Died: Nov. 4, 1857 SOURCES: To trace Barack Obama’s her- itage, the Sun-Times started with his book, Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, and the genealogi- cal research of William Addams Reitwiesner on Reitwiesner’s Web site, www.wargs.com. In addition, we verified information and dug up new facts with documents on Ancestry.com, in state archives, from public libraries and from other sources. Those who helped include Sam Dunnam of Dunham-Singletary Family Connections, Donna Dodson of the Newton County (Ark.) Historical Society, Virginia genealogist Brigitte Burkett, genealogist Christopher Challender Child of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, David Lee Dunham, Leon McCurry, Robert Mardock, Rae Janette McCurry Marshall, Virginia Goeldner and Maya Soetoro-Ng. Gabriel Duvall Sr.’s second cousin Gabriel Duvall Sarah Obama Jacob Mackey Dunham and wife Louisa Eliza Stroup Dunham Elizabeth Edna Creekmore McCurry, wife of Harbin Wilburn McCurry Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham Sr. Gabriel Duvall shared the name of his second cousin — Barack Obama’s direct ancestor — and spent more than six decades in public life, including serving in Congress. He was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, but it was President James Madison who tapped him to served on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1811. He was also a major slave owner, owning as many as 37 slaves at one point. Obama’s great-great-great- grandfather, Jacob Mackey Dunham was a farmer in Tipton County, Ind., in the 1870s. He later owned restaurants and a confec- tionary in the Oklahoma Territory, where he died in 1907, according to research by David Lee Dunham. Pro-slavery “bushwackers” burned their home, killed their son and nearly blind- ed their infant daughter with fiery coals. He was named for one of America’s greatest poets, but Barack Obama’s great-grandfather Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham never cared for his name. “It embarrassed him,” said daughter Virginia Goeldner. Dunham was an outdoorsman but he had a tender side. “He told me once: ‘If a dad has to tell their kids whether he loves them or not, he’s not doing his job right,’” Goeldner said.“He said, ‘If you love your kids, they feel it.’ ” Sarah Obama was just 16 when she married Obama’s grandfather. She’s really his step- grandmother, but Barack Obama calls her “Granny.” THE OBAMA FAMILY TREE For more information about the Obama ancestors on the Family Tree whose names are the numbered black-lined boxes, please turn to pages 4B and 5B. Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham Sr.

Gabriel Duvall shared the name ofhis second cousin — BarackObama’s direct ancestor — andspent more than six decades inpublic life, including serving inCongress. He was a close friend ofThomas Jefferson, but it wasPresident James Madison whotapped him to served on the U.S.Supreme Court in 1811. He wasalso a major slave owner, owningas many as 37 slaves at one point.

Obama’s great-great-great-grandfather, Jacob MackeyDunham was a farmer inTipton County, Ind., in the1870s. He later ownedrestaurants and a confec-tionary in the OklahomaTerritory, where he died in1907, according to researchby David Lee Dunham.

Pro-slavery “bushwackers”burned their home, killedtheir son and nearly blind-ed their infant daughterwith fiery coals.

He was named for one of America’sgreatest poets, but Barack Obama’sgreat-grandfather Ralph WaldoEmerson Dunham never cared forhis name. “It embarrassed him,”said daughter Virginia Goeldner. Dunham was an outdoorsman but hehad a tender side. “He told meonce: ‘If a dad has to tell their kidswhether he loves them or not, he’snot doing his job right,’” Goeldnersaid.“He said, ‘If you love your kids, they feel it.’ ”

Sarah Obama wasjust 16 when shemarried Obama’sgrandfather. She’sreally his step-grandmother, butBarack Obamacalls her“Granny.”
