Last line of defence: A CFA crew fights to save houses from a deliberately lit grassfire in Sunbury. Picture: Michael Copp
On trail of serial arsonistsBY TARA MURRAY
POLICE are investigating five fires in theSunbury, Diggers Rest and Macedon Rangesthat they believe were deliberately lit.
The fires occurred last Monday and Tues-day, with one coming within metres of homesnear the Ashfield Estate in Sunbury.
Three of the fires were in Sunbury, one inClarkefield and one in Diggers Rest. Police arelooking at the possibility the same person wasresponsible for all the fires.
The largest fire last Tuesday started near theCalder Freeway between Moore Road andBaggy Green Street.
The blaze started just after 1pm and spreadto Keeper Street and the Ashfield estate. A CFAspokeswoman said 20 hectares were burnt anda shed, car and some fences were lost.
About 28 CFA and MFB firefighters and a
helicopter fought the fire. Keshia, who livesnear Keeper Street, said firefighters had beenputting out a grassfire nearby.
‘‘I was with my partner. The fire brigade puta little bit of a fire out and they went away toget some water. All of a sudden the flamescame up from nowhere and they were massive.
‘‘It jumped the fence and onto the house. Isaid ‘there’s a house on fire’ and people[nearby] said they had to get out of here as it’stheir house.
‘‘It came up like a big ball of smoke and itwas just crazy.’’
Luckily, no houses were damaged.About the same time, firefighters were also
battling another grassfire in Sunbury, this timeat Vaughan Street and the Nook.
Last Monday, firefighters were called to firesin Sunbury, Diggers Rest and Clarkefield. Firesin Sunbury and Diggers Rest were lit within 20
minutes of each other. The fire in Sunbury was only 150 metres
from the location of the main fire the next day.The fire site at Diggers Rest was at the intersec-tion of Watson Road and Buckland Way.
The fire on Settlement Road, Clarkefield, broke out about 5.30pm later that day.
Sunbury senior sergeant Jeff Veriander saidit was a concern that someone was deliberatelylighting fires.
Acting Inspector Ian Jones, of Hume police, said officers were looking at people known tothem.
‘‘We’re looking at some persons of interest;just a list of people who like lighting fires.Information to Crime Stoppers on1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au.

Man left waiting after collapseBY TARA MURRAY
AMBULANCE waiting times in Sunbury haveto be addressed, Cr Jack Medcraft says follow-ing an incident he was involved in last week.
It took nearly 30 minutes last Wednesdaymorning for an ambulance to reach a man whohad collapsed and needed to be resuscitated inEvans Street, Sunbury.
‘‘The guy collapsed on the ground and therewas no sign of a pulse or him breathing,’’ CrMedcraft said.
‘‘I did CPR and he gave a bit of a cough andcame back to the land of the living.
‘‘Someone had called the ambulance and itwas a pretty stressful time waiting for it. Thestation is only four minutes up the road, but thegirls in the office said it took nearly half anhour.’’
Cr Medcraft said it was ‘‘the second or thirdtime’’ he’d heard of Sunbury residents being leftwaiting too long for an ambulance to arrive.
Metropolitan West area ambulance groupmanager Anthony Carlyon said AmbulanceVictoria was reviewing the case.
‘‘A Sunbury ambulance crew arrived within20 minutes and the patient was transported tohospital in a stable condition.
‘‘We would like to be able to send one as soonas someone calls us for help but sometimes thisjust isn’t possible.
‘‘Crews are dispatched from the nearest loca-tion able to provide the best response and med-ical outcomes for our patients.’’
Ambulance figures released under freedom ofinformation in November show in the first sixmonths last year, Sunbury had one of the worstresponse times to code one calls.
On average Sunbury residents waited14.32 minutes for an ambulance to respond to acode one call.
Kinglake had the longest response time, wait-ing on average 18.10 minutes.
“Our resources in Sunbury were upgradedmid last year and we now have two 24-hourambulances there,’’ Mr Carlyon said.
Cr Medcraft isn’t the only person frustratedby ambulance waiting times. Sunbury residentTrevor Dance said he had to wait for an ambu-lance to come from outside the area twice sinceOctober. He said the ambulance took more than20 minutes each time.
‘‘We have a pathetic ambulance system. It’sletting people down and if it happens to be alife-threatening case it could have been trouble.
‘‘Once the ambulances arrived the staff weregreat and treated me well.’’

Final goodbye: CFA members from around Victoria gathered to pay their respects to Peter Harry. Pictures: Shawn Smits
Hundreds farewelldedicated volunteerBY ANGELA VALENTE
Last journey:CFA firefightersline thecortege route.
PETER Harry was a good bloke who will beremembered as a passionate family man anddedicated volunteer firefighter.
Hundreds gathered last Wednesday at DixonField in Gisborne to farewell the father of two,who died on duty last month.
Mr Harry, 48, a second lieutenant in theGisborne brigade, was called to a house fire inBrantome Street on December 30.
He battled the blaze alongside his colleaguesfor about an hour until it was brought undercontrol.
While the sole occupant of the house escapedunharmed, tragically Mr Harry was foundunconscious outside during the clean-up.
An audio engineer, he leaves his wife Leanneand two teenage daughters, Alyssa, 19, andTegan, 16.
The Ash Wednesday bushfires promptedMr Harry to join the brigade on March 21, 1983.As secretary of the brigade at the time, MountMacedon group officer Ian Hay recalled MrHarry’s CFA service.
In 2002, Mr Harry took on the roles of brigadeand group communications officer and took con-trol of social media and website development.
In July 2010, he was elected third lieutenant ofthe Gisborne brigade and two years later waspromoted to second lieutenant. He stood downas group communications officer after 10 yearsbut still juggled his time to go to training.
“Just listing Peter’s service does not really
demonstrate how much he did for the CFA and, ultimately the community,” Mr Hay said duringthe service.
“A lot of people did not realise the work Peterdid with the local media to get the CFA messageout to the community.”
Mr Harry loved music and would often supplythe music and lights for brigade dinners.
“Peter would not have been such a big part of
the brigade and group without the support of hisfamily, and the CFA would like to take thisopportunity to thank Leanne and the girls fortheir generosity in allowing us to be part ofPeter’s life.’’
In closing, Mr Hay quoted a Facebook post bya Geelong firefighter, which said: ‘‘Rest peace-fully – you have done your duty. We will takeover from here.”

Zero toll gives police hopes for a record
Sergeant Geoff Neil is warning motorists to take care on the roads. Picture: Matthew Furneaux
BY ANGELA VALENTE
MACEDON Ranges highway patrolofficer-in-charge Geoff Neil says thiscould be the first fatality-free year onthe region’s roads.
Ten people died last year in theMacedon Ranges police area, whichincludes Mount Alexander shire. Ser-geant Neil hopes this year the com-munity can drive the figures down.
There were also 10 deaths in theHume area, which includes Sunbury.
‘‘I still think we could have a zeroroad toll this year,’’ Sergeant Neil toldthe Weekly.
‘‘That’s what we aim for, and thereare years when we’ve come close. We’re conscious that to achieve this,we’re exceptionally reliant on thecommunity.’’
In 2011, two people died on roadsin the Macedon Ranges and MountAlexander shires. In 2010 nine deathswere recorded.
The police Summer Stay campaign— which ran from November 16 toJanuary 6 and encouraged motorists
to stay safe during the high-risk holi-day period — was fatality-free in theMacedon Ranges, Mount Alexanderand Hume regions.
During the operation, 12,800drivers were breath-tested in theMacedon Ranges and 30 were caughtdrink-driving. There were nine dis-qualified drivers, 15 unlicensed and250 caught speeding.
Thirty unregistered and 15 unroad-worthy cars were found, 20 driverswere caught using mobile phones, and68 were fined for other offences, including not wearing seatbelts.
Across Hume, 17 drink-driverswere detected in more than 8000breath-tests. Police booked 34 dis-qualified and 40 unlicensed drivers. Atotal of 114 were caught speeding.
Sunbury Senior Sergeant JeffVeriander said police would continueto be out and about.
‘‘We’re not going to be dropping theball on this issue. It’s an ongoing issueand if you think you are safe to floutthe law then you have another thingcoming.’’

Delivering theWomen are reclaiming their birth rights as the role of the midwife is
Weight for age: Kyneton Health midwife Sam Wardweighs six-day-old baby Henry. Pictures: Paul Rovere
‘Women labour, women birththeir babies and we have theprivilege of attending.’ — Sam Ward
The first sign that the business of childbirth isunder new management is the change in thelanguage. “We don’t deliver,” midwife
Catherine Prestney laughs. “You deliver bread ormilk, not babies.”
It may seem like a small thing, but as hercolleague Sam Ward observes: “There’s power inwords”. And here, in Kyneton Hospital — thefirst regional Victorian hospital to receive baby-friendly accreditation by the Australian Collegeof Midwives — they choose them carefully.
“We have all been bashed about by medicallanguage for so long,” Ward says.
“As midwives, we really do believe thatwomen do the work. Women labour, womenbirth their babies and we have the privilege ofattending.
“I shudder when I hear a woman say, ‘Oh, youdelivered my baby’ because I think she has justgiven away all her effort, all of her work. You didit, chick! Don’t give it away.”
Kyneton Hospital provides midwife and GP-led care to all pregnant women, extending child-birth services to women who are regarded as“low risk” with 71 babies born here last financialyear.
“Our latest satisfaction survey shows morethan 80 per cent of women are ‘very satisfied’about the care they received during labour, whichis the highest we’ve ever recorded,” Kyneton’sdirector of nursing Tracey Hynes says.
The growing role of midwives reflects a philo-sophical change in maternity services backed bystudies showing this model leads to reduced useof epidurals, fewer episiotomies, caesarians orinstrumental births, translating to improvedwell-being and shorter hospital stays. “I think for
women, one of the biggest selling points of thismodel of care is the continuity,” Prestney says.“You know the midwife, there’s a relationship.”
It’s not about denying the specialists’ role orthe necessity of the medical model, despitesuspicions from some quarters.
Prestney, a career midwife who has spent 24years working in hospitals, knows only too wellhow things can go horribly wrong.
“I was a midwife for eight years by the time Ihad a baby and, of course, I had the worst birthever as often happens to midwives,” she recalls.
“Then, with my second baby, I had a placentalabruption at 29 weeks and he was prem (prema-ture) and that was awful because I had justworked a shift at the NICU (neonatal intensive
care unit) and then my own kid ended up in therethe same night.”
Nonetheless, both Prestney and Ward believethere is still an unnecessarily high level of inter-vention in normal, low-risk pregnancies, particularly in some of the larger hospitals.
“Some hospitals have adopted actual theatrescrubs as their uniform,” Ward laments.
“Midwives who are attending the birth suiteare already in their scrubs, which I think sends anappalling message that we are ready to whip youoff to theatre at the drop of a hat. It just reeks ofAmerican TV shows to me.”
Ward, who was mentored by a home birthmidwife and worked in private group practicebefore joining Kyneton Hospital, believes that inmany cases medical staff are not asking the rightquestions.

best of bedside mannersreborn, writes Sarah Harris
Welcome, stranger:Sam Ward on a homevisit to Henry’s mum,
Marieke Montgomery.
“If women are too noisy – they are in there say-ing, ‘You want an epidural?’ instead of asking, ‘Isthe level of midwifery care here adequate? Doyou feel safe here?’ It’s like, ‘We’ve got to startintervening; we have to fix this in a medical way’.
“Whereas if we have someone lookingdistressed we will ask, ‘Do you need to changeposition? Have you tried a shower?’
“It sounds so minimal, but it’s amazing howhaving a shower or bath can change things. Yousee them slip into a bath and just calm. Some willactually start nodding off between contractions.
“It’s about facilitating a normal physiologicalprocess for women at low risk. We encourageand support them to trust that their body knowshow to do this, which it does. It’s really primal.”
Ward agrees there undoubtedly are womenwho “want all the bells, whistles and machinesthat go bing” even if they are assessed as being atlow risk of complications. “There are womenwho want a big birth story,” she says.
But mums-to-be aren’t always aware of thespectrum of choices. “There are some doctors, for example, who think that if it’s your first babyyou can’t come here,” Ward says.
“It is a matter of getting the information out.We have changed our referral process so womencan refer themselves directly, so they don’t haveto go to the GP who does the pregnancy test andsays, ‘Yes, you are pregnant’. They can do ahome pregnancy test and come in and say, ‘I wantmidwifery care; I want to birth locally’.
“We provide a service where we are not goingto do things unless they are indicated, unless ithas been discussed, unless it is consented.’’

Potato showgets off ground
Potatoes and puppets: Emma Pryse, performing Mrs P Tati and the
Underground Dwellers at the WoodfordFolk Festival in Queensland.
BY ANGELA VALENTE
TRENTHAM puppeteer Emma Prysewill take her puppet show to newheights with a $15,000 federal fillip forher community arts project.
The funding will help her put on MrsP Tati’s Potato Stall, an interactiveinstallation combining visual art, puppetry, theatre and music. The showis inspired by Trentham’s potato-growing landscape and the harvestseason.
Ms Pryse, a puppeteer for 16 years, also received $2000 from HepburnCouncil.
“The centrepiece of Mrs P Tati’sPotato Stall is a portrait of com-munity,” Ms Pryse said.
“It will involve photographing asmany people in Trentham as possible— the population of our town is about1000 — and transferring the photosonto potatoes.
“They will be installed in a potatocrate and become part of the stall. Some potatoes will also become pup-pets and perform in the show.”
This project builds on work alreadydone by Ms Pryse, who created apuppet show at last year’s TrenthamSpudfest.
Since then she’s taken her puppetshow on the road, performing atfestivals and schools across the state. She has recently returned from a per-formance at the Woodford Folk Festi-val in Queensland.
Workshops will be held later thisyear at the Trentham NeighbourhoodHouse in the lead-up to this year’sTrentham Spudfest on May 18.

Mower mishap sets paddock on fireBY TARA MURRAY andANGELA VALENTE
No excuses: CFA and police will have zero tolerance for those who start fires either deliberately or accidentally. Picture: Michael Copp
‘If you cause a fire in thesecircumstances you will becharged. The police aretaking a zero-tolerancestance against fires thathappen as a result ofignorance or carelessness.’
— Leading Senior Constable Roger Barr
FIREFIGHTERS were kept busy lastSunday after a fire was started by alawn mower in Sunbury.
Officers attended the fire about12.46pm in Spavin Drive, Sunbury.
Station officer Jessica Walsh said 10trucks attended the fire, which wascontrolled within 30 minutes.
‘‘There are no suspicious circum-stances with the fire. It’s believed to bestarted by a lawn mower. It destroyedthe mower and some fencing.
‘‘It was about two-three hectares bigand initially threatened one property.
‘‘The occupant was ready with agarden hose and the fire didn’t causeany damage. Three properties wereaffected by it.’’
Ms Walsh said the man was mowinga small paddock when the fire brokeout. Firefighters stayed at the sceneuntil after 5pm.
She said they were pleased that res-idents were making sure their proper-ties were maintained and clean, but
extra precautions needed to be madeduring the hot weather.
‘‘It’s good people are being prepared
and making sure everything is goodaround their properties, but they needto be careful on warm days.’’
Romsey brigade group officerDavid Allen said the CFA restricts useof machinery, cutting equipment and
barbecues on total-fire-ban days andthroughout the fire-danger period.
‘‘We are now in an extremely dan-gerous situation. People need to bevigilant and aware of their environ-ments during this fire-danger period."
Leading Senior Constable RogerBarr of the Lancefield police said com-munities needed to understand firerisks. “On a windy day it only takes afew embers to hit the ground for a fireto take hold. If you cause a fire in thesecircumstances you will be charged. The police are taking a zero-tolerancestance against fires that happen as aresult of ignorance or carelessness.”

estimate the costs of rebuilding is to monitor building costs in your area. This includes the possibility of
obtaining a quote from a registered builder for the cost of completely rebuilding your property. Other tips
include:
Review your building and contents policy whenever there is a change such as renovation work,
improvements of any sort, or if you commit to a major purchase. Don’t forget to include the cost of
architects, surveyors, and rubbish removalists when calculating your building insurance. There may be
extra building costs if you’re on a steep slope or have limited access to your property. Include any luxury
fittings such as marble benchtops or gold taps.
Always include outside structures like a granny flat, storage facility, or freestanding garage.
With contents you want to state the current replacement costs. What you paid or their second-hand value
are irrelevant. Many insurance websites contain a residential building and contents calculator to assist with
such calculations. Landlords should remember to cover their contents including carpets, drapes, electrical
appliances, fixtures and the paint finishes on walls and ceilings. If you have any questions in respect of
these hints, or about any sale, purchase, letting or other real estate matter do not hesitate to call me John
Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call in to our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

My steak-out in Buenos
La Boca, Buenos Aires
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINAGetting there: Fly from Melbourne to
Buenos Aires via Dubai
Accommodation: Fertilia Downtown
Apartmentos, 25 De Mayo 734 Buenos
Aires
More details: tripadvisor.com.au/
buenos-aires
It’s fair to say my experience ofarriving in Buenos Aires wasn’t thebest, but the city was yet to show its
beauty and culture.Three things Aussies need to be
aware of in the city are: paying the$US100 to enter the country, eatingdinner late (from 9pm) and the timedifference — Melbourne is 13 hoursahead of Buenos Aires.
After taking all this in, I lookedaround for my airport transfer — anArgentinian holding a sign with myname on it. Unfortunately, he wasnowhere to be seen. I caught a taxi, communicating as best I could in trav-eller’s Spanish with the driver replyingin broken English. To my surprise, the50-something-year-old was listeningto an English pop radio station.
After speeding the whole way intothe city and nearly running intoanother car — they’re crazy driversover there — we arrived at the cent-
rally located hotel. Things looked upfrom here.
There’s so much to see and do —like indulging in a famous Argentiniansteak, joining a bus tour of the city’shot spots, attending a tango show, orvisiting the colourful town of La Boca.
For 80 Argentinian pesos (about$16), travellers can join a three-hourbus tour visiting the north (wealthyarea) and the south (poorer). It alsoincludes a visit to Parliament House, which is painted a dusty pink, and LaBoca, a ‘shady’ area famous for itsbrightly coloured buildings and soccer
stadium. Sinking your teeth into alarge, juicy Argentinian steak is some-thing travellers shouldn’t pass upeither.
Traditionally, locals eat theirs well-done but tourists can have it how theylike.
For $US20, I had a big medium-raresteak with vegies and dessert — what abargain!
Another ‘must do’ is visitingRecoleta Cemetery where famouspeople like Eva Peron (Evita) areburied. The gravestones are large andmany have rooms in front of them forvisitors to pray, view photos or lightcandles.
While in Recoleta, a walk to themarket might yield souvenirs for lovedones. For a night on the town, dinnerand a tango show is a real treat. I lovedwatching the talented dancers dressedin beautiful costumes moving to theSpanish beats.

Ballarat thwarts Gisborne GreenBY TEO PELLIZZERI
GRAND final day defeats failed toovershadow a competitive carnival forGisborne District Cricket Associ-ation’s Junior Country Week squads.
GDCA contested division 1 finals inboth under-13s and under-15s but lostboth on Friday, coming away with thedivision 2 title in under-13s.
Gisborne’s top-age under-13 team,Gisborne Green, took an unbeatenrecord into its division 1 final againstBallarat Gold but was foiled by anunbeaten opening partnership fromthe latter.
Gisborne Green made 7-133 off 40overs batting first, with six batsmengetting to double figures but onlyHarry Fisher (22) passing 20.
Ballarat Gold converted its strong
start though, with its openers reaching40 and retiring.
Gisborne would break through witha run out at 1-109, then again with noaddition to the score via Alex Ryan(1-5).
But Ryan’s wicket would be the onlyjoy for the bowlers as Ballarat Goldreached 2-136 in the 32nd over.
‘‘Ballarat bowled really tight and wewere a bit slow at the top of our bat-ting order,’’ team coach Darren Frewsaid.
‘‘Ballarat was in control for most ofthe game. They had one especiallygood batsman at the top of their order.
‘‘Every one of our bats got a startbut no one stood out.’’
The highlight of the week for Gis-borne Green was a match-savingeighth-wicket partnership of 97
between Adam Frost (42) and SamGraham (42) against the CentralHighlands Development Squad.
Gisborne was 7-47 chasing 116 forvictory only for the eighth-wicketstand to sweep the GDCA to victory.
‘‘For the week we had somestandouts, Sam Graham with bat andball, ’’ Frew said.
‘‘Jack Dillon opening the battingwas fantastic. And Roby Lane, bowl-ing left-arm off spin. He’d never bow-led it before but was practising withhis dad over the summer break.
‘‘He’d made the team as a left-armmedium pacer but after his first fewovers he was landing a few [spinners]so we kept going.’’
Frew credited the teamwork of hisside and organisation of the GDCArepresentative program for the team
making it to the final. Dillon led theteam with 103 at 51.50, while Laneled wicket-taking with five at 10.20.
Gisborne White was the week’sunder-13 success story as it won by 14runs in the division 2 final against Bal-larat Blue.
Riley Vernon made his second 40 ofthe week and Harry Brundell 27no asGisborne White posted 8-158 battingfirst.
