WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS Janet Zemlicka

CONFESSSION AND FORGIVENESS

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. C: Amen. P: One with the communion of saints in all times and places, let us confess our sin against God and one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P: O God, our merciful redeemer, C: we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor’s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you,

and for ☩ his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. C: Amen. CALL TO WORSHIP

A: We gather to worship our God: C: not only with those whose hearts overflow with joy, but with those who long to offer their deepest sorrows.

WORD AMOS 5:18-24 L: A reading from Amos, the 5th chapter.

18 Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light. 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. 20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light— pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? 21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

L: Word of God, word of life. C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 70

L: We read Psalm 70 responsively. 1 Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me. C: 2 May those who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; L: may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. C: 3 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” turn back because of their shame. L: 4 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; C: may those who long for your saving help always say, “The Lord is great!” L: 5 But as for me, I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. C: You are my help and my deliverer; Lord, do not delay.

1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-18 L: The second reading is from 1 Thessalonians, the 4th chapter.

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

L: Word of God, word of life, C: Thanks be to God. L: Please stand for the Gospel

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION ELW pg. 216

MATTHEW 25:1-13 P: The Gospel according to Matthew, the 5th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

P: The Word of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

A: Please stand as we confess our faith through the Apostles’ Creed.

APOSTLES’ CREED P: Living together in trust and hope we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE P: Welcoming God’s reign of righteousness and mercy, let us pray with people of every time and place.

A brief silence.

Awaken your church to be ready to respond when Christ meets us in the cries of those in need. We lift up the church’s mission of care through Lutheran World Relief (other agencies could be added here) and other agencies. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: We pray for those in need: those who suffer; the sick; the poor; the

distressed; the lonely; those who grieve; and those who care for them. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. A: We pray for people who are frightened because they are ill. Help them

have confidence in those with medical knowledge to diagnose illness and care for them. Give them courage, hope and peace, and the knowledge that you

Page 11: Sunday after Pentecost - A Home for All People · and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus hrist ... SPEIAL MUSI “All reatures of Our God ... and all who support

11

are present in their weakness, pain and suffering. We pray especially for those on our prayer list and those we name in our hearts.

Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: We commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women who serve in the military, at home and abroad. Defend all who face danger and put their lives at risk so others might live in safety. Surround them with your love, protect them from all harm and help them to know that nothing can separate them from your love. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

A: Gracious God, we pray for medics and chaplains, and all who support our veterans: give them wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience to minister to the sick and wounded. We especially pray for all who returned from the field of combat with injuries, both physical and mental, which have harmed their young lives and for the charities and organizations which support them in their convalescence. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. A: Be with us Lord in the week ahead as we go out onto the world. May the lips

that have sung your praises always speak the truth, may the ears which have heard your word listen only to what is good and may our lives as well as our worship be always pleasing in your sight. Lord, in your mercy

C: hear our prayer. (Here other intercessions could be offered.)

P: Receive these prayers and the hopes and concerns of our hearts, O God, as we entrust into your loving care all for whom we pray, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

SHARING THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you all. C: And also with you. P: Let us share God’s peace with one another.

OFFERTORY PRAYER A: Creator God, you made everything, and you provide for every need. The bread we break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat and drink with thanksgiving, fill us with your love; C: let that love flow through us to others; and join us to the saints before us in a holy and boundless communion; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Hunger no more. Thirst no more. C: Come to the banquet of life.

COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION

SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

BLESSING P: Go out to stay awake! Go out to keep alert and be ready! C: We do not know the day or the hour, but we do know that God goes with us at all hours, on all days. P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy.

The Lord look upon you with favor ☩ and give you peace. C: Amen
