Washington & Jefferson College, SOMAS Neuroscience Research The Support of Mentors and Students in Neuroscience (SOMAS) Program provides an opportunity for one student to spend 10 weeks during Summer 2005 pursuing neuroscience research with Dr. Ronald Bayline. The research will involve studying regulation of muscle development during metamorphosis in the moth, Manduca sexta. Individuals Affiliated with W&J who may host W&J students

The following individuals are willing to work with a W&J student during the summer and/or intersession. The exact nature of the internship varies with the individual. Only highly motivated students with good academic records should apply. Students must seek financial support through the host institution, ASM, NSF, NIH, etc. Students should begin investigating possibilities as early as possible.

Application: 1) Identify individuals with whom you would be interested in working. 2) Contact the researchers to determine whether they will have space and a project available in their laboratory when you wish to do an internship. 3) Read the literature to familiarize yourself with the individual's research. 4) Discuss your plans with your advisor. 5) Write a letter expressing your interest, past experience, career goals, etc. 6) Be sure to conform to any official application procedure. 7) Check with Dr. Lee for any specific information concerning internships.

Diane L. Carlisle, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, Hillman Cancer Center, Pittsburgh, PA 15261. Dr. Carlisle is a W&J grad whose laboratory studies the causes, progression, and treatment of lung cancer. Projects focus on signaling pathways in lung cells that are triggered by nicotine, including characterizing the nicotine receptors on lung cells and investigating the events downstream of receptor binding, including calcium release and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway activation. Gary Silverman, M.D., Ph.D. chief, Division of Neonatology and Developmental Biology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and chief of neonatology at Magee-Womens Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dennis J. Slamon M.D., Ph.D. Division of Hematology/Oncology, Jonsson Comphrehensive Cancer Center, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Dr. Slamon is a W&J alumnus and developer of the breast cancer drug Herceptin, an antibody to an erb B growth factor receptor. Richard Somiari, Ph.D. Windber Research Institute, Windber, PA 15963. “WRI collects, classifies and stores biological samples, and processes and analyzes them at the cellular and molecular level to identify DNA, RNA and proteins that are dysfunctional or inappropriately expressed. Advanced computational, biological and bioimaging techniques are utilized to determine how genes and proteins affect disease development and progression. The information is utilized in disease management and also for development of new drugs and vaccines.” Specific programs include: tissue banking; bioimaging, microscopy and cellular informatics; high throughput analysis of gene and protein expression; mass spectrometry analysis of biomolecules; and bioinformatics. Role of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (cAMP/PKA) in neuronal process formation and association of the Amyloid Pecursor Protein (APP) with the neuronal cytoskeleton in Alzheimer’s disease. Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium Internship Programs Internship opportunities in animal husbandry, horticulture, and conservation education.
