HYMNS OF THE DAY Second Antiphon Before the morning star, from
the womb, I have begotten you. The Lord has sworn and will not
repent. You are a Priest forever in the order of Melchisedec. Save
us, O Son of God, who was born of the Virgin, as we sing to You,
Alleluia. Third Antiphon – First Tone Lord, when You were baptized
in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the
voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and
the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His
words. Glory to You, Christ our God, Who appeared and enlightened
the world. Apotytikia – Fifth Tone O Faithful, let us sing a hymn
of praise and worship to the Logos Who is co-eternal with the
Father and the Spirit, Who was born of the Virgin for our
salvation. Of His own will, He went upon the Cross in the flesh and
suffered death, to raise the dead through His glorious
Resurrection. Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom) Blessed are
You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed
forth; By sending your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them
the universe You drew unto your net. O lover of mankind Glory to
You. Kontakion – Fourth Tone Today you appeared to the world, and
Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us as in fuller
understanding we sing to you: “You came, You were made manifest,
the unapproachable light.”

EPISTLE READING
Let Us Be Attentive..
Verse: Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord,
O you righteous.
Wisdom..
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians
4:7-13
Let us be Attentive..
BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the
measure
of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on
high he led a
host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He
ascended,"
what does it mean but that he had also descended into the
lower
parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended
far
above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his
gifts were
that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists,
some
pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of
ministry, for
building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity
of the
faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature
manhood,
to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17
At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He
withdrew
into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in
Capernaum
by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what
was
spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of
Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan,
Galilee
of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a
great
light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light
has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying,
"Repent,
for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

MINISTRY NEWS
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS VASILOPITA SUNDAY TODAY: Father Bakas will be
cutting the Vasilopita and Philoptohos is sponsoring the coffee
hour so please join us in the Fellowship Tent for coffee, cookies
and Vasilopita. Xronia Polla. MEETING: Our next General Assembly
meeting will be Sunday, January 22nd immediately after church. We
will meet in the residence apartment complex. January is also
MEMBERSHIP month, and letters are going out to remind you to renew
or join Philoptohos for the first time. Even if you cannot attend
the meetings, you can still be a member and stay on our mailing
list to join in Philoptohos work. We would like to increase our
membership and show the Metropolis what we can do! "FEED THE
NEIGHBORHOOD”: Philoptohos is going to start a new project for the
needy in our neighborhood. This project will start on the first
Sunday of February. We will be asking parishioners and Sunday
school students to bring a brown bag lunch to church on the first
Sunday of each month. The lunch need only include a plain, dry
sandwich of bologna or cheese and a small bottle of water or milk
if possible. We will be collecting the lunches in front of the
Cathedral and will deliver them right after communion, to those who
are hungry around the Pico and Normandie area. Our Cathedral stands
like a beacon of light in an area that needs help. As Father Bakas
says, we are the 'lighthouse on rocky shores'. Father has made
great strides around the Cathedral and now it is time for
Philoptohos to get out there face-to-face and help our neighbors.
We hope you will join us in feeding those who are hungry. AN
EVENING WITH FRIENDS: Don't forget our Evening with Friends dinner
honoring Father Peter Lambert on Saturday, January 28th at the Bel
Air Country Club. Father is a tireless worker for philanthropy and
has been instrumental in helping many people get off the streets
and find safe places to stay. He also leads the Philanthropia
effort and speaks at many AIDS groups. We are still accepting
signatures for the program book at this time and you may contact
Helene Ballas at 818-642-8011 to put in your signature. The
invitations have been sent out so please return your reservation as
soon as possible. If you did not receive an invitation and would
like one, please call Christina at the church office with your
contact information and she will notify us. Father Lambert's son
Perry will be entertaining us for the evening and he puts on a
fabulous, fun-filled show! "For we are God's handiwork, created in
Christ Jesus, to do good works, which God has prepared in advance
for us to do". Ephesians 2:10. With love in Christ's service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call
for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will
save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for
and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that
need prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our
priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests
during St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours. As you request prayer,
you may also wish to make an offering to St Sophia’s Altar Fund.
