SUNDSVALL
Welcome to Sundsvall, the capital of Norrland. Nowhere north
of the Dalälven river has more life and energy than Sundsvall.
Welcome to the town between the mountains, in the heart of
the stunning Norrland countryside and at the centre of all the
action. A wide range of entertainment, culture and experiences
await you, with many of them mentioned in this brochure. And
there is an even better way to decide whether we live up to our
proud boasts: come here and see for yourself.
Start in our proud stone-built town
Start with a visit to one of the country’s most beautiful town
centres, with boulevards and magnificently ornate stone
buildings in Neo-Renaissance style. Our beautiful stone buildings
were erected during the reconstruction of the city after the
catastrophic fire of 1888, which left 9,000 people without
homes. Look up and admire the handsome façades, but don’t
get a stiff neck – there’s so much more to see.
In the mood for shopping
Sundsvall has always been a centre of trade, and today the range
of shopping on offer is growing rapidly, both in the central Stone
Sundsvall – the town

and exciting programme. Våningen also provides musical
entertainment and shows.
Explore the great outdoors
Enjoying the countryside is an integral part of being in the town.

or fish.Or go for the adrenaline rush with some challenging rock
climbing. Cycling, canoeing, horse riding and hiking trails, cross-
country skiing trails and downhill pistes cater for all levels. Every
corner of our municipality has an exciting story to tell and so
much to discover and experience.
Our story is worth telling
Sundsvall’s exciting industrial history becomes a tangible
experience through our well-preserved ironworks, mills,
museums and rural heritage centres. Unique prehistoric remains
indicate that Sundsvall has been populated for about two
thousand years. Sundsvall currently boasts nearly 100,000
residents and an impressive selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs,
and bars. Cultural opportunities abound and the musical events
are in a class by themselves.
Hospitality and choice
Are you coming to attend one of our events? Is it our annual
Street Festival (Gatufesten) in the first week of July that brings
you here, or is it the sports arenas that you crave? Sundsvall has
top-notch teams in football, basketball, ice hockey and bandy, as
well as world-class swimmers.
Whoever you are, we would like to welcome you to the

Sundsvall | ShoppingOne of Sundsvall’s strongest suits is its shopping – the selection
and variety is on a par with that of a major city and draws
visitors from all around Norrland. The Stone Town boasts over
200 shops, and just outside Sundsvall is Birsta Retail Park, where
the number of shops and chains continues to grow. See page 9
for more about Birsta.
Exciting shopping throughout the townAlthough Storgatan has everything you could want for a day
or two of shopping, we should point out that the side streets
are also not to be missed. They offer a host of small shops
that are well worth exploring. Naturkompaniet on Kyrkogatan
is a prime example. Lingerina Design, with its exclusive under-
wear on Tullgatan, is another. MoyoStreetwear at Storgatan 3
knows what’s hot and what’s not for the fashion-conscious
skater right now.
From local crafts to international furniture designIn Stone Town you’ll also find a number of niche shops, such as
Almamia, a cultural crafts shop that also acts as a venue for art
and music, and Magasin 8, which specialises in fine crafts and
attractive textiles. Village and Lev & Lek have a cool range of
home furnishings.Rummet on Nybrogatan sells the furniture you
read about in the latest magazines. Home furnishings store
Kaaza at Storgatan 31 specialises in dark woods and Oriental
style. The fully redesigned Åhléns department store on Storgatan
is a good tip for modern Swedish homeware. Living in Sweden
offers more personal furniture and interior details.
Three blocks become the In place to shopOn Storgatan, the In shopping centre offers three blocks of
shopping under one roof, stretching from Stora Torget to Olof
Palmes Torg. The In centre houses many popular stores and
brands in fashion, home furnishings, beauty and sport. Each block
has its own character and the three are linked by bridges. Need
a break? Make a pit stop at one of our cafés, which are natural
gathering places for many Sundsvall residents. Why not round
off your day with a delectable dinner and a glass of wine at
Innergården 1891, which also offers outdoor dining on Stora
Torget during the summer.
Stora Torget Market around Gustav II AdolfAt Stora Torget in the heart of the Stone Town is a bustling
market, where, depending on the season, you’ll find flowers,
fruit, vegetables, clothes, fresh fish, watches and jewellery,
among other things. In the summer, park benches around
Gustav II Adolf ’s statue quickly fill up with ice cream-eating
sun-seekers. Feel free to take a seat!
Freshly-ground coffee, luxury chocolate and Italian delicaciesKonfektasken sells a wide range of coffee, but is also an
unmissable treat for chocaholics everywhere. Ido Kaffehandel
is another great place to buy coffee. Delicerano on Sjögatan
has genuine biscotti to go with your coffee and an Italian deli
for gourmets. An espresso while you wait for your Parma
ham is a must.

casual barfly, Sundsvall has something for you. Sundsvall has
more restaurants per capita than any other town in Norrland,
with over 60 restaurants, bars and pubs, the majority of which
have tables outside in the summer.

Kyrkogatan, while 7 Kryddor at Stadshusparken offers delicacies
from the Eastern Mediterranean, prepared on a charcoal grill.

Rådhusgatan and at Café Afmed´or in the In shopping centre.

lover in town will tell you. Ming Palace is an institution when it
comes to Chinese food. Good Thai food is available in many
places, from restaurants to street stalls.Tapas? Head for Saffran.
Sundsvall’s classic Oscar Matsal & Bar has a bar and grill menu.
Café Le Fil de Rasoir in the famous Hotel Knaust is a tasteful
French brasserie. And on Norra Berget lies Grankotten, which
was mentioned in the Gourmet magazine as a safe bet.
Fun on stage and on the dance floorIf you’re ready to dance, we’ve got several nightclubs and
restaurants with dance floors. Aveny at Nöjesskrapan and
Casino Cosmopol offer exciting dancing programes all year
round. Oscar is the nightclub for themed evenings, including
“Open Mind” and “30+.” At Aveny, you can dance to a dance
band, strut your stuff at the disco and rock out in the
Rockbaren all in the same evening. Interested in seeing a show
with popular artists? Hotel Södra Berget and Casino Cosmopol

Stadshuset holds concerts by major artists as well, while
Våningen is a popular live music venue, often showcasing local
talent. You’ll find upcoming event listings in local newspapers
or at the Tourist Office. Tickets can be purchased at Entré

M/S Medvind restaurant and pleasure boat in the harbourThe restaurant boat, the M/S Medvind, moors up in the harbour
in the summer, ready to take you on a tour of Sundsvall’s
archipelago. The boat has a large sundeck, a cosy dining room on
the upper deck and a nightclub on the lower deck, as well as
three bars and capacity for 295 passengers. Delicious local
seafood buffets at sea.
Pubs with locally brewed beer and fine whiskiesThe number of pubs in Sundsvall is more than enough for a
busy night or two on the town. Follow your taste, but don’t
stay in one place all night – get out and try others as well. The
Bishop’s Arms has an extensive beer selection for those with
refined tastes, and the Irish Pub has a very original beer from
its own brewery. Storgatans Bar & Kök has the greenest
interior and great music. Svensson has a spectacular pub
menu, and in addition to beer, Scottish pub Mercat Cross has
an impressive assortment of whiskies.

At the end of the 19th century, Sundsvall transformed from a
simple wooden town to a modern metropolis with a European
style of architecture. Sundsvall is spectacularly situated between
two mountains. These mountains offer beautiful nature, culture
and a host of activities.
From a wooden settlement to a world-renowned town of stoneAfter the fire of 1888 – the third major fire in its history –
Sundsvall was rebuilt in stone in a Neo-Renaissance style, with
richly adorned façades and a broad boulevard that also acted
as a firebreak.Today, many of the stone buildings are listed.
Guided toursThe best way to experience the beautiful Stone Town is on a
guided tour. You can take a tour around the town at your own
pace with the help of earphones and an mp3 player (available
in English). Sundsvall Museum will also organise special themed
tours for those with a specific interest in façades, churches or
stairways, for example.
A rooftop tour gives you a new perspectiveYou can also discover Sundsvall from above and see the city’s
pinnacles and towers at close quarters. During the summer, you
can take a guided tour of one of the rooftops in the Stone Town.
Marvel at Sundsvall’s magnificent architecture from dizzying
heights and learn about its history – its establishment, the major
fire, the construction of the Stone Town, and Sundsvall as it
stands today. Book at the Tourist Office or at www.upplevmer.se
Norra Berget: our very own zoo parkNorra Berget is Sundsvall’s town park with animal pens, an
lookout tower, walks and a playground boasting a slide in the
shape of the fabled Skvader – half hare, half capercaillie.
The artisan shops offer local delicacies and goods made using
traditional crafts, some with a modern new twist. The park is
also home to a museum of handicrafts and naval history,
where you can see what is purported to be an actual Skvader.
Don’t miss Bureplatsen, a magnificent “room” in nature, a stage
created by landscape architects and sculptors.
Södra Berget: indoor and outdoor entertainment and activitiesAcross from Norra Berget, you’ll find an open-air recreation
area at a high altitude, with forest games and a climbing park for
young children, plus nature trails and assault courses for the
older ones. There is also Spa Maskrosen – a relaxing place to
recharge your batteries. Hotel Södra Berget also hosts shows
for the better part of the year. In the winter, the mountain offers
miles of cross-country skiing trails, not to mention Södra
Berget’s slalom slope, which boasts world cup status.
Walk, ride, paddle, cycle or drive around SundsvallThere are many places to explore and plenty of ways to see
them. Sundsvall’s Tourist Office has all the information you need
about the various driving, cycling, canoeing, snow scootering,
horse riding and walking trails that criss-cross the municipality,
including the popular Pilgrimsleden, Mittnordenleden,
Gusturleden and Alnötrampet trails.
