All information is true to the best of our knowledge and Sunflower Supreme certification occurred once all requirements were met. More information about requirements can be found at www.sunflowersupreme.org.
All heifers that are consigned to this sale have met strict guidelines in regards to health and reproductive care. All heifers come with documents supporting their management and have been 3rd party verified by K-State Research and Extension personnel. An overview of minimal requirements that all heifers have met are described below:
HEALTH- BVD-PI negative test- Bangs vaccination- Weaning and booster vaccination against IBR, BVD (Type I and II), PI-3, BRSV, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis- Pre-breeding vaccination against BVD, IBR, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis- Pregnancy exam vaccination against LeptospirosisAll heifers were treated for internal and external parasites 30 to 45 days prior to sale
PRE-BREEDING EXAMHeifers were checked by veterinarians to determine normal pelvic shape and reproductive tract and that heifers had a minimum of 130 cm sq pelvic area.Heifers were confirmed pregnant 30-45 days prior to sale.
SIRE USAGE AND BREEDINGAll sires used to breed Sunflower Supreme heifers are registered with a known breed association and were approved prior to use based on criteria described online and with educational packets. To summarize, for each breed classification minimal cutoff values for the Calving Ease EPD were determined based on percentile ranks within each respective breed association. If that breed does not have a Calving Ease EPD then Birth Weight EPD was used and a maximum value was determined, once again by percentile ranks.
Active Sire Percentile Rank RequirementsAmerican: Upper 20%
British: Upper 30%Continental: Upper 15%
Hybrid: Upper 20%
All heifers bred by AI have a minimum accuracy of 0.60 for Calving Ease or Birth Weight EPD. All sires, AI or natural service, must have met EPD requirements prior to use on heifers. Maximal breeding season is 60 days, with the requirement that the AI confirmed heifers must have a 14-day gap between AI date and beginning natural service date.
LIABILITYAll persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk, legal or otherwise, for their own safety or for the behavior of the animals. The owners, sale barn owners and staff, sale managers or partners, etc. assume no liability for property loss or any accident that may occur.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATIONA supplement sheet will be available sale day with any changes or updated information. Announcements from the auction block regarding the cattle selling in this sale take precedence over information listed in this catalog.

WELCOME
2
Greetings,
Thank you for your interest in the inaugural Sunflower Supreme Bred Heifer sale. The Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension are proud to partner together in this important endeavor. We appreciate the opportunity to work with Kansas cattlemen to improve the genetics of their herds.
The idea for this elite female sale began several years ago on the Kansas Farm Bureau’s Governor’s Tour through southeast Kansas. It was noted that there was a real need for more economic activity in the area. Through discussions, this partnership of KDA and KSRE was encouraged by Gov. Brownback. This sale today is one example of how, by working together, we can improve and expand on existing agricultural businesses of the region.
The beef industry in Kansas is critical to our state’s overall economy, contributing more than $10.2 billion dollars each year and supporting over 35,000 jobs.
Together we stand ready to provide support for continued growth of this industry.
Kansas beef cattle producers are recognized around the globe for their outstanding livestock genetics and the top-quality beef produced here in the Sunflower State. We wish you well in your endeavors and looking forward to serving the needs of Kansans for years to come.
Sincerely,
Jackie McClaskey Daryl Buchholz Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Associate Director, K-State Research and Extension

Home raised cattle that have been selected for longevity and maternal qualities since 1999. SouthWind Ranch has been aggressively selecting for quality females and this tradition is being carried on by use of the sire OCC Yangon 825Y to breed the heifers in this lot. 825Y is a grandson of Dixie Erica 1019 cow whose genetics are prominent in our herd. 825Y has an estimated $EN EPD that is the top 2% of the Angus breed. $EN is an index value that estimated dollars/cow/year savings in future daughter from a maintenance standpoint. 3414 has Chill Factor in her pedigree and 3414 has Ice Breaker in her pedigree. 3411’s Simmental influence comes from Meyer 734.

Our goal for the past 40 years is to produce females that are low maintenance and trouble free. If they have bad structure, udders, or attitude, they go to town. We are confident that these heifers will work well in a purebred or commercial operation. They are bred to an Angus bull and we will pay the expense of transferring papers.

Registered Angus heifers bred to registered Angus bulls! These registered Angus heifers are estimated to calve within a 20 day interval in March to registered Angus bulls. Certificates will be provided if the buyer chooses to register the calves. Pedigree and estimated EPDs for the heifers can be found using the American Angus Association animal search with the provided registration numbers in the table to the left. Heifers 3062, 3076, 3077 and 3084 are examined safe to AI bull, while 3078 is bred to the natural service sire. All heifers were tested free of neospora. Genetic testing indicates that 3077 is a DD carrier, while the other heifers in this lot are DD FREE. The calf of the 3077 would need to be tested and found DD free in order to register the calf.

F1-HEREFORD X SALERS1201Black baldies out the Hereford Bull, Victor 719T, due to calve the end of January. Victor 719T is the number two bull in the Hereford breed and his black baldy daughters prove that heterosis = profit. These heifers are powerful and will make great cows in any operation. These heifers all have lots of pigment around the eyes. Additionally, from the Igentity estimated values (genetic testing), the heifers in this lot should be easier keeping as they have the most favorable residual feed intake values of Hope’s heifers offered in the sale.
