1 Mid-week Reflection #8 May 20, 2020 By The Rev. Nancy Yee Greetings to God’s children in Christ Jesus! SUMMERTIME IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC Well, we’ve passed the long week-end in May, a time when we usually start thinking of summer plans. Crazily, those plans are now cancelled, postponed, changed, transformed, put on hold, etc. However you want to say it, summer will look drastically different this year. How have your summer plans been interrupted/changed by the pandemic? +++ The boys of summer (baseball) are in limbo like the rest of us. Since December 2019, MLB, the organization overseeing baseball in North America, is continuously updating their strategies in order to salvage some part of the season. As of May 9, they intend to begin a short stint starting early July. Such optimism and chutzpah! If you’re so inclined, here’s an article laying out the timeline of how the coronavirus has impacted MLB and the game. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/a-timeline-of-how-the- coronavirus-pandemic-has-impacted-major-league-baseball/ Here’s an interesting article for baseball lovers. The article is called, “The 1918 Flu Pandemic did not spare baseball.” https://baseballhall.org/discover/1918-flu-pandemic-didnt-spare-baseball +++ Summer this year will not be summer. Not in the way we’ve understood it to be. Remember all those things that made it feel like summer? They’re gone. Or if they’re not, they’re not around in the same way. Summer always felt like it didn’t really begin until school ended in June with most of June filled up with field trips, cleaning out lockers, grads/proms and all that entailed. With the pandemic, school ended this year for most of us in mid-March. The markers and landmarks for our feelings of what life is supposed to be like have all changed and/or evaporated. Hundreds of thousands worldwide will miss celebrating graduation this year. But, at least some experienced prom thanks to Lebron James. He curated a special television event for American students and teachers to celebrate an important milestone in anyone’s life – graduation. Here’s a wikipage on the event if you want to read about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduate_Together:_America_Honors_the_High_School_Class_of_2020 The commencement speech was given by President Barack Obama. Here’s the transcript. https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/16/politics/obama-graduate-together-speech/index.html +++ Yes, the Summer of 2020 will not be the same. All those things that gave us a sense of summer have mostly disappeared. We’re going to have to re-think how we’re going to do summer in such a way that it will give us that sense of being carefree. Maybe playing summer songs will help reclaim those summer lovin’ feelings. Remember the songs of summer? My huge playlist of my favourite summer songs, include Chicago’s Saturday In the Park, Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Blues, Seals & Croft’s Summer Breeze (although some think the Isley Brothers rendition takes this song to another level), Sly and the
