On behalf of the Housing and Residence Life staff, welcome to Fall 2011! We are excited for your arrival in August. We are quite busy so far this summer preparing for another wonderful year.

Most of your questions should be answered within the information provided. Over the sum-mer we encourage you to contact your room-mate to discuss items to bring and to get to know each other. We are committed to making your stay a pleasant and successful experience!

Please feel free to contact us if there is anything we can do to assist you. Very soon, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of living on campus for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year. Move-in Day

Who Does What? : Residence Hall Staff

The Department of Housing and Residence Life employs a vari-ety of people to serve and assist you.

Assistant General Manager (AGM) There are two assistant general managers in North and South Halls. One oversees residence life and the other oversees operations. The AGM of Residence Life supervises the RAs, assists with programming efforts, and processes judicial cases. The AGM of operations is responsible for overseeing all clerical tasks associated with assignments, accounts receivable and resi-dents‟ accounts.

Residence Life Specialists (RLS) There are two Resi-dence Life Specialists. They supervise the RDs, handle stu-dent concerns, and advise student involvement groups.

Resident Directors (RDs) Supervise RAs. They reside in the building and handle any issues associated with the hall. RDs keep weekly office hours to meet with residents. Their office hours and telephone number are posted throughout the building.

Desk Coordinators & Desk Assistants (DCs/DAs) work Monday through Friday at the front desk. They monitor the lobby, sort mail, manage amenities available at the front desk, and answer student questions.

Resident Advisors (RAs) They are there to assist you with any questions you may have. They will foster a high quality liv-ing and learning experience for the residents. RAs also provide extra safety while traversing the exterior and interior of the com-munity. RAs will plan programs for your floor. If there is any-thing you are interested in doing/seeing in the talk to your RA!

Desk Staff manage operations at the front desk in the eve-nings and on weekends.

Campus Service Workers maintain the cleanliness of the residence hall common areas.

Maintenance repairs hall facilities, conducts routine mainte-nance to facilities, and repairs items in common areas and rooms.

Assignments Staff work in the central office. Contact them with questions about room billing and assignments.

Week of Welcome kicks off August 17th!

First year students can begin moving into the halls on Wednes-day, August 17th. Students should check in for Week of Wel-come activities at the Recreation Center from 9:00 a.m.—7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Commuter students will check in at the Henderson Center concourse from 7:30 a.m.—9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Freshman First Class begins with the President's Convocation in the Henderson Center Arena at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Au-gust 18th. New for 2011-12! Freshman Networking Se-ries: An initiative that will fa-cilitate networking opportuni-ties between first year students twice a semester. Students should come out and take ad-

vantage of this great opportunity! Advertisement will be posted in August. Freshman Interest Groups—(FIGs) a program designed to bring what is learned in the classroom to the campus living ex-perience. Marshall University's Freshman Interest Groups goal is to provide small, thematic living learning communities to enhance students‟ academic and personal experiences during their first year of college. Students of the same major and with similar academic interests live together with other freshmen on the same floor in a residence hall taking 2-4 classes together during their freshman year. Students get to know their class-mates and floormates by attending classes, residence hall activi-ties, and study groups together, or just hanging out. Available FIGs

There are many free opportunities for you at Marshall University. If you enjoy sports, you may attend football, basketball, volleyball, and many other sporting events for free. Just bring your student ID to the ticket booth in Gullickson Hall and pick up your free ticket. For student ticket information you may visit the MU website; just click on “Athletics.” If you are interested in theater, the Marshall Artist series provides performances for free. To pick up tickets, just bring your student ID to the box office in the performing arts center. A schedule of these events can be found on the Marshall website or by calling 696-6656. There is also a foreign film festival each semester. The Student Activities Pro-gramming Board (SAPB) also does a great job of hosting free entertainment. Look for post-ers of these events in your hallway or visit www.marshall.edu/student-actvities/sapb

Ritter Park This is a great place to take a walk, sun bathe, or throw a football. It has trails, a rose garden, and an outdoor amphitheater. Old Central City Central City is a neat walk through the past. There are antique stores, specialty shops, and a farmers market to enjoy. Huntington Museum of Art A great museum complete with hiking trails

and performances you can check out! Pullman Square Located right in downtown Huntington, there are shops and restaurants to explore. Pullman is home to Starbucks, Uno‟s, Empire Books, Game Stop, Max & Erma‟s, and the Marquee Cinemas just to name a few. And don‟t forget the live concerts on the quad.

Programming in the Residence Halls is something to get excited about! This is yet another fun and free opportunity. In addition, you have a voice! If you want to tie dye, see a mixed martial arts demonstration, participate in a political debate, or learn how to change the oil in your car, let your RA know. We are committed to hosting the activities and speakers you are interested in. Not only will programs allow you to expand your knowledge in areas you may not expect, but you will meet other residents, faculty members, RAs, and other hall staff. Programming also has it‟s wild and wacky side. Activities such as Pie your RA, World Series of Pop Culture, Tug-of-War, and Capture the Flag are frequently held by the RA staff. Look for fliers in your hall for dates and times. Bring your friends and be prepared for a great time!
