Return to the Farm

In mid March a group of Year 7 pupils visited “Jamie‟s Farm”, a farm set up and run by an ex-teacher and his family and friends to offer inner city children a taste of an alternative lifestyle. Our pupils relished the challenges that were put in front of them and truly entered the spirit of the week by living and working on the farm. During their time they impressed the staff so much that we were contacted and offered an invitation to the official launch and fundraising event of “Jamie‟s Farm”.

Marvin and Ernestina were selected to join Mr Watson and Miss Jones to talk about their experiences and how they felt farm life had impacted on school life. Both pupils rose to the challenge which saw Marvin and Miss Jones being interviewed in front of 60 people. The interviewer was the well respected broadcaster and presenter David Dimbleby, known for his work on Question Time and Panorama. Ernestina also had quite an impact on the guests as she was assigned the role of photographer. This gave her plenty of opportunities to share her thoughts about the farm and just how enjoyable our trip was.

Once again the visit to the farm was a reminder of just how mature and talented our pupils are. Both Year 7 pupils took full advantage of their opportunity to shine and after speaking to the guests it was clear they had made a lasting impression. It was also a wonderful reminder to myself that we should never underestimate the competence and courage of our young people and that, given the chance, they can all achieve great things.

Year 7 students plan Day Trip to Zoo to say

goodbye to their Learning Mentor:

Miss Jones‟ Year 7 students have been lucky enough to have one of the greatest Learning Mentors in their classroom since January 2009. Greg Howse made an everlasting impression on these Year 7 students and in return the students wanted to send him off properly as he begins his teacher training through Teach First in Birmingham. These Year 7 students planned a day out to the London Zoo to spend their last day with Mr Howse and in order to investigate the different types of animals they might find in comparison to their previous Farm Trip in Bath Spa. Overall the Year 7s had a lovely day out and want to wish Mr Howse the best of luck in his new adventures. Below is Ernest‟s letter thanking Mr Howse.

“Thank you Captain,

Thank you for helping me with my Shakespeare work. Thank you because you helped me improve my work. Also, thank you for helping me with my Maths work and English work. Thank you for listening to my rock star music because you know that I am a ROCKSTAR. Thank you for letting us watch an excellent film. I remember the Ninja story that you told me because it was great. You are a true ninja.

I know that you will make a great teacher because you are brave and you are not scared to be a teacher because you are calm and you are a ninja. Also it has been a lot of fun having you here with us. You will be a good teacher because the kids will love you and they will say to you that you are the best. I enjoyed playing connect four with you and also you are a very good connect four player.

We will miss you because you are a really great man and you are sweet and you are great at everything you do. You have helped me with a lot of my work and I really thank you for what you have done for me. It was just my luck to have you with me. Thank you for teaching me how to be a brave and a good teacher”.

Year 3 and 4 girls Football tournament. Our Year 3 and 4 girls football teams took part in their first tournament in May. The tournament took place at Millwall Community Scheme Centre, located at the Millwall FC home ground in Bermondsey. There were eight teams consisting of eight players

taking part. Six of the players were on the pitch for four minutes with a rolling substitution. In total the girls played 10 games. As this was the first football tournament for our girls they were quite nervous but once they got on the pitch they were fine and performed very well coming third overall. After the tournament the girls had the opportunity to go into the stadium and see the Millwall football players changing rooms and seating areas for match games which was very exciting. We look forward to seeing the girls gain more success in future tournaments

Year 10 Scientists discover enhance their Evolution

studies

On Friday 8 May, a party of Year 10 Science students visited The Natural History Museum in South Kensington. The aim of the visit was to enhance their studies of the famous and controversial scientist of his time, Charles Darwin, who is famous for presenting the evidence that all species of nature evolved from their previous ancestors. The Year 10 students were able to recognise Charles Darwin‟s theories as they toured the very popular Evolution, Primate and Bird galleries. As they toured the galleries, the group completed worksheets in which they considered examples of Darwin's work on adaptation and specialisation - making observations and drawings of their own. The museum has some fascinating exhibits in wonderful surroundings, and a great time was had by all. The boys demonstrated hard work, enthusiasm and impeccable behaviour throughout the afternoon, and were a credit to Globe Academy. Susan Hillyard Science Teacher

Year 6 pupils create their own animation

In the week beginning 15 June, a class of Year 6 pupils visited the Upper School to attend a weeklong workshop in creating animation. The aim of the workshop was to create their own movie using the hi-tech Apple Mac laptop. The pupils worked in groups of four students from beginning to end. Their first task was to create their own characters and background for their screen on paper. Once they had done this they could finally work on the Apple Mac to shoot their short movies. This was a great experience for the Year 6 pupils and I look forward to working more with the Lower School pupils in the future.

Envision team strikes again!

On 13 May, the Year 11 Envision team ran a recycling workshop for Year 6 pupils with the help of representatives from Southwark Council. The Year 11 students f i r s t g a v e a presentation to Year 6 a b o u t w h y recycling is important and then allowed the Year 6 pupils to ask some intell igent questions. The Year 11 students then ran a carousel of very varied act ivi t ies aimed at promoting the three R‟s- Reduce, Reuse and R e c y c l e . T h e activities included making junk mail jewellery, recycled paper, instruments and designing t-shirts to promote recycling with other young people. Staff were very impressed by the ability of the Envision team to lead the lesson, and the Year 6 pupils were respectful and ve ry we l l behaved. Miss Amy Oxley Extended Schools Coordinator

Debate Mate!

On 24 April, the newly formed Globe Academy Debating Society attended the „Debate Mate‟ 2009 final held at the famous London School of Economics. The team of Year 7 pupils, Milad, Chemelie, Fadiya, Farhana and Tasmiah met with students from across London for the final of the „Debate Mate‟ programme, an after school club aimed at developing students debating skills, run by undergraduate debaters from top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. Although the team didn‟t compete in the debates this year, they took on important roles in timekeeping and chairing the debates and commenting from the floor. „Debate Mate‟ organisers were extremely impressed by the insightful comments made in the debates by some of the Globe Academy team, who were by far the youngest members of the debate audience. The „Debate Mate‟ programme will return to the academy in September and is open to all students from Years 7-11, so we hope to see new faces to build on this years success when the club begins again next term. The Tower of London

On Friday 10 July, a group of 30 Year 7 visited the Tower of London. Students in Year 7 have been studying the Middles ages for the last two terms, so this was a great opportunity for them to see what remains of Medieval London. We visited the White Tower and the Crown Jewels before attending a workshop on the Normans to consolidate our History curriculum. The rest of the afternoon was spent touring the tower and discovering its hidden secrets and medieval treasures. We learnt much more about the Middle Ages through our visit and even got a sneak peek at what‟s on the agenda for history in Year 8 with Henry VIII.

Japanese Club enjoy a Sushi Day

The Japanese club is not only about learning Japanese. Earlier on in the term I held a Sushi Day to help introduce Japanese food and eating etiquette to the Japanese club. I bought different types of sushi such as the maki roll, California roll, nigiri and inari sushi. We also had a selection of desserts such as dorayaki, puri, mochi, melon pan and haicyu. Sushi” is actually the Japanese word for vinegar rice, “Su” means vinegar and “shi” comes from the word “meshi” which is Japanese for rice. The rice is then topped with varying ingredients, not just raw fish, which a lot of people associate with sushi. Most of the students enjoyed eating both the maki and California roll but a few didn‟t like the nigiri sushi as it did have raw fish on top of the rice. Some of the students put too much wasabi (a very hot Japanese) sauce on their sushi which was very funny when they realised what they had done. Overall, we had a good time sampling different types of sushi, learning to use chops t i ck s and mak ing chopstick holders. Miss Pauline Solomon Teaching Assistant

Globe Academy goes to

Thorpe Park

150 students from Years 5-9 who had completed the Sam Learning 'Ten Hour Challenge', ten hours of online revision outside of lesson time, were treated to a day out at Thorpe Park as a reward on Monday 30 June. Students battled the queues in the 30 degree heat to ride on rollercoasters such as 'Nemisis' and 'Saw' and many got drenched, a secret blessing in the heat on the water rides such as the Log Flume. Students are encouraged to keep using the Sam Learning interactive revision tool over the summer to keep their brains in gear and parents can check their child‟s progress by going to www.samlearning.com and typing in the following information: Centre ID: SE1GC Username and password: Students date of birth and initials (DD/MM/YY/first name initial, surname initial) If you then look at „My progress‟ you can see how regularly your child is using the site, what exercises they are completing and their scores. Globe Academy Family Forum

The first meeting of the Globe Academy Family Forum was held on 9 June 2009. The purpose of the forum is to allow parents, carers and other family members to contribute to decisions made by the school on issues such as homework, school trips and rules and routines. The group works as a focus group for the school to consult with parents on issues and for parents to bring concerns to the school staff. In addition, the Family Forum will organise social events for the whole school community. The meetings are to be held once every half term for the families of students from the Nursery to Year 11. Year 2’s Trip to Broadstairs Beach This term in Geography, Year 2 has been learning about the features of the seaside and how it is different to London. In our History lessons last term, we learnt about how the seaside has changed from 1900 until now. Because we have been learning so much about the seaside, we thought we had better go on a trip to see what it was really like for ourselves. So, on Wednesday 24 June, all of Year 2 went on a trip to the Broadstairs Beach in Kent. It took us two hours on a coach to get there, but as soon as we saw the sea we forgot about the long journey. We walked down through the town of Broadstairs to get to the beach, it was a nice seaside town but lots of children thought it smelled like fish. As soon as we got to the sand we took our shoes and socks off and went paddling in the sea. The sea was cold but didn‟t stop us having fun jumping over the waves and looking for crabs and seaweed. After we had eaten our sandy packed lunches, lots of children decided to dig for treasure in the sand. Some children wanted to dig to Australia and some just wanted to bury themselves! We have been learning about rock pools at school, and Rabbani, Amaal and Tania tried to make their own rock pool in the sand. We didn‟t see any crabs but there were lots of big seagulls trying to steal our lunch. After lots of digging we were all ready for an ice cream, which we had to eat really quickly because it was so hot they were melting all over our hands. Before we went home, Cerys, Sada and Kashardy collected lots of seashells to take back to school. We all walked back to the coach to go home and were so tired from our day that we slept on the two hour journey back to school. We all had sandy hair, shoes and pockets but it had been a brilliant day and an invaluable experience for the children. Miss Harris and Miss Ferendinos Year 2 and Year 3 Teachers

Green fingers in Year 5

In Year 5, we have been growing our own sunflowers. Some of the children took their sunflowers home over the May half term. When they came back to school they were huge. In Science we have been learning about plants and the life cycle of a plant..

Samirah, Year 5

Year 5 and 6 visit the Aquarium

Year 5 and 6 have been lucky enough to have some student mentors, from Kings College London, come in to work with them for the school year on a Wednesday afternoon. They have helped them in the classroom with different activities and last week invited the pupils to spend the day at Somerset house and to visit the London Aquarium with them. Below are Hajera‟s thoughts on the experience.

Miss Caroline Field Year 5 Teacher

When it was 10 June, some of Year 5 went to the London Aquarium with our mentors. They have been working with us. We saw different types of fish and how they live in their habitat. We also went to do a quiz at Somerset House and we learned different activities like street jazz, break dancing and philosophy.

Hajera, Year 5

Nursery and Reception visit Kew Gardens

As part of our topic on „Plants and Minibeasts‟ the Nursery and Reception classes visited the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. The children observed a variety of exotic plants that grow in different climates and were amazed at the size of some of them.

The nursery children were particularly excited when they saw bananas growing and were fascinated to find out about where chocolate comes from. They saw the large yellow pods growing on the cocoa plant and had the opportunity to handle some dry cocoa beans.

The following week Miss Saunders brought a group of children over to work with the nursery children and they helped them make their own exotic flowers. To give the topic a more hands on experience, the children also planted seeds at the beginning of the term and have been caring for them over the past few weeks. They are developing an awareness of the basic needs of plants and have observed their sunflowers, beans, radishes and potatoes grow into healthy plants.

We would like to thank the parents who brought in plants to add to the children‟s vegetable patch.

Globe Academy Against Knife Crime

In order to complete their final DiDA unit entitled „Have your Say!‟ a group of students formed a team called „Triple Seven‟ - these were Elina Desaine, Ahmed Hussain, MaDannica Abad and Jeffrey Cheng. Their team‟s campaign was to 'Make Knife Crime History'. They had to take complete control of the project including; researching the cause, creating a corporate identity, producing a set of Business documents to be used by the team and creating a set of promotional materials which would be used to promote their cause.

Triple Seven worked really hard and won the support of the Principal Mr Baigent, who donated a sum of money so they could promote their idea throughout the academy and community. As a first step to their campaign, Triple Seven presented their campaign to every year group in the Middle and Upper Schools in assembly. Secondly, they designed a badge and a petition form and asked students, staff and visitors to sign their petition. They got over 1000 signatures and they sent these to the Mayor of Southwark.

The Mayor of Southwark was so impressed with the work the pupils had done that he invited them to attend Peckham Town Hall on Wednesday 8 July to present their petition to the Council officially. This was a huge event involving press and police and we are very proud of our pupils for being there.

The team would like to see more search arches installed in schools to make them a safer place to be. They would also like the government to change the laws relating to knife crime and impose harsher sentences to those that commit knife crime or carry a knife. All students received an A* for their project and on behalf of Globe Academy, we would like to wish them every success with their campaign and their future careers. Mr Anthony Wootten Assistant Vice Principal, School of New Technologies

Year 1 Family Learning Week The Family Learning Week gave parents and children the opportunity of working together in the classroom. In Year 1 we had an excellent attendance from parents who seemed to enjoy working with us. They took an active part in Numeracy lessons throughout the week, which involved lots of practical activities with money, playing shops and solving money problems. The lessons were a good occasion for the parents to see the children in a classroom environment as well as being able to become familiar with the teaching methods. The children enjoyed showing their parents how much they had progressed in Maths over the year. It was also beneficial for the parents to see in which ways they could support their child‟s learning at home. We hope that parents will be invited in, to join us in our class more often and in other areas of learning. We loved having them there. Miss Sherry Agunbiade Year 1 Teacher

Celebrating Success Evening

On Wednesday 24 June, The Pentagon Hall resembled Santa‟s grotto as Globe Academy prepared for their first Celebrating Success Evening. The front of the stage was covered with gold, blue and silver wrapped prizes which were to be presented to the 170 prize winners from Reception through to Year 11. The prizes recognised outstanding achievement and effort for academic performance as well as acknowledging participation in extra-curricular activities and excellent attendance. The evening began with a cheer from Mariana and Ernestina, our two Year 7 cheerleaders. This got everyone‟s attention for the night before Mr Andrew Richardson, our compére for the evening, began the presentation of our first set of awards. These were being presented to Lower School pupils for academic effort and achievement swiftly followed by the presentation of the attendance prizes and SAM Learning awards. The SAM Learning prize was awarded to the pupil in each year group who had spent the highest number of hours on the computer programme, devised to help pupils revise. After these presentations we carried on to the secondary academic and effort prizes. However, before moving onto different awards each of the presentations was broken up with a number of different performances, the Year 4 dance group performed a dance based on circles which included licking their lips and the

Year 7 and Year 8 vocal group sang an inspirational gospel song. The audience also enjoyed thought provoking readings from our outgoing Year 11s‟ coursework as well as readings from two of our Year 7 pupils. Amelia and Chiemelie read their letters to Barack Obama which they had delivered to the American Ambassador at the Embassy in London themselves in January. The final prize to be awarded was the Marshall award which was presented to the highest achieving Year 11 pupil, Elina Desaine . This prize was presented by our sponsor and Chair of Governors, Paul Marshall, who also gave a speech quoting Amelia‟s advice to Barack Obama “ if you work hard, you can achieve anything”. This sent the pupils and parents home with an inspirational message. The evening then ended on a high note with a very slick performance by the Year 7 and Year 8 dance group who have been rehearsing every Friday after school for the last 10 weeks, demonstrating what you can achieve with hard work. This group are going to be competing in the Southwark Dance Challenge in a couple of weeks and we wish them luck! The Celebrating Success Evening will hopefully become an

annual event and we congratulate all of the prize winners, a

list of whom are on the following pages.

ARK Photography Competition ‘Rhythm of Life’

We are pleased to announce that Ossama Chawki, Year 7, was the runner up in the 11-14 category of the ARK Photography Competition 2009. Competitors had to enter a picture around the theme of the „Rhythm of Life‟ - reflecting music, movement or sounds in some way. As a runner up, Ossama is now the proud new owner of a very smart digital camera. Congratulations to Ossama and we look forward to seeing more of his pictures being taken with his new camera in the future. Ossama‟s picture was entitled „Potter‟s Wheel which you can see below. Dan Dunn leaves an impression on Globe Academy

On Friday 5 June, Globe Academy staff and pupils watched the world famous artist Dan Dunn in awe as he threw paint at a huge spinning canvas in time with an upbeat soundtrack. What this picture would be, no one was quite sure of until the final spin of the canvas. Everyone sat in anticipation to see what would be revealed and finally a picture of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker in Batman appeared. There was a gasp of admiration and spontaneous cheers from everyone in the audience.

After the excitement of the beginning of the show Dan then introduced himself to the audience. He had always loved drawing and design and had been in the business for the last 30 years producing cartoons, caricatures and finally moving into his favourite talent, performance art. So far we had witnessed his performance art, so he then went on to display another of his talents, how to draw a caricature. It was Mr Baigent, Principal who was under the spotlight and Dan Dunn‟s beady eye. Mr Baigent looked slightly anxious as he stood and posed whilst the audience laughed at the picture that was taking shape in front of them. It was a very different drawing style to the spinning canvas shown 10 minutes previously, but just as impressive and the pupils certainly enjoyed seeing their Principal standing up on stage, anxiously waiting to see how he would be portrayed. Luckily for Mr Baigent, Dan wasn‟t as nasty as he admitted to being to some of his customers. Although, the caricature still had the pupils fixated, it was the spinning canvas and throwing paint that the pupils loved so the music came back on and more paint was thrown to finish the show. This time a black and white picture of John Lennon was revealed.

Globe Academy was extremely lucky to be one of the ARK schools to have Dan Dunn, who had been at the celebrity filled ARK Gala dinner the night before, perform for them and the pupils certainly appreciated this flocking at the end of the performance to take photos of the pictures and to speak with Dan Dunn himself. The caricature of Mr Baigent and the picture of John Lennon were donated to the school so keep your eyes peeled for them appearing in the school shortly. Miss Harriet Townsend, Marketing

Globe Academy Year 11 leave in style!

On 26 June, clients in the Hilton London Docklands Hotel didn‟t know what had hit them. They were surrounded by dressed to impress Globe Academy Year 11 pupils celebrating the end of their GCSEs‟ and for some of them their school career before they go onto college or Sixth Forms in other schools. Not only did some of them dress to impress but arrived in style and turned up in limousines. After having pictures taken on the riverside terrace the pupils and staff were served a three course Caribbean buffet. Students then danced the night away,

pausing only to vote for the prom King and Queen, and the person most likely to be Prime Minister, be a millionaire and be abducted by aliens. The awards were then handed out, and the year group and staff joined the prom King and Queen for a dance. A great time was had by all, many thanks to all the staff who came along to support the event and good luck to all of our Year 11s in the next stage of their lives. University Links

In June, five Year 9 students attended a week long Summer School at the London Southbank University. The focus of the week was offering taster sessions for various university courses such as Engineering, Sports Science and English Literature. Students also focused on the skills that they would need to develop to get to university, such as emotional intelligence and personal organisation. Students also had the opportunity to work with the LSBU student ambassadors to find out more about life at university. On 9 July, ten Year 8 students visited King College University for an Introduction to Medicine day. The day consisted of a series of interactive lectures on DNA and its uses and culminated in a quiz at the end. It was an interesting insight into cutting edge science and gave students the opportunity to reflect on the types of job a degree in science can lead into. The next day, 10 July, it was the Year 9s turn to visit Kings College University for an Introduction to University Day. Students took a tour of the campus, met up with current student ambassadors to quiz them about university life, and had a taster lecture. The Year 9 students had another opportunity to take part in a workshop at Oxford University on July 16 held at the Said Business School. The aim of the workshop was to introduce students to life at university through taster lectures, and to develop students' study skills through workshops, using mind games and other study skills techniques. In July, Year 10 pupils took part in a series of summer school courses run throughout the city as part of the Aim higher Initiative. The courses, held at venues such as Greenwich University and Lewisham College, offer students taster sessions on studying subjects such as engineering, animation, games design and construction at degree level. We hope that all of these opportunities have shown our pupils what they can experience and how far they can go by going on to study at university. Miss Amy Oxley, Extended Schools Coordinator

Double victory for Globe Academy in the South London Cup!

Globe Academy finished their football season in flying form this year claiming the winning title in both the Year 8 and Year 10 divisions of the South London Cup. The South London Cup is a football competition played over the academic year with schools from all over Southwark entering making it an exciting competition for everyone involved. The Year 8 team were the first to step up to the challenge of winning a cup final for the first time as Globe Academy. In order to get to the final the Year 8 team had already beaten seven other schools in a number of exciting and sometimes nail biting games, overcoming injuries and last minute substitutions on the way. This made it even more important to claim the final victory as Globe‟s. On the day of the match the boys kept their cool and prepared themselves to face their opposition, Elmgreen School. No one thought it would be an easy game but the team rose to the challenge and completed their season with a stunning performance to win the match 4 -0. The first goal wasn‟t scored until the end of the first half, when Jordan Ibe managed to put Globe Academy in the lead. Issa Kamara, a visiting Year 7 pupil to the team and man of the match, and Deris Sesay then followed in Jordan‟s footsteps scoring the final goals of the match. It was a brilliant game to watch with many of the staff and pupils going to support the Year 8‟s. Coach, Osman Ali said: “Winning the final was a huge reward for the end of a challenging season. I am very proud that all of the team‟s hard work paid off”. On Friday 22 May, the Year 10 football team had more work to do in order to claim their title as winners of the South London Cup 2009, but through sheer determination they managed to do so. As the Year 8 team had done, the boys had already worked hard and shown real commitment to beat a number of other schools to get to the final. The boys knew how hard they had worked to get this far and with the added pressure of having to live up to the Year 8s' performance three days earlier, they fought right down to the last penalty to make sure that they were champions as well. After a gruelling match, they beat London Nautical School 2-1 on penalties with Shamal Dixon scoring both goals. By going to penalties it made the match an exhausting and highly nerve racking game to watch with both teams fighting up until the final whistle. Winning both divisions in the same year is a great achievement for both football teams, making sure that they put Globe Academy on the map as a school to look out for in future football games. Congratulations to all those involved and we look forward to more success next season!

Boxing Trip!

On Thursday 18 June, 11 students from Years 7, 9 and 10 were invited to take part in a boxing workshop run by The People‟s Sport Academy. For most of the students this was the first time attending a professional boxing gym, so as you can imagine they were feeling quite nervous as they didn‟t know what to expect. The session was run by boxing African Nations Champion, Franklin Egobi and Amateur Boxing trainer, Marcus Luther. The students were able to work at a good pace to complete exercises set for them. They also learnt the names of the positioning which a boxer may use when competing. At the end of the session they were given the chance to put what they had learnt into practice and spa a 2 minute round with Franklin. One of the students made such a good impression on the coaches that he has been given an invitation to come back to the gym for further development.

Globe pupil gets set for London 2012

Outside of school one of our Year 9 pupils has been working on a hidden talent to make sure that our pupils do not just succeed in football but a whole range of sports. We are very proud of Amin Badr, who as well as being the British Under 16 Champion and Belgium International Under 16 A Class Champion was also the Under 14 Bronze Medallist at The European Championships for Taekwondo. Amin began Taekwondo in 2003 and has been training hard since to make sure he remains a champion. He currently trains with the London Team Taekwondo, and is aiming to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as pursuing a full time career in Taekwondo.

This is a fantastic achievement and we wish Amin all the luck for the future and look forward to seeing him compete at the Olympics in a few years time.

On your marks…Get set…GLOBE!!!

Team Champions: Eagles!!! With non stop action and high energy from the moment the starter pistol sounded, pupils from the academy surfaced to participate in what was to be a great day for all. With fantastic performances and displays of maximum effort from everyone who took to the track, parents, teachers and students were left in awe of our athletes.

On the Track The day got off to a blistering start with the Junior Girls 600m. Other competitors could not quite keep up with the pace being set by Amelia (7E) who comfortably took gold. Jamal Watfa (9A) took first place in a fiercely contested line up for the Year 9 boys 200m and Benjamine (7B) finally let her feet do the talking as she ran away with a gold medal in the 100m. Alieu (10E) could not be stopped in the 100m as he dominated the arena with a show of sheer class.

On the Field In the field events Tumisha, Year 7, decided to raise the bar in the high jump with a spring that saw her seal the top spot and claim pole position. In the throwing events, Sudiqullah‟s (9E) discus is yet to land having been launched into orbit, sealing him a clear victory. Ackeem (8B) leapt his way to success in the long jump bringing home gold. Well done to Elizabeth (7A) who came out on top of what quite possibly was the closest competition of the whole day; she kept her composure and now holds the title of number one discus thrower for next year.

Every performance was worthy of a write up, but to report on all would take forever. Congratulations to those athletes who were successful enough on the day to wear more than one medal, and to those who fell short but enjoyed the occasion none the less. We are looking forward to a bigger and better affair next year!!! See the next page for some evidence of the action.

Thank you to all staff that helped on the day.

Well done to everyone!

Southwark KS3 boys Basketball Tournament

In May 2009, I ventured to a packed Harris Academy sports hall with the Key Stage 3 basketball team to take part in the final tournament of the season. Although it took a while for the team to play to their usual standard of basketball once they had gained confidence they began to bring discipline and organisation to the game. Louis Baffour in particular seemed to grow into his defensive responsibilities, harrowing every single ball that entered his zone with moments of creativity and skill. In the game against Bacons College Sahr Saffa was quick enough to get the ball to Frank Tolette for a quick break. Frank then dribbled around a couple of players and fed the ball to Martynas Cernauskias on the wing. Left with acres of space Martynas took the opportunity and 'swoshed' the ball into the net for three points. After this net the boys began to really fight for the rest of the tournament showing a valiant effort.

ARK Voices

In February 2009, children from Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 began rehearsing a variety of songs taken from different countries for a mass ARK Schools choir concert on 15 June at the Barbican Concert Hall. The Barbican is one of London's most prestigious venues and has staged many celebrities including Lemar and Elvis Costello. The songs were chosen to celebrate the range of cultures within our school and the other ARK Schools taking part. Each of the schools rehearsed individually, and Globe Academy came together for their first joint rehearsal on 2 June with Walworth Academy followed by a full mass choir rehearsal with all schools taking part uniting on 10 June.

There were some extraordinary vocalists from Globe in the “One Voice” ARK Schools choir, four of whom were selected to perform solos at the event. These pupils were Patrina Davis, a Year 5, Oluwafemi Akinfolarin, Chevelle Thomas-Whitley , Kristy Fagbohun and Michael Nwokolo from Year 7. All of these pupils overcame their nerves and performed brilliantly. However, it was not only singers who represented themselves from Globe. Ten Year 7 pupils also performed at the opening of the concert as part of the

Globe Djembe drummers in the foyer which certainly got a lot of attention.

The whole performance was an incredible opportunity for the pupils taking part, and when they first started I don‟t think they quite knew what to expect. They had the chance to work with world famous musicians, from the Australian classical conductor, David Lawrence to the lead Bangledeshi singer Gouri Choudhury. As well as performing to a couple of celebrities including Bob Geldof, the pupils performed to the sponsors and Managing Director of ARK and ARK Schools all of whom were very impressed. The evening was a great success and we are very honoured to have been involved in such an event.

Summer Concert

There was a buzz in the air on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 July as musicians gathered to perform for their final concert of the year later that evening. As always, the concert had a varied programme including many different styles, cultures and genres of music ranging from Pop to Classical, Jazz to Heavy Metal and music from Africa to the West Indies. This varied programme also led to a variety of ensembles and instruments. At the Classical end of the spectrum we heard a violin ensemble, woodwind and vocal solos, for the Jazz and Heavy Metal we heard a drum kit solo and the Djembe drums and steel band took us to Africa and the West Indies. The concert was well supported by the pupils‟ music tutors, school staff and parents who were appreciative of how much work the pupils put in to p r e p a r i n g f o r t h e i r performances, as well as how nerve-racking it is to stand up and perform in front of an audience. There was also an excellent camaraderie amongst the pupils who cheered and applauded every piece of music performed. This was a fantastic way to end a busy year for the Music Department. Congratulations to all those involved for making it such a wonderful evening. Miss Harriet Townsend Marketing

Globe Academy pupils perform for the stars!

On Thursday 4 June, 12 lucky pupils travelled to the disused International platform at Waterloo to rehearse their performances they would later be performing for celebrities whilst they arrived at the renowned annual ARK Gala dinner. Tega and Lorbey, our two star pupils from this year‟s production of „Fiddler on the Roof‟ performed Mariah Carey‟s and Whitney Houston‟s “When you Believe” with a full live band and ten lucky Year 7 pupils joined Mr Smith and Claude Deppa in a Djembe drumming group to perform some typically African rhythms. They all produced stunning performances and were given smiles of approval of the guests as they paraded by.

The ARK Gala dinner is a huge event held every year to raise money for our sponsor charity Absolute Return for Kids (ARK). Every year a number of celebrities attend which this year included, Uma Thurman, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Liz Hurley to name a few. Our pupils were extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to experience being part of the glitz and the glamour of the event and the guests were extremely lucky to be serenaded by such talented pupils.

Lower School Orchestra with a Twist

Selected pupils from the Lower School have experienced a new kind of music making this term. Every Friday after school they have worked with the ARK Music Mentors to form their own orchestra and create their own piece of music. Instead of learning an instrument first and then joining an orchestra they joined the orchestra first and are all learning different instruments together from scratch. The orchestra is formed of trumpets, violins, keyboard and a cello. They performed their work in June which was very successful and we look forward to hearing more of their performances next year.
