNY Orange Middletown campus has become a comfortable second home to students who seek academic challenge, friendship and lively activity.

Once you step onto either of our campuses, you’ll instantly feel as if they were designed specifically for you.

find your inspiration

A If leadership is in your blood, you can seek election to the Student Senate, where you will actively contribute to student initiatives, or join the SUNY Orange Ambassadors, a highly visible group that assists the Admissions Office by providing a student presence at many College events.

If you are a performer at heart, you can shine as part of the Apprentice Players, the College’s theatre group. Or, you can find a home in one of several performance ensembles (madrigal singers, orchestra, symphonic band, jazz band or choir) directed by the Arts and Communication Department.

If you are inspired by a higher level of learning, you may inquire about the SUNY

Orange Honors Program. Students in this program are highly motivated and talented students seeking opportunities for personal growth, educational discovery and academic achievement through advanced coursework, community service and an independent research project.

The College also offers intercollegiate athletic teams for men in tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer and golf; and for women in volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball. There is also an extensive intramural program for all students, operated by the Movement Science Department.

t SUNY Orange, you will be introduced to a vibrant array of campus happenings and organizations, giving you ample opportunity to find your inspiration both inside and outside the classroom. Many of the College’s student organizations are clubs formed within academic disciplines, allowing students in those programs to develop out-of-the-classroom experiences that augment their lecture-based learning.

Aside from academic groups you will have the chance to immerse yourself in clubs, service organizations, athletics and intramurals. And if you can’t find a club you want, you are free to form one with fellow students who share your same interests.

This past Fall, Meghan Maney enjoyed the rare opportunity to partake in a prestigious program with internationally renowned sculptor Greg Wyatt, whose bronze sculpture “Soaring American Eagle” graces the courtyard of the State Department in Washington, D.C. Maney was one of two SUNY Orange students who joined Wyatt in New York City in the “Meritorious Scholarship: Sculpting in Wax and Casting in Bronze” internship. Under Wyatt’s direction, Maney learned how sculptors prepare and pour bronze statues and artwork.

She also created her own bronze sculpture (shown in photo) cast at the Modern Art Foundry and will have it included in an exhibit that Wyatt has planned at New York University this fall. Wyatt was so impressed with Maney’s work that he renewed her scholarship for 2011.

She has also had a creative print design selected to adorn the cover of a pamphlet that will be given to visitors at the Zane Gray Museum in Lackawaxen, Pa.

“Meghan is a shining example of what our students can accomplish,” says Mark Strunsky, chair of the College’s Arts and Communication Department

“I tried to take as much as I could from every class and every teacher,” Maney explains. “The teachers have real experience in the art world, not just as professors but as artists, and I tried to absorb every bit of knowledge I could from their stories, instruction and example.”
