1. The exposition of the novel begins on the day of the reaping in District 12; each district is forced by the Capitol (government) to select tributes for The Hunger Games. Katniss and her best friend Gale are hunting before the reaping.

2. Against all odds, Prim Everdeen is selected at the reaping, but her older sister Katniss volunteers to be the female tribute in her place. Peeta Mellark is selected as the male tribute.

3. Events continued...

Bad vs. Good examples based on The Hunger Games:❖ BAD- “Why does Peeta do that?”❖ GOOD- “Why does Peeta make his

crush on Katniss public? Is he looking out for himself or for Katniss? I think that his feelings are true, but does Katniss return his affections, and what about Gale?

“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.”

I never forget a face I see!!

Notice there is NO page number, character name, and no real explanation or personal connection to the quote. The quote should be explained and then also a connection should be made.

Page 19: Summer Reading Grade 9 Mrs. Schneider and Mrs. Kinzer, Survey of Literature teachers.

“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.” Katniss Everdeen, Pg 85I think the emphasis is on the word “last”. This person is your last hope- you're putting everything into them, in the hopes that, maybe, just maybe, you'll come out victorious. They're what you dream about when you're trying to look towards the upside of your unfortunate situation. This reminds me of when I focus on doing everything for my Grandma’s memory when things get difficult, whether it is sports or school.
