summertime is perfect for students of all levels to try new instruments, experiment musically, take daily group lessons, and perform every week. Our programs focus on classical music training and performance, and also offer exciting opportunities to explore jazz, popular music, and musical theater. For young children, the Summer Arts Program is a superb way to try out instrumental and vocal music making – possibly for the first time – and to
discover their particular passion. Students make great progress and form lasting friendships.
Students choose programs tailored to their individual needs and interests. Classes, workshops, and performance opportunities include instrumental and vocal workshops, instrumental classes, chamber music ensembles paired with music technology to create exciting virtual performances, musical theater, jazz, and popular music. An exciting Composing and Arranging program gives students a chance to try their hands at the creative process of composition using state-of-the-art software and applications.

Small Group Instruction (E, UE, JR, HS)Learn to play a new instrument or sing! Or, join a mixed ensemble that will learn music to record as part of the Music Technology – Virtual Performance Creation class.
Available groups include: Vocal Technique Class; Piano for Non-Pianists; Guitar/Bass/Ukulele; Cello; Woodwinds; Violin/Viola; Mixed Ensembles (paired w/ Music Technology - Virtual Performance Creation); (JR, HS); and Drama Workshop (E, UE).

Private Lesson Instruction (E, UE, JR, HS)Multiple weekly lessons available with your instructor at HBMS. Scheduling is by arrangement. Lessons offered at a 10% discount schedule private lessons.
Practice Partner Lesson (E, UE, JR, HS)Schedule practice sessions with an HBMS Summer Intern – high school or college student – who will help your child get the most of her/his home practice time. Practice Partners work in partnership with private instructors to support lesson instruction.
MUSICIANSHIP Music Theory (sections available for E, UE and JR, HS)Royal Conservatory Music Program based curriculum supported by U-Theory and other online resource for classroom and home use.
Jazz and Popular Music Theory (beginning and intermediate/advanced sections available for JR, HS)Music theory concepts preparing students to understand and put to use musical concepts necessary for playing and improvising jazz and popular music.
Music AppreciationA listening lounge designed to expand the students’ understanding of a composer’s life and times. An earful of music, a glimpse of art history, and a look at the social setting of the times.

PERFORMANCE OFFERINGS All participants must supply their own instruments for home use.
Instrumental Workshops (E, UE, JR, HS)A workshop for students playing their primary instrument. Groups work on technique, tone production, practice strategies, single-instrument group repertoire, and allow for individuals to perform and receive feedback. Available groups include: Upper strings, Lower strings; Suzuki strings (upper); Suzuki strings (lower); Creative Keyboard; Brass; Woodwinds; and Percussion.
COMPOSITION AND IMPROvISATIONComposition and Arranging with Technology (JR, HS)Teaches participants the skills needed to use hardware, software, and app technology in support of their own creative compositional process. Skills students learn and experience include publishing standard computer notated scores; using MIDI files with software samples; and creating digital audio recordings. Emphasis is placed on putting technology in service of personal creativity. Student compositions will be shared when ready during recitals. Appropriate for students new to the use of music technology. Theory background and placement meeting required.
Jazz and Popular Music Improvisation Workshop (JR, HS)Coaching for small groups of instrumentalists learning improvisational techniques central to jazz and popular music.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGyMusic Technology classes teach students to understand how to put technology to effective and creative use.
virtual Performance Creation (JR, HS)Offers students the opportunity to experience the entire process of creating a virtual performance. Each student will work with an ensemble to create individual recordings. Using Reaper and Adobe Premiere, the recordings will be edited for audio and video separately and then combined into a finalized project. The class is designed to include opportunities for students to share their projects, share feedback, and to develop participants’ ability to navigate the challenges and opportunities of learning and creating with software. Students must participate in an Mixed Ensemble that will record parts to create a recording.
Music Software Workshop (UE, JR, HS)Teaches students how to use software to notate and play back musical scores.
The Lion King ExperienceAn immersive, project-based exploration of theater-making. Prides (classes) explore each day’s theme through backstage access, on-screen instruction and teacher-facilitated full class activities. Student work together to solve creative challenges.

•Script Analysis (weeks 1, 3) Plot analysis, text (and sub-text analysis), character analysis, understanding the historical/cultural setting, learning to understand the writer’s intention in order to keep the actor (singer) on track with the writer’s intentions.
•virtual Cabaret (weeks 2, 4, 5) A fun-filled way to work on acting the song! Students will each work on a solo from the musical theatre canon in order to enhance their performance skills. The workshop concludes with a cabaret-style performance for family and friends.
•Broadway Connections, guest artist series (JR, HS) A special event for musical theater students to meet and speak with artists who have been on Broadway.

Students must have their own device suitable for online instruction and provide their own instruments for home use.

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required at the time of registration. The balance of tuition is due by June 29, 2020. Once you have registered, we will contact you to schedule a placement meeting with the Director in order to tailor the best possible program for your child.
Private lesson instruction is available at a special rate for students enrolled in the Summer Arts Program. All students are encouraged to add private instruction to their weekly schedule.
Take your home practice to the next level with a Hoff-Barthelson Practice Partner!Practice partners are high school or college students (HB alumni) who will practice with your child (online) at home. Practice Partner sessions are 30 or 45 minutes in duration and are available only to students taking private lessons at Hoff-Barthelson. They may be booked as part of the private lesson-scheduling process.
