Although you might think Cambridge is dominated by its thirty-

one colleges with their cobbled courtyards, chapels, gardens,

and bridges, this cosmopolitan city sees the historic and the

contemporary sit side by side. Think of Bridge Street’s Round

Church, the city ’s second oldest building nestling within the city ’s

‘Boutique Quarter,’ or the fascinating technology of the 2008

‘Grasshopper Clock’, which faces King’s Parade.

One of the best ways to discover Cambridge’s sights is to book

a guided walking tour, available daily; or the evening ghost tour

might interest you too. If you prefer being driven, take an open-top

bus tour, or, if you’re feeling a little more energetic, take a punt

down the River Cam.

With so much going on throughout the city, day and night, satisfy

your energy levels this summer with a trip to Cambridge’s newest

fitness class, Zone Outdoor Fitness. Holding classes on the city ’s

busy Jesus Green six days a week, these unique sessions provide a

different way to exercise.

Shoppers amongst you will appreciate how familiar high street

names are complemented by small independent boutiques such as

Boudoir Femme, Oska and Modish. If you’re into markets, make time

for the All Saints Garden Art and Craft Market in Trinity Street, or the

resident market on Market Square.

There’s a fantastic variety of entertainment too. As well as The Arts

Theatre, The ADC and three cinemas, you’ll find live music at the

Corn Exchange, The Junction and a host of smaller venues.

The thriving club scene includes The Place, Fez Club and Lola

Los, or you can choose to chill out at one of the many riverside

pubs. The choice of where to eat clearly indicates the city ’s

cosmopolitan flavour; Chinese, Turkish, Indian, South Asian, Greek

and Italian restaurants sit alongside those offering traditional

English fare, as well as fast food outlets.

If you’re interested in the racing world, visiting Newmarket is a must. Headquarters of the horseracing scene, the town not only boasts two racecourses, the Rowley Mile and the July Racecourse and 2,500 acres of training grounds known as Newmarket Heath, but is also home to The National Horseracing Museum, The Jockey Club Rooms and The National Stud.

Newmarket’s impressive programme of summer events includes The Piper-Heidsieck July Festival, Summer Saturdays and Adnams Newmarket Nights. The Piper-Heidsieck July Festival, runs from 12th – 14th July getting off to a stylish start with the Goldsmiths Ladies Day competition as part of the weekend’s Fashion at the Festival. Summer Saturdays incorporate family entertainment with McFly and Steps set to top the bill this year, while Adnams Newmarket Nights promise prestigious music performances after race meetings. For more details visit www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk.

Set in 500 acres of pastureland on the town’s outskirts, The National Stud safeguards British thoroughbred breeding, and is the only stud in the country open to the public. You can learn about the history of racing at The National Horseracing Museum on Newmarket’s High Street, or experience life in the sacrosanct Jockey Club Rooms, which looks forward to welcoming non-members to raceday picnics in the treasured grounds this year.

Added to this impressive mix is a line up of boutiques, eateries and wellbeing practices. The well-established Liberté Fitness will put you through your paces in tri-weekly classes held on The Severals, or you can treat yourself to a summer makeover at Pride Hair and Beauty on the town’s popular high street.

Find out more about what to see and do in Newmarket at www.newmarketexperience.co.uk. They can arrange itineraries, including racing, to suit you, and will even book your accommodation too.

Bury St Edmunds...33

The market town of Bury St Edmunds combines the historical, as its

rich and varied architectural heritage shows, with the contemporary,

evidenced by the favoured arc shopping centre. Add a thriving

award-winning market and wide selection of boutiques, and you

have the unique place that is Bury.

But that’s not all that makes Bury unique; it ’s home to Suffolk’s only

cathedral, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, set in the picturesque

Abbey Gardens, and its recently refurbished Theatre Royal is the

only surviving Regency Theatre in the country.

The foodies amongst you might appreciate that there has been a

brewery on the present site of Greene King’s Brewery since 1700;

here you can not only visit a museum, but can also enjoy food

and drink fairs. With its wide choice of restaurants and eateries,

from Harriet’s Tearoom where time seems to stand still, to the quaint

Nutshell pub, reputedly the smallest in Britain, Bury has something

for everyone.

In the town’s shopping streets, alongside more familiar names, you

can find exclusive shops such as Javelin, Nicola Sexton and Six

Whiting Street. arc shopping centre, with its flagship Debenhams

store, provides yet more retail opportunities; prepare to be enticed

by Hobbs and Swarovksi, amongst others!

arc is also home to The apex, the fabulous music, entertainment,

conference and community venue, which offers a varied

programme of events.

If you’re looking for a quintessentially English market town with typically English events this Jubilee year, then visit Saffron Walden. A well-preserved medieval market town, built around a now ruined castle, Saffron Walden has over four hundred buildings of special architectural or historic interest, and was designated a Conservation Area in 1968.

You’ll be enchanted by its medieval chopping streets and distinctive pargeting of its timber-framed buildings. Here you can find a mix of specialist fashion boutiques for men, women and children, accessories at the town’s popular store The Corner Cupboard and food stores.

Whether your taste is for Thai, traditional English, Italian or Indian, Saffron Walden also has an excellent selection of restaurants, and an impressive number of small, tasteful coffee shops.

With many events happening throughout the summer, such as the Saffron Walden Arts Festival from 7th – 11th June, and the Thaxted Festival from 22nd June – 15th July, which features an impressive Morris Patronal Display, in and around Saffron Walden there’s something for all.

Add to this the August programme of English Heritage picnic concerts at nearby Audley End, a monastery given by Henry VIII to Sir Thomas Audley in 1538, and you have a varied programme of events to suit an English summer.

Nestling in the Fen countryside is the picturesque city of Ely with its magnificent cathedral, tranquil close, gardens, bustling waterside and marina. In the waterside area in particular, more modern developments such as the Maltings, which has a lively programme of events, blend in with the older buildings to give this attractive city a particular character of its own.

Affectionately known as ‘the ship of the fens’, Ely Cathedral’s present appearance dates from the eleventh century. If you’re brave enough, take the guided tour and climb the 165 steps of its distinctive Octagon tower, a masterpiece of medieval engineering. Another option is to visit the cathedral’s stained glass museum, the only one in the entire country.

Oliver Cromwell was a famous inhabitant of Ely and his house, the only surviving Cromwell residence apart from Hampton Court, has been recreated as it would have been in his time, making it well worth a visit... and watch out for the ghosts! The surrounding area also has its ghosts, the most notorious being the phantom dog ‘Black Shuck’, which is supposed to haunt the road between Ely and Cambridge.

After you’ve checked out Ely ’s history, why not treat yourself to a little smackerel of something in one of the city ’s restaurants or pubs; you’ll find a good selection around the cathedral and along the waterfront, particularly at The Cutter Inn.

For shoppers, there’s a good selection of well-known retailers and independent boutiques offering everything from interiors to fashion and much more. Browse the extensive collection of gift shops and accessories available on the city ’s popular shopping street, Fore Hill, or relax in one of the characteristic cafés and tearooms lining the cobbled streets.
