1. NFV and SDN are highly complementary, they are mutually beneficial but not dependent on each other (NFV can be deployed without SDN andvice-versa)
2. SDN can enhance NFV performance, simplify compatibility, facilitate operations
3. NFV aligns closely with SDN objectives to use software, virtualization and IT orchestration and management techniques
5G network will be based on slices on top of the same infrastructure
- NFV and SDN as the main enabler for:- the business agility – with its capabilities for on-demand, fast deployments- the network adaptability – requires redesign of network functions (to cloud native)- the flexibility – support for functions variance, flexible function allocation, etc.- the composition – putting multiple services together in a slice – end-to-endmanagement- the slicing – enabling separation at network level- the customization – enabling different network services of the same type- the programmability – software-only network functions and their interaction
with the physicalsystemsè Orchestration is the cornerstone for all of these features
• CAPEX and OPEX optimization.• Service agility.• Accelerate time – to – market• Rising need for new mobile services.• Deployment of new technologies, such as
VoLTE and VoWi-Fi.• Meet requirements of dynamic traffic patterns.• Automation to acquire higher efficiency.• Data centre consolidation and server
virtualization.
NFV Market Drivers And Constrains
Drivers
• Lack of governance “zoo of orchestrators”.• NFV HA service assurance.• Interact with legacy systems.• New pricing models.• NFV Adaptable Network.• Security challenges.• Get return and managing traditional
Technology and surviving SDN Hype Cycle.
Constraints
Role of SDN/NFV in the Networking Stack
SDN/NFV provide a novel virtual service enablement layer
- SDN/NFV platform acts as an end-to-end middlewarebetween:- A distributed heterogeneous infrastructure including dedicated components (e.g. radio), heterogeneous data centers
(compute & storage) and inter-connecting networks (fronthaul, backhaul, third party backbone, etc.)- Generic network functions implemented in software and running in virtual machines
- Virtualised IMS, EPC, radio and SGi components, home and enterprise networks, Application Servers, etc.
In the ETSI NFV architecture, the Orchestrator is the main decision point in the interaction between services and infrastructure.- The Orchestrator is the only component which has a complete view of the infrastructure resources- The Orchestrator allocates the resources for the services based on their requirements- The Orchestrator maintains the resources of the network services at the expected parameters during the life-cycle
management
- Functionality roles of the orchestrator:- Life-cycle management of the network services- Ensuring the network KPIs are fulfilled- Ensuring dynamic management functionality:
- Keeping system coherence while scaling- end-to-end fault management,- end-to-end reliability
A comprehensive MANO orchestrator is (still) missing…
Two approaches in regard to orchestration were taken:- Orchestrating from the infrastructureperspective
- Extending the VIM functionality towards proving service orchestration. Missing:- Adaptation to complex network services requirements:
- e.g. fault management, scaling, network function placement, virtual network configuration, information flow paths, security, reliability
- Orchestrating from the network serviceperspective- Extending the Network Management System to handle orchestration.
Missing:- Capitalize through native developed components on the cloud
opportunities: scaling, dynamic resource allocation- Fix the remaining problems: define the appropriate network
service KPIs, end-to-end fault management, providing end-to-end reliability insurance, etc.
è With more than 10 years of experience in network services and network services implementation as software and in cloud management, Fraunhofer FOKUS is in the unique position to understand and practically implement the connection between the twoworlds.

What is OpenBaton?
OpenBaton is an Open Source implementation of the ETSI MANO specification- OpenBaton aims to foster, within the NFV framework, the integration between the:
- Virtual Network Function providers- Cloud Infrastructure providers
- Functionality:- Installation, deployment and configuration of network services- Runs on top of multi-site OpenStack- Provides independent infrastructure slices- Support for generic or specific VNF management- Runtime operations: fault management, autoscaling, etc.- A large amount of virtualization use cases
e.g. core networks, M2M and Multimedia communication
- Designed for answering R&Drequirements- Easy to configure and to deploy- Providing a centralized view of the testbed
- No vendor lock-in: OpenBaton does not contain any vendor specific features. It followsopen specifications and it is open to the community
- Built from scratch following the ETSI MANOspecification.- The NFVO uses the ETSI NFV data model internally for the definition of the Network Service and
Virtual Network Descriptors.
- Allows interoperability- Being interoperable is one of the challenges brought by the fragmented ecosystem in the
management and orchestration area. It requires a lot of work to make two different vendors solution working together à need of a single vendor-independent platform
- Gives a fast access to Fraunhofer know-how- Large experience in network functions implementations (as software)- Large experience in cloud network management
The reference implementation of the ETSI NFV MANO specification
− Open Baton is based on the ETSI NFV MANO v1.1.1 (2014-12) (*) specification. It provides− A NFV Orchestrator managing the lifecycle of Network Service Descriptors
(NSD) and interfacing with one or more VNF Manager(s) (VNFM)− A generic VNFM, which can be easily extended for supporting different type of
VNFs− An Autoscaling Engine which can be used for automatic runtime management
of theVNFs− A Fault Management System for automatic management of faults− A set of libraries which could be used for building your own VNFMs (vnfm-sdk)− A dashboard for easily managing all the VNFs
− It integrates with OpenStack as main VIM implementation
Open Baton the game changer into the NFV environment
- Every time a trigger is received, it executes an action which can be (depending on the level of criticality):- Heal the VNF- Switch to standby theVNF
VNF VNF
For an end-to-end network requirements control the NFVO can be integrated with the WAN Manager
Instantiation of multiple slices on top of the real network for connecting VNFs- Realizing traffic steering/QoS- Dynamic adaptation to network
conditions
Service chaining: realizing data paths for the end subscriber sessions
Integration with the SDN WAN for Network Slicing use cases
- The NSE provides an abstracted view of the inter-datacenter networking topology allowing the instantiation of guaranteed bandwidth levels on top of the physical network elements
The 5G Berlin is a federation of several testbed sites each having a dedicated scope and purpose, aiming to complement each other and to focus on distinct customer requirements.
