1 Pick a good timefor your child
to work on theactivities. Youmay want to doit around mid-morning after play,or early afternoon
when your child is not too tired.
2 Make sure your child hasall the supplies he or she
needs, such as pencils andcrayons. Set aside a specialplace for your child to work.
3 At the beginningof each week,
discuss with yourchild how manyminutes a day he orshe would like toread. Write the goalat the top of theincentive chart forthe week. (We recommend reading 15 to20 minutes a day with your child who isentering 2nd grade.)
4 Reward your child’s efforts with the small stickers
at the end of each day. As anadded bonus, let your him orher affix a large sticker at the
bottom of the incentive chartfor completing the activitieseach week.
5 Encourage your child
to complete the worksheet, butdon’t force theissue. While youmay want toensure that yourchild succeeds, it’salso important that your childmaintain a positive and relaxed attitudetoward school and learning.
6 After you’ve given yourchild a few minutes
to look over the practicepages he or she will be
working on, ask your childto tell you his or her plan
of action: “Tell me about what we’re doing
on these pages.” Hearing the explanationaloud can provide you with insights into your child’s thinking processes. Can heor she complete the work independently?
With guidance? If your child needssupport, try offering a choice about whichfamily member might help. Giving yourchild a choice can help boost confidenceand help him or her feel more ownershipof the work to be done.
7 When your childhas finished the
workbook, presenthim or her withthe certificate ofcompletion on page 143. Feel free to frameor laminate the certificate and display iton the wall for everyone to see. Your child
will be so proud!

The following activities are designed tocomplement the ten weeks of practicepages in this book. These activitiesdon’t take more than a few minutes tocomplete and are just a handful of waysin which you can enrich and enliven yourchild’s learning. Use the activities to takeadvantage of the time you might ordinarilydisregard—for example, standing in line or
waiting at a bus stop. You’ll be working topractice key skills and have fun togetherat the same time.
Finding Real-Life ConnectionsOne of the reasons for schooling is tohelp children function out in the real
world, to empower them with the abilitiesthey’ll truly need. So
why not put those
developing skills intoaction by enlisting
your child’s help withcreating a grocerylist, reading streetsigns, sorting pocketchange, and so on?He or she can applyreading, writing, science, and math
skills in important and practical ways, connecting what he or she is learning witheveryday tasks.
An Eye for Patterns A red-brick sidewalk, a beaded necklace,a Sunday newspaper—all show evidenceof structure and organization. You canhelp your child recognize something’sstructure or organization by observingand talking about patterns they see. Yourchild will apply his or her developingability to spot patterns across all school
subject areas, including alphabet letterformation (writing), attributes of shapesand solids (geometry), and characteristicsof narrative stories (reading). Being ableto notice patterns is a skill shared byeffective readers and writers, scientists, and mathematicians.

Journals as Learning ToolsMost of us associate journal writing withreading comprehension, but having yourchild keep a journal can help you keepup with his or her developing skills inother academic areas as well—from tellingtime to matching rhymes. To get started, provide your child with several sheets ofpaper, folded in half, and stapled together.
Explain that he or she will be writing and/or drawing in the journal to complementthe practice pages completed each week.Encourage your child to draw or writeabout what he or she found easy, what
was difficult, or what was fun. Beforemoving on to another set of practice pages, take a few minutes to read and discussthat week’s journal entries together.
PromoteReading at Home◆ Let your child catch you
in the act of reading forpleasure, whether you likereading science fictionnovels or do-it-yourselfmagazines. Store them someplace
that encourages you to read in frontof your child and demonstrate thatreading is an activity you enjoy .For example, locate your readingmaterials on the coffee table insteadof your nightstand.
◆ Set aside a family reading time. Bydesignating a reading time eachweek, your family is assured anopportunity to discuss with each other
what you’re reading. You can, forexample, share a funny quote froman article. Or your child can tell youhis or her favorite part of a story. Thekey is to make a family tradition ofreading and sharing books of all kindstogether.
◆ Put together collections of readingmaterials your child can accesseasily. Gather them in baskets or
bins that you can place in the familyroom, the car, and your child’sbedroom. You can refresh your child’slibrary by borrowing materials fromyour community’s library, buyingused books, or swapping books andmagazines with friends and neighbors.

story are connected and makes the story easier to understand.Last summer, Dad, Mom, Tim, and Tara went

She spread a blanket on the sandand set out ham sandwiches, potato chips, apples, and cookies. She brought lemonade in the cooler. Later, Tim andTara walked along the beach and saw a crab walking sideways. A stray
dog was barking at it. A starfish had washed up on the beach, too. Timthrew bread crumbs up in the air to feed a flock of seagulls. Then thefamily went back to the hotel, and Tim and Tara played video gamesuntil bedtime.

A character is a person or animal in a story. To understand a character better, you should pay attention to the details a story often gives about the character.
Some kids are scared to go to the dentist, but not me. I have a funnydentist. His name is Dr. Smileyface. I don’t think that’s his real name, butthat’s what he tells all the kids who come to see him. He has a cool waitingroom. It has video games and a big toy box. Dr. Smileyface always wearsfunny hats. Sometimes he has his face painted. He asks funny questions like“Are you married yet?” and “Do you eat flowers to make your breath smellso sweet?” That makes me laugh. One time, he told me this joke, “What haslots of teeth but never goes to the dentist? A comb!” When I laughed, hepulled my tooth. It didn’t hurt at all! He also teaches me how to take careof my teeth because he says he doesn’t want me to get a cavity the sizeof the Grand Canyon. Before I go home, he always gives me a surprise.Last time I went, he gave me a rubber spider to scare my mom with!

Week 9 • Day 5Cause and Effect
An American VolcanoMount Saint Helens is an active volcano in the state of Washington. In
1980, this volcano erupted, spewing hot lava into the air. Explosions causeda huge cloud of dust. This gray dust flled the air and settled on houses andcars many miles away. The thick dust made it hard for people and animalsto breathe. The explosions flattened trees on the side of the mountain. Thehot rocks caused forest fires. The snow that was on the mountain meltedquickly, causing floods and mud slides. Mount Saint Helens still erupts fromtime to time but not as badly as it did in 1980.
