What a terrific time of year to be a Sports Club member! Have you noticed the excitement around the club over the past three months? If you haven’t, where have you been?

We ushered in spring at the North end of the Club. Our outdoor tennis facility was transformed as we played host to The ATP Tour’s Dallas Tennis Classic.

We saw six of the top 50 players in the world battle it out for a hefty $125,000 purse. Nearly 5,000 tennis fans passed through the gates with plenty of support from our membership. Thanks to those who volunteered their time in making this event a success.

May was a busy month on the pro golf calendar and according to some tour pros; the 2012 HP Byron Nelson Championship is one of the highlights. Nearly 250,000 people lined our fairways for a glimpse of golf ’s elite. It’s always fun to spend time around the Club not knowing who you may bump into. I biked along 2008 Nelson Champ, Adam Scott. His legs are much longer than mine so it was difficult to keep up with him!

As we head into summer, I hope you’ll make a splash at the coolest pool in town! When the temperature outside hits triple digits, gather up your family and head to the Family Pool, which hovers around 80

degrees. I can hear a collective “ah” already. Extend your lazy days of summer and stick around for the poolside Grill N’ Chill…it’s not to be missed.

This is the best time of the year to keep your YOU year resolution. There are many upcoming activities to enjoy at our Club. You will want to make sure to stay connected through the club website because you don’t want miss a thing!

To borrow a famous advertising line…”membership has its privileges.” Professional tour members and its fans can experience our Club facilities only one week out the entire year. For the rest of us, we can enjoy the pro treatment every day. I hope you’ll get out and take advantage of your membership…summer is calling.

Enjoy!

S ummertime at the Club has evolved over the years to be an

incredibly active time. It is striking to see the number of activities planned for

all levels of membership in the coming months. There is literally something fun to do every day this summer!

For the kids, you can’t miss out on our Summerfest Camps. Our Swing Serve and Splash Camps are always a hit as well as our focused Tennis and Golf Camps. The Family Pool scene will be a blast. Each weekend is themed with daytime games and activities as well as a delicious Friday night Grill N’ Chill in Racquets or the patio. We kick off summer with a “Carnival” theme on Memorial Day Weekend. Other weekend themes include; Olympics, Water Fun, and Superhero! I also have to mention one of my favorite Club events is just around the corner, our Independence Day Celebration. We will have several days of activities around property, including our festival on the Golf Range and fireworks on the 18th Green. We will be celebrating on Saturday, June 30 given that July 4th falls mid-week this year.

Now, I have to mention some great competitive key note events. We will Tee off with the Men’s and Women’s Golf Club Championship, June 8 – 10. Toward the end of summer, we will wind down with the popular MGA Cottonwood Cup, a “Ryder Cup style” event, August 25 – 26. For tennis, the second annual Mercedes Benz Tennis Mixed Doubles Championship, sponsored by our good friends at Park Place Motorcars is being contested June 15 - 16. The winning couple will then go on to play in the Sectional Tournament in the fall.

Above and beyond all of these great activities, there is so much more in all areas of the Club! Attend member cocktail parties and our specialty dinners in the Members Lounge. Take advantage of Happy Hour from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m in the Lounge or Trivia nights in the Pub. There really are so many amenities that will enhance your Club experience! Like our Board of Governors Chairwoman says, “Make this a “You Year.” I encourage you and your families to take full advantage of your Club this summer!

Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas has been

awarded the honor of a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.”

Rusty Wilson, Golf Course Superintendent, has led the effort to

obtain sanctuary status for our property and is being recognized

for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Four

Seasons Resort and Club is the 27th course in Texas and the 972nd

in the world to receive the honor.

“Four Seasons Resort and Club has shown a strong commitment

to its environmental program. They are to be commended for

their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course

property,” said Joellen Lampman, Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary

Programs Director.

“To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they

are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a

number of areas,” explained Lampman. These categories include:

Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management,

Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety,

Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

“We launched the initiative with the support of our private club

members last spring when the staff undertook a plan to meet the

exact environmental criteria of the certification application,” says

Paul Earnest, Four Seasons Director of Golf. “During that period

we were not only able to incorporate the operational practices, but

we were able to reach out to the community through educational

initiatives at the J. Eric Johnson Community School. The students

there helped us install more than 30 birdhouses on the TPC Four

Seasons golf course to foster bird nesting. We are extremely proud

of Rusty and the entire Golf Operations staff for accomplishing this

milestone in our Resort’s golf history.”

This environmental recognition is particularly relevant as the

property is host site of the annual HP Byron Nelson Championship,

the largest golf event in Texas. It is held annually in the spring and

attracts professional golfers from around the world who compete for

the trophy and recognition that honors the memory of golf legend

Byron Nelson.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses,

endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides

information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance

wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. We are excited to be

recognized for our efforts and will work to improve our sanctuary

even more in years to come.

G ood golf swings are described as rhythmic and balance. A key ingredient is

footwork. Footwork sets the tone for balance and rhythm. At address, your body

weight should be distributed evenly between the feet and toward your toes. When

you are at the top of the backswing, the movement of your feet has shifted weight to the right

foot. As the downswing starts, your body weight moves back to the left foot and off the right

heel, then to a position at the finish where all the weight has moved to the outside of your left

foot. Now, your right heel has released off the ground and you use your toes of the right foot

for balance. ‘Feeling’ the swing with your feet is an excellent way to control balance and create

rhythm. Strive to create this movement every time and you are on your way to a good golf swing.

1. At the top of my backswing, my weight has shifted to my right foot.2. Into my finish, my weight has now gone completely to my left foot.Tim’s tips

P lease join us in welcoming back Scott Abernathy as our new Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping.

Scott may be a familiar face to some as he has served as superintendent at our 36-hole facility from 2001-2004. He left to pursue his doctorate at Texas A&M University where he partnered with Dr. Richard White and began a consulting practice throughout Texas specializing in Bentgrass greens management. The portfolio included eight golf courses including the TPC Four Seasons in 2008 after its redesign by Weibring Wolfard. Abernathy expects to complete his Doctorate in Turf Grass Physiology in December. During his studies, he designed and developed a golf course management software that benefits organization and resource efficiency in golf course maintenance.

“I am excited to return to this outstanding facility,” said Abernathy. “I look forward to providing my leadership to the golf maintenance and landscape team and applying my expertise to the health of one of our most valuable assets, our TPC and Cottonwood Valley golf courses.”

Abernathy has previous experience both as an intern and as an employee of Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. He received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in 1995 and his Masters in Turf Grass Physiology in 1999. A native Texan, he is married and has two children. He enjoys playing golf and heads a church ministry group.

We are excited to have him on the Four Seasons team again!

SPORTS TALKROBiN SCOTT

DiRECTOR OF SPORTS

W hen hitting a successful volley, you need to have an excellent ‘feel’ for the tennis ball. That feeling should be smooth and with no vibration in the racquet. Here are a few hints to make your volley a weapon.

First, the bottom edge of the racquet should lead on the stroke. This is a slight opening of the racket face at the contact point of the ball.

Second, punch the volley, turn the shoulders and punch the ball. Your racquet should be six inches to one foot during the follow through. This adds a control factor and allows you to direct the ball.

Last, the volley must be a shot, which is part control and part power. Usually a winning point will have two to three volleys hit before the point is won. Control sets up power. Good luck with your new weapon on the court!

Summer Hair Care Tips:I imagine everyone must be using SPF sunscreen by now during the hot Texas summer, but did you know that your hair can show signs of stress and aging from sun exposure just as much as skin can? Follow our salon tips for keeping hair healthy & hydrated this summer:1. Wet hair before going into the pool or ocean. This helps prevent chlorine or salt water from drying out hair. 2. Next, use a sunscreen or protective lotion with SPF especially created for hair. We love Aqua Seal from

Kérastase – a waterproof protective cream with a UV filter and Provitamin B5, to reduce the sun’s damage and keeps hair hydrated and supple.

3. At night, apply an overnight treatment for maximum effect to repair and hydrate. We recommend any of the Kérastase masks, (my favorite is Masque Nutri-Thermique) combed through clean hair, and left on with a shower cap to help the hydration penetrate deeper into the hair. Rinse out in the morning and voila! Beautiful, shiny hair!

4. Schedule an intensive Kerastase Treatment & Blow Out at the salon for only $85. We recommend these once a month to repair hair through the summer season.
