Not all the music from any era survives the test of time. One

song from the 1970s, however, still speaks to us today: Bob

Dufford’s Like a Shepherd. Verse three is taken from the

conclusion of today’s Gospel passage.

Come unto me if you are heavily burdened,

and take my yoke upon your shoulders, I will give you rest.

Jesus tells his disciples that he himself is the yoke, meek and humble of heart. The rest

he promises comes from emulating his ways, his attitudes, his dispositions, and his

general way of being in the world. The yoke about which Jesus speaks is not burdening

or overbearing. When we are followers of Jesus, our lives will be filled with joy or, as

Pope Francis refers to it – the joy of the gospel.

Excerpts from Pope Francis’ Letter Laudato Si (On Care for Our Creation) CHAPTER THREE – The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis II. The Globalization of the Technocratic Paradigm, continued Pope Francis challenges us to broaden our vision. - We can put technology at the service of another type of progress, one which is healthier, more human, more social, more integral. - Cooperatives of small producers can adopt less polluting means of production, and opt for a non-consumerist model of life, recreation and community. - Technology can be directed primarily to resolving people’s concrete problems, truly helping them live with more dignity and less suffering. - We can recognize that humanity has profoundly changed, and the accumulation of constant novelties exalts a superficiality which pulls us in one direction. It becomes difficult to pause and recover depth in life.

“No one is suggesting a return to the Stone Age, but we do need to slow down and look at reality in a

different way, to appropriate the positive and sustainable progress which has been made but also to recover

the values and the great goals swept away by our unrestrained delusions of grandeur.”

Personal Health Evaluation

1. In the last two weeks, did you care for or have close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19? 2. Do you have any of the following: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat? If you or someone in your family can answer yes to either of these two questions, please refrain from signing up for Mass. Thank you for keeping everyone safe and healthy.

Faith Formation Registration

Please see pages four, five and six for Children’s Faith Formation registration forms. All classes begin October 4.

First Reaction to our 1st Weekend of Mass From a Parishioner: “I went to the 4 p.m. Mass today, Saturday, one of about 25. I congratulate you, I think you did a good job with the arrangements, which helped to make us feel safe. Being one of the vulnerable ones (83), I felt safe. At first, I was leery about going to communion the first time, but again after all the steps taken, I was confident and went. Of course, I also thank all of the people who did all the cleaning to assure our safety. Thank you.”

Group Meetings Suspended

The Pandemic is currently making it impossible for us to hold any meetings. The guidance from the CDC, the State of Maryland and the Archdiocese of Washington is making the safety of each one of us the primary emphasis. For the time being all organizations should plan to use the electronic world for meetings. Thank you for your cooperation.

Bulletin Article for Anti Racism Listening Session On June 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Catholics from four parishes – St. Patrick’s, Church of the Resurrection, St. Camillus, and St. John the Baptist – came together for a listening session on racial justice and equality. Here is a general description of what we heard:

Many felt incredible sadness, horror, and anger about the discrimination and injustice Black Americans are and have been enduring.

Outrage was expressed over police brutality. Many recognized the need for drastic change yet expressed impatience with the pace of change. There was a general feeling that the police must act differently, even as there was some concern about stereotyping

the police. The need to meet people where they are. There were many testimonies of how personal relationships as well as

deeply personal professional relationships can open our eyes, our ears, and our hearts. Practicing patience, respect, and understanding for everyone was seen as crucial. There was recognition that Racial injustice and inequality are not new; white people learning about it anew. Additionally, there was a painful acknowledgment of the history of black people on this continent, especially with

how they were kidnapped and brought here to be sold into slavery. Also, there was an awareness that everyone in this country lives in a sea of whiteness. That experience is very

different for black people, other people of color, and white people. Even more, there was a recognition of white privilege. Many wondered how long Black people will continue to be killed and oppressed, whether it will ever end. There was, further, a clear awareness that this time felt different. The group did express hope in the young, in the protesters, and maybe our churches could be communities of hope

for racial justice?

page eight July 5, 2020

Amidst all the protests for racial justice, police brutality and unjust racist social structures often remain. Change comes hard. Some of us wonder when it will come. Others are, perhaps, exhausted by the work needed simply to secure equal rights. And then there’s the coronavirus. We might legitimately and with understandable anger ask if things will ever really change. The mystics are poised to offer us wisdom in this tumultuous time. We need hope, which lies at the heart of the life of the amazingly positive mystic, Julian of Norwich.

Much of Julian’s life story remains shrouded in mystery. Julian lived in Norwich, England, in the late 1300s into the early 1400s. On May 8, 1373, when she was about thirty years old, Julian got drastically ill; her friends thought she was at death’s door. She regained health after receiving a remarkably vivid vision of the crucified Christ. In Showings, she relayed her vision and teachings.

Julian’s book recounts “a revelation of love that Jesus Christ, our endless bliss, made in sixteen showings” or profound experiences of God. The central theme of Showings is the unimaginable mystery of God’s love. Due to this love, Julian offers a vision of hope that is as thoroughly transformative as it is decidedly comforting. In a pivotal showing, Jesus tells Julian not to worry about sin and evil because “all shall be well. All shall be well; and all manner of thing shall be well.”

As Americans, we tend to be optimistic. We presume everything will turn out all right in the end, because it already has for us. We live in a tremendously prosperous nation. Most of us do not know real poverty, although some areas of the country tragically suffer from all-too-real poverty. Still, it seems Americans presume life will eventually work out positively.

Hope, though, is not optimism. Hope is realistic even as it stretches out to the unimaginable mystery of God. Hope keeps us focused on the beyond, which keeps this life in proper perspective. Without hope our life fractures. We get split lives. Julian says we have divided spiritual lives that create a lot of pain in the world. There is, in fact, a great deal of pain in life that argues against Julian’s stance of hope. I think of the vast oppression of Black Americans for the past four-hundred years,

people begging on the streets, and the millions starving. How does one hope when so many people are suffering? Julian recognizes the reality of evil. She wonders how “all things will be well” when sin is so obvious. God tells her to “[cling] to the divine goodness” and trust that “all things shall be well.”

Julian teaches that we all have an inner core called substance; this part of us is always one with God. We also have sensuality or our outer lives; this is not our sexuality but our lives in the world disconnected from God. Julian says we are both separated from God in/through our sensuality, and one with God in/through our substance. We sin when we live out of our separation from God—out of our sensuality only. Sin involves being

split apart from our substance. We sin both by our own choice and because of the

damage done to us by others. The context of our lives and thus of our choices is a damaged and sinful context, and we both reflect and augment this sinfulness with our own bad choices. The damage we suffer at the hands of others we perpetuate by our own hand. Sins are only symptoms of the deeper problem, the fracturing of our sensuality from our one-with-God substance. In sin we have been split apart from our substance.

Our split lives create anxiety and despair. We experience paralyzing unease over our addictions, shortcomings, and losses. These anxieties and the resulting despair can leave us feeling hopeless, inadequate, and alone. They prevent us from enjoying God, for we are—right here and right now—one with God. Julian assures us that God wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives. There is no anxiety too small. There is no situation too paltry. There is no concern beneath God’s attention. We can let God be involved in our small embarrassments. In these assurances Julian cultivates hope in us.

Julian sees sin as pain. God “holds sin as a sorrow and pain to his lovers, in whom he assigns no blame for his love.” God is extremely understanding. She hears God say to her, “In all this woe I have ever been with you; now see at last my loving: how we are one in bliss.” All through our pain, sorrow, and sin, God is with us. God is one with us.
