PREPARATIONSand and seal the surface.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBACKGROUNDBase with one coat Slate Grey. Make a mix of Purple Rain + Slate Grey + Purple Cow + Neutral Grey (ap-prox. 1:1:1:1/2) and apply second basecoat. While this is still wet (you might want to add a few drops of extender to keep this open longer), and using the 3/4" wash brush, slip-slap Avocado, Light Avocado, Purple Cow, Neutral Grey, and Black Plum blending in a bit with the background. This is your piece, so play with it until you are happy! I chose to add more Black Plum and Neutral Grey to the outside edges and corners. Load the 3/4" wash brush in thinned Light Avocado and add a few shadow leaves to the back-ground next to and under some of the fl owers. Pick up thinned Spicy Mustard in your dirty brush, blend, and add a subtle highlight to the top edge. Shade at bottom edge of above center vein area with thinned Avocado.

STEMSBase with a brush-mix of Light Avocado + Spicy Mus-tard (approx. 1:1). Highlight with a dirty brush loaded in base mix, then Chartreuse Yellow; add Primary Yellow to dirty brush and add highlights to brighter areas; add Bleached Sand to dirty brush and add brightest highlights. Shade opposite side of stem with Avocado.

LEAVESBase with Light Avocado. Add highlights (I used a shader and fl oated color along the edges and a highlighter to dry-brush highlights on center areas of leaves. This goes next to center veins—check close-up pics—and also to bring up some fl oated highlights into leaves) with a brush-mix of Light Avocado + Spicy Mustard (approx. 1:1); add Chartreuse Yellow to dirty brush and add brighter highlights; add Primary Yellow to dirty brush and add brightest highlights. Veins are a brush-mix of Light Avocado + Spicy Mus-tard (approx. 1:1). Shade on opposite side of center vein from highlight, under each side vein, at base, inside fl ips, and any shadow areas with Avocado walking color over; repeat, using Plantation Pine, not walking out as far. Add Black Plum to darkest areas.

NOTE: I am giving you directions for the sunfl owers from left to right. You may want to paint the fl owers that are underneath fi rst to make it easier for yourself.

Sunfl ower 1NOTE: I did not put the petals that lay over the center until after the center was in. Base petals Antique Gold. Highlight, using a shader or highlighter as needed, with Spicy Mustard; add Primary Yellow to dirty brush and add more Light Avocado + Spicy Mustard (approx. 1:1) highlights; add Bleached Sand to dirty brush for bright-est highlights; add more Bleached Sand to dirty brush for brightest highlights—lower right petals. Shade, using a shader or highlighter—I used the highlighter to

dry-brush dark areas on centers of petals—as needed, with a brush-mix of Antique Gold + Honey Brown (ap-prox. 1:1; add more shading with Honey Brown; add more shading in darkest areas with Light Cinnamon. Center: Using dry #6 blending brush, stipple in with Traditional Burnt Umber, keeping “toe” of brush to outside edges. Add Light Cinnamon to dirty brush and add more color, keeping center area just Traditional Burnt Umber; pick up Honey Brown on dirty brush and add lighter area; repeat, adding Orange Twist to dirty brush and adding this only to the top right of the highlight area. “Seeds” are small one-strokes with the #2 round and Honey Brown + Orange Twist (approx. 1:1). Shade at base with Honey Brown. Add thin lines of Traditional Burnt Umber at top of each seed and here-and-there in between.

Sunfl ower 2Base petals Marigold. I added the darker colors to the centers of each petal with a dry highlighter. Floated shading to separate petals, at base, etc. is done with a shader. Scrub a brush-mix of Honey Brown + Burnt Orange (approx. 1:1) to centers of petals and fl oat as shading; repeat, adding Burnt Orange to dirty brush. Also pull lines of each color into petals, following the shape of each petal. Do not clean brush at this point; just lay it aside until after you add highlights. Add high-lights to brightest areas of petals with fl oated Primary Yellow; repeat, adding Bleached Sand to dirty brush; repeat, adding more Bleached Sand. Lightly wash over all petals with thinned Burnt Orange. When dry, add more darks with highlighter and shader with Traditional Burnt Sienna. If you lost your highlights, add a bit more Primary Yellow and Bleached Sand to make them pop. These petals are at the bottom of the fl ower. Center: Using dry #6 blending brush, stipple in with Traditional Burnt Umber, keeping “toe” of brush to outside edges. Pick up Light Avocado in dirty brush, smash to blend, and add to center area. Add Honey Brown to dirty brush and stipple in circle that surrounds the center; repeat, adding Orange Twist to dirty brush and adding to lower right of this area. Add dots of Honey Brown and Orange Twist with the tip of your liner—you don't want perfect dots, so don't use a stylus—keeping the brighter dots in the highlight area. Add thin lines of Tra-ditional Burnt Umber at top and right sides of center; add a dot with your liner to the tops of these lines.

Sunfl ower 3Base petals Orange Twist. Scrub and fl oat color on petals, as on Sunfl ower 2, with a brush-mix of Orange Twist + Burnt Orange (approx. 1:1); repeat, adding more Burnt Orange to dirty brush. Again, lay brush aside as above. Float Primary Yellow to brightest areas. Wash over petals with thinned Burnt Orange. When dry, add Traditional Burnt Sienna to dirty highlighter and add

more color to petals; repeat, adding more Traditional Burnt Sienna to dirty brush; repeat, adding Traditional Burnt Umber to dirty brush. Be sure each of the areas you scrub in gets smaller and smaller, allowing the colors underneath to show through. Add Traditional Burnt Umber shading, if necessary, to separate petals, etc. Center: Stipple in as above with Traditional Burnt Umber; add Light Avocado to dirty brush and stipple area around center, leaving the edges and center dark. Add dots with Honey Brown and Orange Twist with tip of your liner.

Sunfl ower 4Undercoat petals with a brush-mix of Saff ron + Bleached Sand (approx. 1:1); base Saff ron. Scrub, fl oat, and pull thin lines in petals with a brush-mix of Or-ange Twist + Burnt Orange (approx. 1:1); repeat, add-ing Burnt Orange to dirty brush; repeat, adding Light Cinnamon to dirty brush. Add highlights to brightest areas with Primary Yellow; add Bleached Sand to dirty brush for brighter highlights; add more Bleached Sand to dirty brush for very brightest highlights—these are mainly the lower left petals. Wash over all but the very brightest petals with thinned Burnt Orange. Add a bit

more color to the petals with Traditional Burnt Sienna. Center: Stipple in as above with Traditional Burnt Um-ber; pick up Light Avocado on dirty brush and add to center circle and outer circle; pick up Honey Brown in dirty brush and add highlights to outside circle, mainly toward left bottom on large circle; stipple in a circle between the center circle and outside circle with this color; pick up Orange Twist in dirty brush and add more highlights. Add dots of Honey Brown and Orange Twist, keeping brightest dots in highlight areas.

Sunfl ower 5Base petals Spicy Mustard. Highlight with Primary Yel-low. Float shading and pull thin lines into petals with Orange Twist; add Burnt Orange to dirty brush and repeat; repeat, adding more Burnt Orange. Center: Stipple in as above with Traditional Burnt Umber; add Light Cinnamon to dirty brush and add some color; add Honey Brown to dirty brush and stipple in high-light; add Orange Twist to dirty brush and add more highlight. Add dots of Honey Brown and Orange Twist.

DETAILSAdd light fl oats of the following colors to petals, here-and-there, to make the painting more interesting: Light Avocado, Avocado, Purple Cow, Purple Rain, Black Plum. Add touches of Orange Twist, Burnt Orange, Traditional Burnt Sienna to leaves.

FINISHINGPut chalk pencil in compass, set to 3/4" and, running metal point along outside edge of piece, chalk in a line. Paint with Plantation Pine. Using dry highlighter scrub Copper Kettle Metallic Lustre around outside edges, pulling it in on the corners. I did not do this on the bot-tom edge. I also scrubbed a little of this here-and-there on some of the fl ower petals. Outside edge is painted Plantation Pine.
