A MESSAGE FROM REVEREND ALISON HAMPTON With the cost of fuel always on our minds, most people are looking for ways to reduce consumption and so cut costs. For his birthday, Bob was given a de-vice by his well-meaning father to measure the amount of electricity we were using in the house. It is fascinating to watch the digits race as our gadgets do all the things which years ago people would have done by themselves. As the monitor surged last week, I remembered the day the main electricity cable in my last parish was cut by vandals. Although the church stood in dark-ness, we were celebrating the Day Of Pentecost when a surge of power was given to everybody through the Holy Spirit. The Day of Pentecost comes 50 days after Easter so this year will be on 31 May. The gift of the Holy Spirit was promised from the early days of Jesus’ ministry. The gospel writers wrote that believers would receive the power of the Spirit and it would be life-giving and life-changing, just as at the beginning of creation when God breathed life into the human, Adam, and turned him into a living being. The Holy Spirit is a gift to all people, a gift that makes us all a people of God. This gift is supposed to flow through us and help us to make a difference to the world we live in. It is often difficult to find ways of using that power, and as our days get filled up with the business of living, I expect most of us feel that our cable has been cut! As I chased around getting the electricity board to re-connect the power at church, I was reminded of the joke the Archdeacon told at my licensing. “How many people does it take to change a light bulb?” “You don’t need a light bulb, you’ve got the Holy Spirit”. I watch Bob's monitor whizzing around and think how good it is not to have the Holy Spirit in rations! Yours Alison

NEWS FROM OUR VILLAGE SCHOOLS ARNESBY and MOWSLEY ST. NICHOLAS C.of E. PRIMARY SCHOOL FEDERATION www.arnesby.leics.sch.uk 0116 2478563 Mowsley School 0116 2402464 Arnesby: Music Concert: Our children again performed brilliantly at the music concert at the end of April. The variety of styles and the number of instruments played is splendid. The teaching of Heather Knox and Richard Holder produces a high standard and this was demonstrated on the night. It is clear that the children enjoy playing their instruments and performing, regardless of their ability. We value highly the ability to appreciate the Arts at Arnesby and musical performance encourages this in an enthusiastic way. Around the World in 80 schools: Last week Charline Evans visited the school to include our school as one of the eighty schools she has visited around the world. This project has included schools as far apart as Equator and Thailand. Her work has been recognised by various universities, dem-onstrating the variety of educational methods around the world. The children are able to say how they feel about the present and what they expect in the future. This will be online in the near future—we will keep you informed. Mowsley: May Celebration: The highlight at this time of year, in Mowsley, is our May Day celebrations. We have a May Queen (Wendy Hynes) and a Jack o’ the Green (Sam Shelton) who lead the pro-ceedings. The Infant children perform Country Dancing, aged from 5-7 years. The Jun-ior children perform a Maypole dance and Morris dancing, aged 8-11 years. The effort, concentration and expertise shown by our children is splendid and they always produce a very high standard. Mrs Pauline Dawes is our tutor and our guide for these dances and we very much appreciate her commitment. The staff of the school contribute with practices and support; the PTA produce superb cream teas; a community event which is enjoyed by all. Headteacher: Diane Miller HUSBANDS BOSWORTH C. of E. PRIMARY SCHOOL 01858 880212

BOSWORTH BARDS Some of you may remember the song "Move over Beethoven", however at Husbands Bosworth School we believe it's “Move over Shakespeare”! The literary talent shines forth once again. This time it is the turn of our year 5 and 6 pupils to see their work published. The children took part in a national poetry writing competition and they are to have their work published. The budding poets are: Charles Timms, Ruby Blake, Paul Atkinson, Matthew Day, Tom Ross, Aaron Bar-nett, Kian Gill, Rebecca Bishop, Carter Gill, Taylor Clarke, Alex Garner, Leanne Sheasby, Gabrielle Jeffrey, Dominic Smith, Charlie Vicary, Isabella Baker, Emily Kenmore and Candice Hall. A very well done to you all. Just remember when you become rich and famous it all started at Husbands Bosworth School ! Acting Headteacher: Yvonne Durrant

By happy coincidence and with exquisite timing a long-hoped- for enhancement to the benefice team has been offered. On July 5th Revd Andy Rhoades will be licensed as a curate here. We believe we are fortunate that the Bishop has recognised this area as a suitable training benefice and seen fit to designate to us one of the four new curates allocated to the diocese. Under Revd Alison's care and supervision Revd Andy will be given the necessary guidance and opportunity to develop and hone his potential skills as he prepares for a future dedicated to ministry. After a settling in period his assis-tance should be of special benefit – not to be reflected in any easing of the work load but of the enrichment of our mission in being able to undertake more! It promises to be an interesting two-way learning curve: its success will be dependent upon mutual sup-port. The Welcome Service for Andy on 6th July will provide an opportunity to pray for God's blessing as we prepare to go into the future together. Rowena Nesbitt

Please look out as many items and books as pos-sible which may not any longer be of interest or value to you but may still appeal to someone else. Also bottles (with contents of all descriptions) will be welcomed for the bottle stall, as will home-baked cakes for the cake stall; and, please, also something(s) for helping us maintain our wide repu-tation for providing top class teas; this latter offering can be brought on the day; it’s always rather scary waiting to see if enough turns up – but, thanks to the support we enjoy each year, it always does! Please don’t let us down. Rowena Nesbitt BRUNTINGTHORPE VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE: Post Christmas Dinner ~ held on 21st Feb and raised almost £1000 plus a ‘matched donation’ from Alliance & Leicester of £500. Grateful thanks to everyone who joined us on the night and to the committee and families for their hard work in making this such a successful and enjoyable event. Open Gardens ~ 18th & 19th July 11am-5pm. It is hoped there will be at least 10 gardens open this year to raise funds towards the renovation of the village hall. There will be a competition for younger visitors, other attrac-tions plus light lunches & cream teas in the village hall. For further details please contact Steve Stratton (0116 2799164). Editor’s note: Apologies to Steve as the above items were omitted in May. BRUNTINGTHORPE HERITAGE GROUP There are a significant number of ‘Lost Villages’ in Leicestershire. DID YOU KNOW that Bruntingthorpe could have been one of them? The original settlement, adjacent to St Mary’s church, was abandoned in the middle ages presumably due to the plague. However, it was later re-established at the site of the present village. Alan Baker

RETIREMENT OF CHURCHWARDEN, MARGARET GODSMARK AND PCC MEMBER, PAT COX At the AGM of the Shearsby PCC on 23rd April, Margaret Godsmark retired after serving as Churchwarden over the past twelve years. Margaret has been on the PCC for forty years and we are pleased that she will continue as a member. Pat Cox also retired from the PCC ‘in order to make way for younger people’. Pat has served as Secretary, and for many years kindly hosted the PCC meetings at her house. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers as a token of our appreciation. Liz Austin ****************** FROM BLU-TACK TO SUPER GLUE: OUR BENEFICE SECURED FOR THE FUTURE The benefice of Husbands Bosworth with Mowsley and Knaptoft and Theddingworth; and the benefice of Arnesby with Shearsby and Bruntingthorpe shall be united to create a new benefice which shall be named “The Hexagon Benefice”, and the area of the new benefice shall comprise the parish of Arnesby with Shearsby, the parish of Bruntingthorpe, the parish of husbands Bos-worth, the parish of Mowsley and Knaptoft, and the parish of Theddingworth which parishes shall continue distinct. This extract, from a document signed and sealed by the Bishop of Leicester, consoli-dates the future of our benefice and consents to our status as The Hexagon Benefice dating from 1st May 2009. It is some seven years now since the first links were made between our two adjacent groups, each of three parishes. The union evolved and pros-pered socially and spiritually; its continuation was agreed upon, even welcomed, by the parishes, and legitimised by the diocese; however until it became fully recognised at a higher level, i.e.,by the licensing authority of the Church (the Church Commissioners) the bond would always be legally fragile. In 2002 diocese and parishes decided to take the first steps along the lengthy process that would lead to ultimate stability, invoking in its passage an array of ecclesiastical and constitutional formalities, obscure legal instru-ments and statutes along with the necessary ratification of parliamentary acts. The Pastoral Scheme referred to above testifies to the Bishop's final approval. This will be formalized and celebrated at a later date when Bishop Tim will install Revd Alison Hampton as Rector, the first incumbent of our new benefice. The Rectory is now at long last appropriately occupied. Continued on page 16
