The brief was to execute an office space which reflects Smart Dubai’s

identity as a progressive, innovative organisation, while also providing the

right environment for a creative, productive and engaged workforce via

seamless technological integration.

During the SMART Dubai fit out Summertown Interiors adopted these key

sustainability initiatives:

1. Waste Management – green waste strategies were implemented to

minimize our environmental impact during the build. Approximately 50% of

waste was recycled and sold to scrap dealers for this project.

2. Sustainable Purchasing – 30.87% of project purchases met

sustainable criteria.

3. Energy & Water Consumption – the energy and water consumed

during the fit out was measured on a daily basis. Tracking and monitoring

consumption, enabled Summertown to implement measures if there was

an unexpected issue during the fit out. It also provided complete

transparency for the client.

Summertown was appointed to deliver the refurbishment of

Etihad’s training centre. As a working live environment, the

project required a precision led multi phased approach to

ensure continuity of operations for the client. A key project

requirement for Summertown was to manage the varying

department’s needs and priorities – and to maintain a 24 hour

operational cycle to ensure a fast track delivery program

across the three floors could be achieved.

design professional to ensure that Summertown continuously delivers high quality fit out projects.

where he helped the company grow from one office to three. Within 2 years he was appointed Branch

Manager of their flag ship office and consistently increased the company’s turnover year on year. In

2014 Jack left his home country for new pastures and challenges relocating to Dubai. During his first

few years in Dubai Jack utilised his strong property management skills and developed his knowledge of

Gerhard brings over 20 years of experience to the fold including many years in project management,

procurement and commercial roles in the construction industry. In 2007 he came to the UAE to work as

Rajitha holds a diploma in Quantity Surveying, and moved to the UAE after completing five years in civil

construction in Sri Lanka. Rajitha joined Summertown as a junior estimator for the carpentry & joinery

division in 2001 and after working through the ranks within the estimation and contracts departments, he

now leads the operational side of Summertown’s business. As a key corporate team member, Rajitha

leads the procurement team, contracts, project co-ordinators and the administration function to ensure

Health, safety and environment is of the upmost importance to Summertown to ensure the protection of the environment, staff, clients and partners, both on site

and at our own premises. This charter outlines our core objectives in relation to health, safety, environment and guiding principles which are to be followed.

Objective

To protect the health and safety of our staff, visiting stakeholders and affected parties by ensuring that the necessary training and communication is provided to

minimize the absence of staff, incidents in the workplace and incidents on site.

To ensure that the scope of work conducted by Summertown has no negative or adverse impact on the environment.

Guidelines

In order to achieve the objective Summertown has outlined the following guidelines:

• Summertown is to comply with health, safety and environmental legislation that meets best practice international standards.

• Summertown’s management and their employees are held accountable for their conduct in the workplace, in compliance with Summertown’s Health, Safety

and Environmental Charter and supporting HSE documentation as detailed within the HSE Management system. As individuals, all personnel have the right

and obligation to reinforce health safety and environmental best practice and to correct any practice or condition that does not meet these guidelines.

• Summertown’s management sets smart project specific HSE objectives and targets and monitors the performance of progress through key performance

indicators on a monthly basis. Performance is monitored in an open and transparent manner.

• Summertown’s management commits to ensuring that all employees and other interested and affected parties have read and understood the Heath, Safety

and Environmental Charter and understand their expected level of participation, to create and sustain a culture that supports a healthy safe working

environment without negative impact on the environment

• Summertown’s management commits to ongoing measurement and through continuous improvement, shall deliver health, safety and environmental standards

beyond compliance.

• Summertown’s Quality Management System includes process for the delivery of projects, our Human Resources processes, and our Sales and Marketing processes.

• Summertown’s ISO representative is responsible for conducting bi-annual internal quality audits and co-ordinating one external audit per year.

• Summertown is committed to continuous business improvement in all fields of activity through defined goals, measurable indicators inline with its Quality Management System.

• Summertown is committed to building and improving client-supplier relationships to enable us to define, measure and improve our quality standards.

• Feedback from clients and partners will be continually measured and monitored through its Customer Feedback System, and appropriate actions undertaken to business process improvements as a result.

community investment charterCommunity Investment CharterThis charter outlines our approach to community investment and aims to create a positive impact by bringing value to the community in which we are living, by focusing on three main areas:

EnvironmentSummertown is committed to paying its part in the collective effort in reducing the carbon foot print of our company. We are utilizing LEED Ebom* as a framework in order to address the following key areas:

Reduction of energy consumption Reduction of water consumption Reduction of site and office waste Introduction of sustainable purchasing policies Employee wellbeing Adoption of sustainable transportation measures

Our aim is to not only improve our environmental impact, but also to reduce cost streams associated with building operations, offer healthier and more productive workspaces for our employees, and in turn achieve recognition for our approach to sustainability. Additionally, we offer support on the execution of green project options to our clients.

Education and DevelopmentWe believe in educating others and sharing our experiences in order to encourage other like minded organizations to do the same. Individuals from client organizations or partner firms are invited to workshops in Summertown or we attend to various events as a speaker to share our journey and knowledge in CSR and discuss the aspects that address how companies can take improvement actions that deliver environmental, economic and corporate benefits. We are also able to showcase our own office premises and demonstrate a live example of how companies can enjoy the benefits of occupying a green interior.

We are also committed to improving and developing the knowledge of our own team members through memberships of sustainability focused groups and associations, and training and development of our employees through LEED certified accreditation programs.

* LEED EBOM (Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance) is the tool for the ongoing operations and maintenance of existing commercial and institutional buildings. The certification system identifies and rewards current best practices and provides an outline for building’s to use less energy, water and natural resources; improve the indoor environment; and uncover operating inefficiencies.

community investment charterVolunteeringWe are committed to supporting our employees to become involved in the wider community, by lending their voluntary support to programs that enrich the quality of life and opportunities for other people. This support may take many forms and allows employees to utilize part of their working week to be actively involved in either their own volunteering initiatives or to join forces with other employees and to volunteer through the Summertown Employer Supported Volunteering Scheme. The intention is for employees to participate in ‘giving back and supporting the community’ and to allow all employees of Summertown to share in that effort. The employees are given 2 days paid leave every year to participate in voluntary activities during working hours.

Measuring and MonitoringSummertown measure and monitor the success of its community investment strategy to evaluate performance across the short, medium and long-term.

Examples of Community Investment Projects

• Cash donations to various charities.

• Employee matched funding schemes, e.g. where an employee gives an amount to a charity, which is then matched by the company

• Volunteering projects which may work with a particular community organization to support a diverse or vulnerable group, e.g. people with illnesses/disabilities, homeless people, children in need, older people etc.

• ‘CSR in Action’ and “Green in Action” workshop programs – free for individuals from client or partner firms to attend whereby attendees can learn how to, and share their own experiences of integrating Corporate Social Responsibility into their organization
