*Jessie Sturtz & Gary Engler, our 2 candidates to be
received into full communion at the Easter Vigil, were not
able to attend the Rite of Election at the beginning of
Lent—because it was cancelled because of weather.
However, we still recall the purpose of that Rite & the
verification that candidates’ sponsors & pastors are asked
to give. (This also applies to our young candidates for
May 4’s Confirmation.) So I recall here words from the
Rite spoken by the bishop & the questions he asks.
“The Christian life & the demands that flow from the
sacraments cannot be taken lightly. Therefore, before
granting these candidates their request to share fully in
the Church’s sacraments, it is important that the Church
hear your testimony about their readiness & their
intention to live out the Catholic faith. I am pleased to
recognize their desire to participate fully in the
sacramental life of the Church. I ask you now to state your
opinion so that all may hear.
● Have they faithfully listened to the apostles’ instruction
proclaimed by the Church?
● Have they come to a deeper appreciation of their bap-
tism, in which they are joined to Christ & his Church?
,● Have they reflected sufficiently on the tradition of the
Church, which is their heritage, & joined their brothers &
sisters in prayer?
● Have they advanced in a life of love & service of others?
Answering those questions, I can wholeheartedly say yes
about our 2 candidates preparing for the April 20 Vigil.
Those questions asked of them can also be asked of us. Lent originated as the final engagement period of
catechumens before initiation. But Lent’s for us too & so
are those questions. So … what’s your answer??
Our preparation for Easter is “both baptismal &
penitential,” the Church teaches. Baptismal preparation
refers to the catechumens who will be baptized at the
Easter Vigil. Penitential preparation refers to the
faithful, to us, who want to make a fresh start. “Going to
Confession”—being reconciled—is a most fruitful way we
do this, rehearsing, you might say, for the renewal of
baptism that we’ll do on Easter.
So there are extra & various times for Confession this
week for your convenience:
Tuesday 11:30 am – 12:30 pm, 4:30 – 5:30 pm
Wednesday 11:30 am – 12:30 pm, 5:00 – 6:00 pm
There are 2 traditional offerings (“collections”) during
the Triduum: At Holy Thursday Mass the wooden bowl
in the sanctuary will be filled with the fruit of lenten sac-
rifice, inspired & guided for many by Catholic Relief Ser-
vices’ Operation Rice Bowl. We will be inviting a repre-
sentative of each family to bring up a Rice Bowl offering
as the altar is prepared. The significance of bringing the
gift from the table at home to the altar at church is not lost
on us. (The liturgy is clear: that night's offering is not to
keep but is only for the poor.) The offering of Good
Friday is a traditional one benefiting Christ's homeland,
the Holy Land. Our gift will support the work of the
Franciscan Missioners who serve the people there &
maintain the shrines that mark events in Jesus’ life.
Did you meet Ona last week? The Rice Bowl Project for
last week was entitled “Journey to Gaza” & illustrated
how Catholic Relief Services (CRS) works to match
workers with job opportunities. “CRS helped me start,”
Ona says. “They gave me the chance. Now I will be able to
continue this on my own.” This rich Lenten resource of
ours also include words of Pope Francis, “Work is a
necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path
to growth, human development & personal fulfillment.” (If
you haven’t been using the Rice Bowl calendar this Lent,
how about at least reviewing it all during Holy Week?)
Renew Faith. Extend Mercy. Inspire Hope. That’s the
name of our 2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal here in our
Catholic diocese. So far, 35 of us at SSPP & 8 of us at
StM are participating. Will you be part of this?
