Thompson & Rubenstein
As teachers of mathematics, we sometimes forget that the words and phrases that are familiar to us are foreign to our students. Students need to master this language if they are to read, understand and discuss mathematical ideas.

Vocabulary is Crucial
Learning mathematics is highly dependent on its language and the teaching of math vocabulary is crucial, it is doubly so for ELLs. Thompson & Rubenstein (2000).

Decoding Word Problems
Juan has a large dog and only enough money to purchase 16 meter of heavy-duty material to construct a fence. Juan would like to give his dog the largest area possible with a 16-meter fence.
One possible diagram of the fence is shown below. It has dimensions of 1 meter wide by 7 meters long.
The perimeter of the rectangular fence would be 16 meters and the area would be 7.

Decoding Word Problems
With your shoulder partner work the following word problem. Use the handout that was provided.
Using only whole numbers, determine another six rectangular fences that could be built with a 16-meter perimeter. Draw sketches of the fences and complete the information in the table.

Perimeter
(Perímetro)
4 cm.
2 cm
The perimeter of a shape is the total distance all the way around the outside edge of a 2D shape.
P = 2 l + 2 wP = 2 (4 cm) + 2 (2 cm)P = 8 cm + 4 cmP = 12 cm

(Aria)
4 cm.
2 cm
The area of a polygon/figure is the number of square units inside the polygon/figure. It is the space inside the 2D shape.
A = l x wA = (4 cm) x (2 cm)A = 8 cm²
