I heard something about giving something up during this time of year, thought that was sorta cool. The ashes thing, now that was just weird. My Methodist and Catholic friends always talked about it, but I think that was because you could get out of school early that day if you needed to. All to say, I was happy to discover my high school girl friend was Methodist and in time I joined in…physically anyway! The first time I recall having the ashes put on my head, and heard the preacher say the haunting words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return; ” that sorta freaked me out. But now as an ordained minister having dawned many a cross on the forehead of my people, I don’t think the ashes are so weird any more. Now I understand it as a reminder, that I am no more than the dust from which I came; the result of my innate sinfulness against God. But I am also reminded that there is an eternal, heavenly life, beyond our dusty parts. In faith, I am reminded how the Lord Jesus Christ atoned for my sins through his life, death, and resurrection. But you know what I think is weird? Why is it that we put so much emphasis on the confession of sins seemingly on Ash Wednesday, and not all the days of our life. Think about it. Most of the time we try to convince one another, and even ourselves, that we are “pretty good.” Most of the time we try to hide our flaws, like the bottles hidden in the closet, the rags in the attic, the stuff in the basement or garage that we haven’t gotten rid of yet. And then, on Ash Wednesday we actually open the closet, basement, or garage door and let all of the secrets tumble out. And we cry out, Oh God, have mercy! Part of what we do on Ash Wednesday is a reminder that most days we are not truthful about out our human condition, about our need to confess and repent. So part of what we recall as the ashes are placed on our foreheads is our inherit need to fall on the mercy of God every day of our lives, knowing the buildup of our secrets are stealing our joy. So it is we begin next our journey toward Easter next Wednesday, Feb. 26 th at 6:15pm. We begin by telling the truth! “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” “You are sealed by the Holy Spirit, marked by the cross of Christ.” In His Service, Pastor Mac

Ash Wednesday – Telling the Truth
I didn’t grow up with “ashes” on Ash Wednesday or even the practice of the Lenten season in my church.
The first time I recall having the ashes put on my head, and heard the preacher say the haunting words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return;” that sorta freaked me out.

So part of what we recall as the ashes are placed on our foreheads is our inherit need to fall on the mercy of God every day of our lives, knowing the buildup of our secrets are stealing our joy.
So it is we begin next our journey toward Easter next Wednesday, Feb. 26th at 6:15pm. We begin by telling the truth!
