Es war einmal in St. Moritz…

... exactly 150 years ago: a small mountain hillside village, without a good environment for agriculture but inhabited by a people rich in courage, creativity and pioneering spirit. The acidic springs were cleverly used for summer tourism and attracted the rich and aristocratic from all over the world to the Engadin for fashionable spa treatments in the summer. In 1864, the Hotel des Bains, known today as Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, was built for guests of that time and is now built for guests of today.

Once upon a time in St Moritz... as hotel pioneers discovered the appeal of winter sports: sledding, ice skating, curling, bobsleighing and skeleton and knew how to use and develop it into what is now legendary winter tourism. The first electric light in Switzerland (1878), the first tourist association in Switzerland (1864), the first ice skating European championships (1882), the first telephone installation in Graubünden (1889), the first electric tram in the Alps (1896) and the first bobsled track race (1890) are just some of the visionary deeds of those ancient locals.

This list can continue up until today and what this means to me and my team: to delight you, always, with small and large innovations, to sense the right trends and to implement my vision for St. Moritz, the Engadin and the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains all for your to benefit from and experience.

Welcome to your summer adventure

… vor genau 150 Jahren. Ein kleines Bergdorf mit Hanglage, nicht sehr landwirtschaftsfreundlich, aber reich an Mut, Kreativität und Pioniergeist. Die sauren Heilquellen wurden geschickt für den Sommertourismus genutzt und zogen Reiche und Adelige aus aller Welt zu angesagten Badekuren im Sommer ins Engadin. 1864 wird das Hotel des Bains - heute Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains - für die Gäste von damals und heute gebaut.

Es war einmal in St. Moritz… als Hotelpioniere die Strahl-kraft der Wintersportarten: Schlitteln, Eiskunstlaufen, Cur-ling, Bob und Skeleton entdeckten und geschickt für den nun legendären Wintertourismus zu nutzen wussten. Das erste elektrische Licht in der Schweiz (1878), der erste Kur- und Verkehrsverein in der Schweiz (1864), die ersten Eislauf-Europameisterschaften (1882), die erste Telefon-Installation in Graubünden (1889) und erste elektrische Tram der Alpen (1896) oder die erste Bobbahn mit Rennen (1890) ist eine wei- tere Auswahl an visionären Taten der alten „Engadiner“.

Diese Liste lässt sich bis heute fortsetzen und bedeutet für mich und mein Team, Sie immer wieder mit kleinen und grossen Innovationen zu erfreuen, die richtigen Trends zu erspüren und umzusetzen und Sie meine Vision für St. Moritz, das Engadin und das Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains erleben zu lassen.

Once apon a time in St. Moritz…

150 Jahre Hotelgeschichte: vom Hotel des Bains zum Grand Hotel des Bains

Eröffnet würde das Hotel des Bains im Sommer 1864 und bestand aus zwei Stockwerken, noch ohne die beiden Türme. Erste Umbauten 1887 verliehen dem Gebäude einen schlichten nordmediterranen Palaststil. 1905 wurden die markanten Türme im Stil des Neobarock ergänzt, die zunächst als Wäscherei und Unterkunft für Stubenmädchen dienten. Mit dem Einzug der Fahrstühle änderte sich das Wohnverhalten der Gäste – es zog sie in höhere Stockwerke, die um die Jahrhundertwende auf insgesamt fünf aufgestockt wurden. Von 1914 bis 1958 wurde das Hotel geschlossen und nur in den Jahren 1928 und 1948 kurzfristig für die Olympischen Winterspiele geöffnet. Geheizt wurde das Haus in diesen Jahren mit einer modernen Dampfheizung. 1958 wurde das Haus nach zahlreichen Umbauten, mit Flachdecken, moderneren Möbeln und mit neuer Heizung wieder eröffnet.

2002 eröffnete Kempinski nach der 14 Monate umfassenden Renovierung und Modernisierung von Fassade und Interieur das neue Grand Hotel des Bains. Mit Hilfe alter Stiche und Fotos wurde das Gebäude innen und aussen verantwortungsbewusst restauriert. Die jahrzehntelang geschlossene Library ist fast vollständig im Original erhalten. Die Decke erscheint aus Holz, ist aber eine besonders gut erhaltene Biermalerei. Auffallend schöne Wandmalereien sind noch heute im Cà d‘Oro und in der Enoteca zu bewundern, die allein wegen ihrer prachtvollen Wand- und Deckenelemente für eine einmalige Stimmung sorgt.

150 years of hotel history: The Hotel des Bains

The Hotel des Bains opened in 1864. The original building had two storeys and no towers. In 1887, the hotel received its first renovations which give the building a simple north-Mediterranean palace look. In 1905, the two characteristic towers were added, housing a laundry and some space for the parlour maids. With the addition of more elevators in many hotel buildings of the day, the living behavior of hotel guests changed. They preferred higher floors and the building added additional three storeys on top of the original two. The hotel was closed from 1914 until 1958 but was opened briefly in 1928 and 1948 for the Winter Olympics. A steam heater was used to heat the building in those days. In 1958, the building was reopened after extensive renovations and featured floor slabs, modern furniture and a new heating system.

In 2002, after much reconstruction and 14 months of extensive renovation, Kempinski opened the new Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains. The use of old engravings and photographs helped to restore the building’s interior and exterior responsibly. The original library, closed for decades, was almost completely retained. The wooden ceiling is a particularly well-kept example of what is called beer painting. The restoration measures in the Enoteca and in the Gourmet restaurant Cà d’Oro lead to the discovery of several particularly beautiful mural paintings.

Corviglia: Directly opposite Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, the Signalbahn funicular takes you to the ski area of Corviglia. Early risers swear by the “white carpet”, the first ride down the freshly groomed pistes - right in front of you spectacular views and 100-kilometres (62 miles) of World Cup quality runs.

Corvatsch: Step out of the cabin and onto the highest summit station in the Eastern Alps at an altitude of 3,303 metres (10,837 feet). The Corvatsch takes it sporty - even far into spring! Especially when you swoop down the demanding nine-kilometre (5.5 miles) royal descent from Corvatsch via Hahnensee straight to Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains.
