Pentecost October 2017 It should come as no surprise that I think about the church, specifically, the Church of the Good Shepherd, quite a bit. My thoughts are filled (some might say cluttered) with teaching, preaching, pastoral matters, building concerns, and financial issues. All those thoughts, however, are really just periphery, tangential matters. At the heart and center of all that is swirling around my mind are you, the people of Good Shepherd. Though this is a large institution, I try never to lose sight of the central and holy truth that, you, the people of Good Shepherd, make up this body of Christ. And so, when you are not here, I am not thinking about average attendance or lost revenue. No, I am thinking: I miss you. Of course, I realize that we all live very busy lives. I realize that Sunday might be the only day when families can relax, exhale and, possibly, spend some casual time together. Believe me, I get that. I miss you, however, because I miss what each of you brings to and enhances who we are as a community. If we are collectively, the body of Christ, when one of us is absent, we are incomplete—a body part is missing. So, when I mention you are missed, I don’t intend to bring guilt or shame upon anyone. Rather, we need each other in order to be who we are in and for the body of Christ. Whenever we gather together in any form or fashion as Good Shepherd—worship, formation, meetings, or social functions— something happens. Jesus says that whenever two or three gather together in his name, he is there. Matthew 18:20 In all these various gatherings, Jesus honors and blesses us with his presence. In the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles we are given a picture of life in the early church, where the faithful “… devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Acts 2:42 As a result of this regular pattern of gathering for worship, study and fellowship, Acts 2:43 tells us “awe came upon everyone” and the apostles did many signs and wonders. The early believers were changed by their habits and practices. We have many various and wonderful activities and programs at Good Shepherd, from Sunday to Wednesday evening (The Trinity for Kids, Shepherd’s Night Out Supper, Youth group, bible study, etc.), to offer all ages. Regular, faithful, committed participation in any of these activities and programs WILL impact, transform and, in time, change us. All of our choices and habits—where we live, work, socialize; what we say, do, consume; who we befriend or shun—have the capacity to change and transform us. The question then is who and what do we want to be or become? The more fully we engage in and embrace this community that is Good Shepherd, the more likely we will more fully become the children of God we were created to be. Trinity for Kids is off to a wonderful start on Wednesdays! Beginning at 4:30, nearly 25 kids from K through 5th grade are gathering in the Christian Formation wing to participate in art, choir, movement/yoga and Godly Play. The program will not meet on October 11, due to fall breaks. We are delighted that we are sharing this program with Thankful Memorial Episcopal Church in St. Elmo and that three of their students are participating. Watch for art and music in worship on Sundays provided by these students! If you or someone you know might be interested in joining us, please contact John Wigal ([email protected]) or Kathleen Crevasse ([email protected]).

RISE, SHINE AND FIND YOUR PLACE TO SHINE!

On Sunday, October 1, from 9 until 10:15 there will be an all-parish breakfast in Talbird Hall. It’s also Episcopal School Sunday and we are inviting members of the school community to join us for breakfast and worship. Good Shepherd School brings so much life, laughter and vitality to this place (not to mention new members!); we hope you will reach out to GSS families you know to invite them to join us.

This Little Light of Mine is the “fight” song of Good Shepherd School and the children know well that we are to let our lights shine! Hide them under a bushel? NO! Where will you shine your light? Will you join the Outreach Committee? One of the choirs? Is hospitality your gift? Would you like to be a lector? You’ll have the opportunity to sign up for these ministries and more on Sunday, October 1.

Speaking of shining (and signing), visit the following website to sign up http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050a49a5ae2aa20-rise or contact [email protected] to sign up to bring something for the feast.

Blessing of the Animals

Sunday, October 1, 4 p.m.

Front Lawn of the Church

Bring your critters (leashed/tethered or crated/caged, please) to the annual Blessing of the Animals. October

the fourth is the feast day of the venerable Saint Francis of Assisi who loved God’s creatures so very well.

Each year on a Sunday close to that day, we give thanks for the blessing of our pets in our lives and offer a

blessing for our animals. If you are unable to bring an animal, you are welcome to bring a picture of an animal

you love or a picture of an endangered species in the wild. This is also a time set aside to recognize our mutual

independence with all God’s creatures and all God’s creation.

We’ve had a very busy start to the school year! With the first month behind us, we have successfully made it through to the “other side” of the opening transition. There are lots of smiling faces in the hallways on the students, parents and teachers alike! We have a lot happening in October.

Renewing of Your MindsRenewing of Your MindsRenewing of Your MindsRenewing of Your Minds This is the theme for the 2017 celebration of Episcopal Schools Celebration. We will be holding up our ministry this Sunday, October 1st during the 10:30 service at the Church of the Good Shepherd. If you’ve ever attended this annual service before, you know this is the time to give thanks and to proclaim to our community and the Church the good news of Good Shepherd School. Please join us to share the joy!

♦ We are hosting our Back to School Picnic in Talbird Hall on Tuesday, October 17th from 5:30-7:00 pm. It’s a great event to have everyone come together to share a meal and get to meet all the other children their kids have been telling them about!

♦ Grandparents Day is scheduled for Monday October 23rd. The children’s grandparents and honorary grandparents join them for Chapel Monday morning, followed by activities, special snacks and a wonderful, happy morning at Good Shepherd School.

♦ October 24th and 25th will be our Usborne Book Fair in the Lupton Reading Room. Please come by to see the wonderful selection of books and other wonderful gifts. It’s a great time to find those unique Christmas gifts for the children in your lives.

We’re all looking forward to the cooler days and nights and the gradual changing colors of the leaves. It’s almost time to believe it actually has changed to Fall!!

Why do we baptize babies?

Why do we baptize babies? That was one of my central questions, as I became an Episcopalian. This is a common question among many of us who did not grow up seeing babies baptized. Raised as a Baptist, I had been taught certain ways of thinking about the sacrament of baptism and had never seen an infant baptized until I was in my mid 20s. The sight of an infant surrounded by parents, godparents, and with the children of our parish at our feet is now one of most holy things I have ever witnessed.

Why do we baptize people in the first place? Of course, the simple answer is because Jesus was baptized, but that really doesn’t do the question justice. Baptism is the full initiation ritual of the Christian community. Passage through the waters of baptism is a public symbol for both the person being baptized and those witnessing that there is now a connection between us that cannot be undone.

But still, this doesn’t get to why we baptize people. All of the above is true. Yet there is more. Part of the mystery of the incarnation, God choosing to become a human, is that the stuff of humanity becomes holy too. So simple, every day necessities, like bread and wine, or water, become the very vessels of God’s grace and presence in our midst. So we baptize people yes to initiate, to publically acknowledge our relationship to each other, and to use the holiness of water to see the Truth about our relationship with God.

So why then do we baptize babies? For me, it has to do with the third reason we baptize people at all. Of course, we could require the person to recite the creeds, and proclaim our faith. Yes we could require them to say a modern day shibboleth. But does that ritual represent the Truth about our relationship with God? For this follow of Christ, it does not. So why babies then? Because, when we ponder it, that little baby’s welcome into the loving arms of the community of God, unearned, undeserved, a gift given freely from God through us to this little baby, is one of the most acute images of the nature of God we can see.

We baptize babies because God welcomes all, regardless. Regardless of age or capability, regardless of social status or knowledge, the Lord of Hosts welcomes all at the Table. It took me some time to see that. I pray it doesn’t take you as long to see it. We can all gather around the font on November 5th, All Saints’ Sunday. I hope to see you there.

Mac

PS. We also baptize adults and anyone who is interested. Our next baptismal dates are Nov 5th and Jan 7th, 2018. Email [email protected] to get information and sign up.

Hands are needed [and wanted!] at East Side Elementary School in the Oak Grove neighborhood of Chattanooga. The school at South Lyerly and East Main is located on the site of the former East Side Junior High School. It was completely rebuilt in 2000 and serves close to 600 students of which approximately 80% are Hispanic.

For this coming year, Good Shepherd is exploring ways to partner with East Side in the Chattanooga 2.0 Initiative. Part of this program links a community of faith to a Hamilton County school with the goal to “ensure all Hamilton County students regardless of neighborhood, zip

code, or background have the opportunity to succeed.”

Initially we will participate in the Mobile Pantry, the distribution of food and supplies from Chattanooga Food Bank to the school’s families. Mobile Pantry occurs once a month at the school; however, it is hoped that as we become more familiar with the school, more opportunities for our involvement will become apparent. *

The school is delightful. Its interior walls are covered with clever murals, the halls are immaculate, the classrooms welcoming, the children well-behaved and smiling. We are indeed fortunate and humbled to have the opportunity to share ourselves with a school that is doing wonderful things

Bena Devaney is coordinating Good Shepherd’s efforts. For more information, contact Bena [[email protected]] or Janice Robbins [[email protected]]. We are called to be God’s hands in the world and we can help.

Episcopal Relief and Development Please, please be aware of all those in United States, Mexico, and Caribbean who are affected by the recent weather and earthquake disasters. Donations may be made to Episcopal Relief and Development online [http://www.episcopalrelief.org]. Please pray for all who are in need and for responders.

A follow-up from our first panering oppounity… for East Side's Mobile Pantry, Wednesday, September 20th, we organized and distributed food provided by the Chattanooga Food Bank to the families of the students. The need for this service is great, but we were the ones leaving blessed. Many other opportunities for service exist, such as reading to the children one on one or in small groups, helping teachers perform classroom tasks, distributing afternoon snacks, and Spanish interpreters. Please join us in reaching out to our community. Bena
