mission

visionSt. Andrew’s, an independent college preparatory school dedicated to personalized student development, strives to develop engaged, well-rounded individuals by inspiring a passion for knowledge, a commitment to personal integrity and a deepened social consciousness within a supportive educational community.

TAG LINE Tradition + InnovationA Perfect Balance

St. Andrew’s is an independent International Baccalaureate World School committed to being a leader in 21st Century Teaching and Learning, which includes a curricular focus on creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and character.

This Highlander is dedicated to the Class of 2014. These young men and women have found success at St. Andrew’s, and I am confident are ready to take the next step on their journey.

Our commitment is to help young people find the right college, the right career and hopefully the right life.

The newest St. Andrew’s alums are headed to colleges that span the country from east to west and all points in between. Our graduates have sharpened their critical thinking skills. They are able to apply their acquired knowledge in practical settings. They continue to fine-tune the soft skills necessary to be successful in college and beyond. They are prepared.

Alumni from past years continue to reaffirm the promise of preparedness for college level work. And it is evident when you read through the Alumni News, which includes an update on Christian Howell ’94 who provided this year’s graduation address. Our alums are doing amazing things in college and beyond.

This Highlander also features lots of year-end photos and names of recognition which include academic honors, athletic awards and artistic achievements.

As always, we have given you several Talking Points to share when you are out and about. Turn to page 10 for three short and powerful points of pride. Word-of-mouth and personal testimonies continue to be the best marketing tools

for encouraging others to learn more about St. Andrew’s.

Congratulations to the Class of 2014. We have high expectations and know big things are ahead for these St. Andrew’s alums.

Here’s to a great year,

New to St. Andrew’s this fall, Mr. Tom Forti takes the lead of the Upper School. What happens when you gather nine seniors and a favorite teacher from their past? You get out of the way and let the hugs and memories begin.

These Jo Lamas Legacy recipients have been students at St. Andrew’s since Kindergarten, some even longer. They all have fond memories from the early years when the Lower School was in Bell Hall and Mrs. Lamas was looking out for them.

Beginning in Kindergarten, Lamas taught each of them Spanish. Logan Sims recalls learning the word “butterfly” in Spanish class. Lamas is pleased by the recollection and mentions that “mariposa” is one of her favorite words in Spanish. Then the subject quickly changes to another memory from their Lower School days.

“I remember the time it snowed and Mrs. Gray let us go outside early,” said Deana Dabit.

These nine young men and women, planning to attend college in the fall, have been together for 13 years. They know the good, the bad and the ugly. They tease,

laugh, reminisce and even finish each other’s sentences.

As a group, their pride for the school is transparent. Among them is this year’s STAR student, several accomplished athletes, our Student Council President, a couple of cheerleaders and so much more. As Rachel Smith put it so precisely, “we have deep roots here.” One characteristic that is shared by them all is their involvement at St. Andrew’s and genuine love for the school.

Again, the subject changes. “I remember Mrs. Pizzo playing her guitar in 1st grade,” said Bailey Adams.

This comment encourages Mrs. Lamas to let them in on a little secret. She informs the group that all their former Lower and Middle School teachers have been on this journey with them. “We’ve been watching and following each of you along the way, quietly cheering you on from grade to grade.”

You can feel the pride Lamas has for these students. She gives a few words of wisdom, encouraging them to continuously discover who they are and take responsibility for their future. At 69, Lamas tells the group that she is still discovering herself. She clearly states, “know yourself.”

Another member of the group recalls Mrs. Lee reading books with lots of excitement and suspense…Tuesday was always ice cream day…the Lemonade Sale was the best…Lamas reminds them of their solid beginnings and assures the group of their successes to come.

With so many activities and events on the horizon for these graduates, Lamas knows this short time for reflection may not mean as much to them right now and can’t help but give the group a final homework assignment: “When you are 25, I want each of you to look back and see how well prepared you were for college and beyond.”Lamas is confident that after college and the working world they will even more appreciate the foundation that St. Andrew’s gave them.

LAMAS LEGACIES

It seemed more than appropriate that the group’s time with Jo Lamas just happened to coincide with Senior Pajama Day

LAMAS LEGACIES This distinction recognizes students who have

attended St. Andrew’s since at least Kindergarten

HONOR Roll

The annual Lemonade Sale continues to be an event that seniors mention as one of their best memories from the Lower School. This year did not disappoint. The Class of 2026 squeezed dozens of lemons and raised over $400 with their annual sale. All the proceeds are going to one of our own - James Ferencsik’s ’13 recently formed non-profit Sand for Life

Solutions. See ALUMNI NEWS for more details on James’ organization.

“Our conductor inspired us to play to the best of our abilities. I think we performed some of the best music we’ve ever played before.”Oliver McCammon, 9th grade

“It was awesome! It was a great opportunity for the band to bond.”Lindsey Berkman, 9th grade

“It was surprisingly fun! It made me want to keep playing, and I realized how exciting music can be.” Michael Hall, 11th grade

“The whole experience was fantastic. From the theme parks to the workshop, we had a great time. The students definitely grew closer as an ensemble and improved their musicianship overall.” Kimberly Peterson, Band Director

The St. Andrew’s Wind Ensemble departed for Orlando this past spring to participate in Disney’s “You’re Instrumental” Workshop. The 19 band students spent time enjoying Disney World before heading to the recording studio for their instrumental workshop. Disney Performing Arts had great facilities and an incredibly vibrant teacher to run the

workshop. A recording professional also joined the group, playing back the band’s performance after each take so students could listen to and evaluate their progress. At the end of the session, our students recorded the soundtrack to “Beauty and the Beast” along with the original Disney film animation.

This May, St. Andrew’s School officially retired #24, #31 and #45. If you do the math, that totals 100 which is quite fitting for three young women who always give 100% to everything they do.

It was a rare and exciting opportunity to have all three Wilkowski women on campus with their parents, Dr. Mike and Dr. Deb Wilkowski. We were thrilled to see so many alums, friends, family, past faculty members and former

coaches at the retirement ceremony.

The three sisters were quick to point out that the celebration was about so much more than them. They attributed their successes to all the women who played on the championship teams, the coaches who gave so much, former and current students who never let them down, dedicated teachers and all the parents past and present.
