SUMMER QUEST 2015 Enrichment WEEK 1 JUNE 22 – JUNE 26 Medieval Movie Madness with Mr. Duff June 22 – 26 $240 Ages 8 – 12 Lights. Camera. Action! Make armor, helmets, costumes, and other medieval props as well as act out a great story that you help create! The finished product will be a 30 minute movie to keep! You will finish the week with a cast party and viewing of the movie. Class taught by long time Meridian School teacher, Mike Duff. Recently, Mr. Duff’s students in the Kent School District won awards for short movies at the International Student Film competiton. Machine Sewing 1 with Little Hands Creations June 22 – 26 $330 Ages 6 – 12 Come and learn a terrific life skill! Beginners will start with the basics and move on to create some wonderful treasures. Advanced sewers will be able to choose from many patterns and projects with varying levels of difficulty such as: quilts, summer clothing, stuffed animals, and MORE! No experience is necessary for boys and girls to learn the basics of safety and how to operate a sewing machine while advanced students can expand on skills they already have. Kids will have fun as they build on their skills each day and should have a solid knowledge of sewing by the end of the week. Ubuntu Skate & Game Camp! June 22 – 26 $320 Ages 6 – 12 We will spend each morning learning the exciting art of skating while having loads of fun! All levels of inline and quad skating will be taught, from beginner to advanced skaters. We will cover everything from the basics to Freestyle-Slalom, advanced cool tricks, hockey and other games on skates. Our afternoons will be spent outdoors at the Meridian Park where we will continue our adventure filled with fun activities & games. Kids will have fun as they build on their skills each day and should have a solid knowledge of sewing by the end of the week.

WEEK 2 JUNE 29 – JULY 3

Photography/Photoshop Essentials June 29 – July 3 $250Ages 8 – 12

Our time will be split between learning the basics of photography, taking mini-field trips to shoot photos, and learning to enhance and alter our photographs on the computer. While learning the basic rules of photography, campers will explore portrait work, still life, macros, depth of field, composition, and more. We will utilize the natural setting of the 11 acre Meridian Park, set up studios in our work space, and take advantage of the urban setting of 45th street in Wallingford. Each day we’ll focus on different elements of photography, and campers will have photography assignments to accomplish in the evening. Instructor is Mary Allen, The Meridian School Technology Teacher.

Kids’ Carpentry June 29 – July 3 $300Ages 5 – 10

Kids’ Carpentry is a hands on toy building class designed to teach girls and boys, practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. While kids construct fun and exciting projects they are also empowered to become independent thinkers—building confidence, self esteem, and a repertoire of practical skills that will last them a lifetime! At the end of the session, each child will go home with at least one but often three or more wooden toys that they have made and painted by hand. Learn more at kidscarpentry.com

Olympic-style FencingJune 29 – July 3 $190Ages 8 – 159:30 AM – 12:30 PM only (no PM child care available)

Fencing is a wonderful sport, engaging both the mind and the body in a vigorous and fun activity with historical tradition. An Olympic event since the modern-day Olympic Games began in 1896, it is truly a global sport and nearly 150 countries worldwide compete with athletes ranging from youth to seniors. Kung Fu and Self-DefenseJune 29 – July 3 $250Ages 5 – 151 PM – 4 PM (no AM child care available)

Kung Fu is a great workout and also teaches respect and discipline. Training in Kung Fu makes your child stronger, disciplined, increases confidence, plus they learn practical self-defense skills. They will also have a chance to sample other styles like Jujitsu, Aikido and Kong Su. Oom Yung Doe teaches 8 Martial Arts as 1 for the most balanced training available. WEEK 3 JULY 6 – JULY 10

Brick Animation: MagicJuly 6 – 10$350Ages 7 – 15

Disappear, teleport, transform. Transmorph, telepear, disform. Teleform, transappear, dissaport. This class will not disappoint. Pre-Engineering with LEGO®

July 6 – 10$1659 AM – 12 PM (no PM child care available) Ages 5 – 6

Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possibilities of engineering with the LEGO® system. With access to over 100,000 pieces of LEGO, your child will have the opportunity to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineer-ing instructor to guide them. Paper-Mache’ BeastiesJuly 6 – 10$330Ages 8 – 12

Bring your imagination and creativity! Participants will create original beasts using a combination of new and recycled materials. Dragons, monsters, fairies, killer fish, or whatever you can imag-ine! This will be a hands-on, messy, and fun week! The process is open to in-novation and invention, and is only limited by time. Each day will be dedicated to a different step of the process, including building bodies, designing and making eyes, teeth and claws, painting, and festooning with feathers, fur, or scales. The technique is best suited for imaginative creatures and reptiles and amphibians, but any type of creature is possible with perseverance and a creative mind. Materials f or the course will be provided, and include non-toxic materials including white glue, masking tape, recycled paper, modelling clay, fabric, and more. Tools include sharp edges and hot-glue, which will be used under supervision. Instructor is The Meridian School Technology teacher Mary Allen.

Come meet Mrs. Froglegs,owner of FROG LEGS, KIDS CULINARY ACADEMY in Seattle and join us in our Cooking Adventure Series. We will travel to exotic destinations—the Rain Forest, Hawaii, Under the Sea, to Africa—and each day we will focus on stories and food that relate to our days adventure: banana smoothies, monkey bread and rainbow fruit skewers during rainforest adventure. Each day will include healthy food and fun stories that will make a lasting impact. Taste your way around the world, exploring unique flavors and ingredients to make delicious food! Kids will learn the basics of cooking, baking and creating some FUNtastic dishes. They will learn to stir, wash, pour, blend, measure and best of all how to make

yummy foods from around the globe. The children will be able be hear stories that relate to the food or area we are focusing on as well as learn about the ingredients they are using, where they come from and how they work together. They will create fun-filled memories while cooking. Classes are designed to reinforce literacy and math skills and will include a combination of cooking and baking. Jump Rope Fun with RopeWorksJuly 13 – July 17$1709:30 AM – 12:30 PM (no afternoon child care available)Ages 6 – 12

What fun! Learn rope jumping from the program developed by one of the nation’s best competitive jump rope athletes—Rene Bibaud. She is a five time World Rope Skipping Champion and former artist and coach with Cirque Du Soleil. Students will learn individual skills, tricks, double-dutch, increase stamina and improve coordination all with an emphasis of “doing your best” and HAVING a BLAST!

This class is only open to children with sewing experience. First, students draw the design for an outfit they would like to make. Then, they learn how to make a pattern and cut out the fabric. The week is spent in a creative whirlwind as they sew their creations together to show at a fashion show for the parents at the end of the week! WEEK 5 JULY 20 – JULY 24

Chess Camp – ElementaryJuly 20 – 24$300Age 5 – 12

All chess ability levels are welcome. This is a great opportunity to introduce your child to chess before the school year, and prepare them for chess club. Instruction in both the basics as well as more advanced topics will be provided Every student will be evaluated and matched to ensure challenging play. Plenty of time for practice and tournament-like games for fun and awards! Emphasis is on fun-everyone is a winner!

Tree World/Climate CampJuly 20 – 24$300Ages 12 – 15

The Seattle metro area has many great parks, trails, natural wonders and this group will spend the week exploring some of them. Some destinations may be familiar and hopefully some may be new, either way the group will spend a bit of time learning about the area and how it looked, how the area was used in earlier times. The group will be outside every day. Plan accordingly and expect to put in 15 to 20 miles of walking for the week. The group will wear pedom-eters each day to calculate miles and steps taken this week. Michael Foster from Plant for the Planet-Seattle will lead this week.

Soccer Camp 1 July 20 – 24$230 Ages 5 – 7

The camp will spend time on ball handling, shooting, conditioning, team work and fun “soccer” games. In addition, there will be time spent with coordation, balance, and team work activities. Meridian School’s PE teacher Regis Thevenet, a long-time Emerald City FC and high school soccer coach, leads the group. This is a full day camp! Soccer shoes encouraged.

WEEK 6 JULY 27 – JULY 31

Destination Science: Roaring Rockets July 27– 31$290Ages 5 – 12

Arts-n-Crafts with Little Hands CreationJuly 27– 31$330Ages 6 – 12

Expand your imagination and let’s make some art! Students will learn new techniques in creating many different types of arts and crafts, from wearable art, like jewelry, masks and crowns, to pop-up books, candle making, weaving, sewing, knitting, and papier-mâché. Art and Architecture with LEGO®

August 3 – 7$165Ages 7 – 12 9 AM – 12 PM, (no PM child care available)

Explore great works of art and architecture through LEGO! Collabo-rate in small groups to build grand structures such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the tree houses of Papua New Guinea, and New York’s Empire State Building. Follow in the footsteps of master artists with LEGO interpretations of sculp-tures, mosaics, and stained glass. Teamwork and creativity take high culture to the next level! Engineering Challenge using LEGO® August 3 – 7$165Ages 7 – 12 1 PM – 4 PM (no AM child care available)

Create a massive machine in the style of a Rube-Goldberg invention. Learn how to build a variety of motorized devices such as an air compressor, scissor lift invention, and a marble moving crankshaft in this advanced engineering camp. Then, collaborate in small groups with other engineers to accomplish large-scale missions! Students will learn new techniques in creating several different types of jewelry. The class will work with wire, seed beads and glass beads, as well as learning to make their own beads out of different materials. Then, students will string their beads, making their own creations, which include necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
