Woe to thecomplacent in Zion, to those who feel secure lying upon beds of ivory! (Amos 6:1,4).They eat, they drink, they sing, they play and they care nothing about other peoples troubles.These are harsh words which the prophet Amos speaks, yet they warn us about a danger that all ofus face. What is it that this messenger of God denounces; what does he want his contemporaries,and ourselves, to realize? The danger of complacency, comfort, worldliness in our lifestyles and in ourhearts, of making our well-being the most important thing in our lives. This was the case of the richman in the Gospel, who dressed in fine garments and daily indulged in sumptuous banquets; this waswhat was important for him. And the poor man at his doorstep who had nothing to relieve hishunger? That was none of his business, it didnt concern him. Whenever material things, money,worldliness, become the centre of our lives, they take hold of us, they possess us; we lose our very

identity as human beings. The rich man in the Gospel has no name, he is simply a rich man.Material things, his possessions, are his face; he has nothing else. Lets try to think: How doessomething like this happen? How do some people, perhaps ourselves included, end up becomingself-absorbed and finding security in material things which ultimately rob us of our face, our humanface? This is what happens when we no longer remember God. If we dont think about God,everything ends up being about me and my own comfort. Life, the world, other people, all of thesebecome unreal, they no longer matter, everything boils down to one thing: having. When we nolonger remember God, we too become unreal, we too become empty; like the rich man in theGospel, we no longer have a face! Those who run after nothing become nothingas another greatprophet Jeremiah, observed (cf. Jeremiah 2:5). We are made in Gods image and likeness, not thatof material objects, not that of idols!

2. So, as I look out at you, I think: Who are catechists? They are people who keep the memory of Godalive; they keep it alive in themselves and they are able to revive it in others. This is somethingbeautiful: to remember God, like the Virgin Mary, who sees Gods wondrous works in her life butdoesnt think about honour, prestige or wealth; she doesnt become self-absorbed. Instead, afterreceiving the message of the angel and conceiving the Son of God, what does she do? She sets out,she goes to assist her elderly kinswoman Elizabeth, who was also pregnant. And the first thing shedoes upon meeting Elizabeth is to recall Gods work, Gods fidelity, in her own life, in the history of herpeople, in our history: My soul magnifies the Lord For he has looked on the lowliness of his servant His mercy is from generation to generation (Luke 1:46, 48, 50). This canticle of Mary also contains

the remembrance of her personal history, Gods history with her, her own experience of faith. And thisis true too for each one of us and for every Christian: faith contains our own memory of Gods historywith us, the memory of our encountering God who always takes the first step, who creates, saves andtransforms us. Faith is remembrance of his word which warms our heart, and of his saving work which

gives life, purifies us, cares for and nourishes us. A catechist is a Christian who puts this remembranceat the service of proclamation, not to be important, not to talk about himself or herself, but to talkabout God, about his love and his fidelity - to speak and to transmit all that God has revealed, i.e.the teaching of Christ and His Church in its totality, neither adding nor subtracting anything.Saint Paul recommends one thing in particular to his disciple and co-worker Timothy: RememberJesus Christ, raised from the dead, whom I proclaim and for whom I suffer (cf. 2 Timothy 2:8-9). TheApostle can say this because he too remembered Christ, who called him when he was persecutingChristians, who touched him and transformed him by his grace.

The catechist, then, is a Christian who is mindful of God, who is guided by the memory of God in his orher entire life and who is able to awaken that memory in the hearts of others. This is not easy! Itengages our entire existence! What is the Catechism itself, if not the memory of God, the memory of

his works in history and his drawing near to us in Christ present in his word, in the sacraments, in hisChurch, in his love? Dear catechists, I ask you: Are we in fact the memory of God? Are we really likesentinels who awaken in others the memory of God which warms the heart?

3. Woe to the complacent in Zion!.What must we do in order not to be complacent peoplewho find their security in themselves and in material thingsbut men and woman of the memory ofGod? In the second reading, Saint Paul, once more writing to Timothy, gives some indications whichcan also be guideposts for us in our work as catechists: pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,endurance, gentleness (cf. 1 Timothy 6:11).

Catechists are men and women of the memory of God if they have a constant, living relationshipwith him and with their neighbour; if they are men and women of faith who truly trust in God and puttheir security in him; if they are men and women of charity, love, who see others as brothers and

sisters; if they are men and women of hypomon, endurance and perseverance, able to facedifficulties, trials and failures with serenity and hope in the Lord; if they are gentle, capable ofunderstanding and mercy. Let us ask the Lord that we may all be men and women who keep thememory of God alive in ourselves, and are able to awaken it in the hearts of others. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters, hello!

First of all I want to thank God for the day I spent at Assisi on Friday. Understand that this was the firsttime that I went to Assisi and it was a great gift to make this pilgrimage on the feast on St. Francis. Ithank the people of Assisi for their warm reception. Many thanks!

Today the Gospel reading begins this way: "At that time the apostles said to the Lord: Increase ourfaith! (Luke 17:5-6). I think that all of us can make this request our own. We, like the Apostles, also sayto Jesus: Increase our faith!

Yes, Lord, our faith is small, our faith is weak, fragile, but we offer it to you just as it is, so that you willmake it grow. It seems to me that it would be good for all of us to repeat this together: "Lord, increaseour faith!" Shall we do it?

Everyone: Lord, increase our faith! Lord, increase our faith! Lord, increase our faith! Make it grow!And the Lord, how does he answer? He replies: "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you couldsay to this mulberry tree: 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you" (Luke 17:6).

The mustard seed is very small, but Jesus says that it is enough to have a faith like this, small, but true,sincere to do things that are humanly impossible, unthinkable. And it is true! We all know people who

are simple, humble, but with an incredibly strong faith, who truly move mountains!

Think, for example, of certain mammas and papas who face very hard situations; or certain sickpeople, even gravely sick people, who convey serenity to those who visit them. These people,

precisely because of their faith, do not boast about what they do, rather, as Jesus asks in the Gospel,they say: "We are useless servants. We have done what we were supposed to do" (Luke 17:10).

How many people among us have this strong, humble faith and do so much good!

In this month of October, which is especially dedicated to the missions, we think of many missionaries,men and women, who have overcome all sorts of obstacles to spread the Gospel. They have trulygiven their life; as St. Paul says to Timothy: "Do not be ashamed to bear witness to our Lord, nor to me,in prison for him; but with the power of God, suffer with me for the Gospel" (2 Timothy 1:8).

But this is meant for everyone: each one of us, in his everyday life, can bear witness to Christ, with thepower of God, the power of faith, the small faith that we have, which, nevertheless, is strong! With this

strength bear witness to Jesus Christ, be Christians with your life, with our witness!

And where do we get this strength from? We get it from God in prayer. Prayer is the breath of faith: ina relationship of trust, in a relationship of love, dialogue cannot be lacking, and prayer is a dialogueof the soul with God. October is also the month of the Rosary, and on this first Sunday it a tradition torecite the

Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii - the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Holy Rosary. Let us join spirituallyin this act of confidence in our Mother, and we receive from her hands the beads of the Rosary: theRosary is a school of prayer; the Rosary is a school of faith!
