As I indicated at the annual meet- ing, every expert agrees that the pandemic’s first wave has not yet ended. erefore, Temple Beth Or has decided to keep our building closed for worship experiences, in- cluding the High Holy Days for the beginning of the 5781 year. Later fall plans for in-person Shabbat wor- ship and Temple engagement will be re-evaluated based on the pandem- ic’s shiſting nature. Meanwhile, Rabbi Azriel and I have found creative ways of gather- ing in our parking lot for innovative, safe in-person celebrations together. But we will also create online op- tions for those who need or prefer to experience the High Holy Days in their own homes. Of course, this difficult decision means that High Holy Day wor- ship will feel different than anything we’ve ever done. Nevertheless, we are committed to providing creative, deeply spiritual, and meaningful al- ternatives to our traditional sanctu- ary services. Or’s clergy, staff, and board have been vigilant about upholding our community’s highest priori-ties of sustaining life and health during the current

We thank you for continuing to support our Temple family with your time, energy, re-sources, and efforts to keep yourself a part of our community even while we need to remain apart.

The Hank Adler Senior Connections Temple Beth Or, a congregation built by a small dedicated community, for the community. All inclusive, Temple Beth Or provides a safe, welcoming space for all. From the tiniest of ba-bies, to the well respected elders of our congregation, Temple Beth Or has proven to be a true protector and nurturing entity to everyone. Our Rabbis and leaders are commit-ted to each and every member, equally. Like the rest of the world, too often, the members of any community, the people who made it possible, the founders of our organizations, are forgot-ten...not here. One of our founding members, Hank Adler (z’l) recognized the all-too-often trend in our congregation and said, not on my watch. Hank led the initiative to establish Temple Beth Or’s Senior Connections project to ensure that those who made it possible were not just an after-thought, but a vitally important aspect. These are the people whose insight, dedication and hard work created the foundation for the community the rest of us rely upon and cherish. Hank made sure that this population was in the foreground of people’s minds when creating programming. He wanted to ensure that content was not only inclusive, but accessible. Whether it was a phone call to just check in, the arrangement of a ride to services or a multitude of other needs, Hank made sure that our seniors were taken care of. As we mourn his recent passing, we shall memorialize and honor his com-mitment, his dedication, and all his hard work by renaming the senior pro-gram he established. From this point forward, The Temple Beth Or Senior Connections pro-gram shall be titled “The Hank Adler Senior Connections.” A small gesture on behalf of a man who gave so much. His memory will be for a blessing, just as his actions were and will contin-ue to be a blessing for those in need. Thank you, Hank. You led us down a path that we promise to navigate in the direction that you mapped out for us. We are looking for volunteers to join our Senior Connection team to help with planning going forward. Contact Bill Fried at 937-545-9744.

My name is Marc Siegel, Temple Beth Or’s Treasurer. I am excited to take over the role this year. Along with my wife Carrie and daughter Olivia we have been members here at Temple Beth Or for three years. We are excited about the opportunities and Jewish Community we have found here. Now more than ever it is important to recognize and support the parts of our com-munity that are integral parts of our life. Therefore, I would like to remind everyone how you can help support Temple Beth Or.

Member SupportTemple Beth Or runs off Member support. Each year we ask our members to make a commitment based on your comfort level. While we have recommended levels of support, we encourage everyone to support Temple at a level that is comfortable for you. Member support forms for 2020-2021 were mailed in August. This mailing contained member support informa-tion, answers to frequently asked questions, and your member commitment form. Completing and returning these forms helps us to be able to plan and continue to provide the innovative pro-gramming at Temple Beth Or.

ShopDid you know you can support Temple by shopping at your favorite stores? Amazon Smile, Kroger and Dorothy Lane Market. Select Temple Beth Or as your charitable organization and provide support while you shop. See tem-plebethor.com/support/ for additional details.

FundraisingTemple Beth Or’s fundraisers are being reimagined for this year to ensure safe experiences. Please keep an eye out for updates for the Artisan Fair/Brisket Lunch, Corned Beef Sale and Party Time events as we move through the year. If you have new ideas or want to help, we would love to hear from you.

Join InMost of all we want our members to feel welcome. We do not want financial challenges to stop you from attending Temple functions and being a part our Community. Some Giving Strategies Can Save Tax LiabilityGiving to Temple Beth Or reaps

many benefits, including potential tax savings for the giver.

Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) are a unique tax strategy that allows individuals who are at least 70 ½ and have traditional or inherited IRAs to distribute up to

$100,000 per year directly from their IRA to Temple Beth Or with no fed-eral income tax consequences.

QCDs are not included in your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) so using this strategy can lower your income and may decrease the tax you pay on your Social Security in-

come. The process is easy. The financial

institution holding your IRA just makes the check payable directly to Temple Beth Or.

If you have questions contact your financial advisor or call the office at 937-435-3400.

2020-21 Member Support Forms It is time again for you to submit your Member Support Commitment Form. Member support forms for 2020-2021 were mailed at the beginning of August. The mailing contained member support information, answers to frequently asked questions, and your member commitment form. Please complete the form and mail it back as soon as possible. If you did not received the mailing, please call the office to get one. Thank you! Questions? Email [email protected]

Presidents’ Message Temple Beth Or is embarking on its 36th Year! Unfortunately, we are celebrating double-Chai in a pandemic. So, time to rethink our incredible Rosh Hashanah oneg (sorry, Karen Granby), Rabbi Chessin’s High Holy Day surprises, our in-person Makor experience, a founding families gathering, a Temple-wide gala, Party Times and other events. But no worries! Temple Beth Or is doing what it does best: providing a warm, welcoming home for our Tem-ple community … and we are doing so in innovative ways. We have posted continuous “Daily Connection” posts on FaceBook, 135 of them as of August 20 and counting! Thanks to our rabbis and lay leaders, we’ve provided virtual weekly Friday night services; some of our long-time members who moved away have come to join us. Rabbi Azriel and the Education Committee have revamped Makor to provide a blended online ed-ucation model with opportunities for in-person, parking, and socially-distanced family education programs. Rabbi Chessin and Rabbi Azriel are working tirelessly to provide a unique and satisfying High Holiday experi-ence. Other annual events and 36th year celebratory events may look a little different this year, but we’ll strive to make them as meaningful. We may not be physically together, but Temple Beth Or is here for you. We look forward to an interesting and unforgettable year -- and celebrating life (twice over) -- with you! L’Shanah Tovah!

I am so excited to be joining the amazing family and community that is Temple Beth Or. The Makor program is an amazing source of Jewish education and

inspiration, and I am overjoyed to be-gin working with all the teachers and students in the program. Being offered the opportunity to continue building upon that passion at Temple Beth Or was and continues to be a true joy. In early June, the Education Com-mittee and I began discussing every contingency in order to bring Makor to your homes safely and without sac-rificing educational quality. We start-ed the planning process by ensuring we would still be able to have synchro-nous learning with live interactions between students and teachers. It has become more and more apparent that in-person classes, taking place as they have in past years, are not in the best interest of the health of our students, teachers, parents and stakeholders of the school. For that reason, we are announcing that Makor will continue in a blended online education mod-el with opportunities for in-person, parking lot, family education pro-grams, which will take place outside in a socially distanced fashion. Our first day of Makor is September 13, 2020. It was initially planned for August 23rd, but in order to give fami-lies more time to accommodate online education and your day-school sched-ules, we have decided to delay the opening. On September 13th, we will have our first parking-lot program to kick off the High Holiday season. This exciting program will be filled with safe family activities, Tikkun Olam opportunities, live (distanced) music, and opportunities to fill out Makor registration forms (if not already done so) starting at 10:00am. In addition to transitioning to online

educational opportunities, we have decided to change how we deliver classes to capitalize on shorter expe-riences online. We are so excited that we will be instituting a “big-school” model, which will begin every Sunday session with a short 20-minute lesson created by Rabbis Chessin and Azri-el. Following this tv-show style lesson, all students will break out into smaller age groups and have short social/reli-gious/musical experiences led by one of our amazing teachers. The schedule will be:

• 10:00-10:20 All school program with Rabbis Chessin and Azriel (all ages)

• 10:20-10:25 Transition to break-out Zoom rooms

• 10:25-10:40 Class & Music for Pre-K to 2nd grade

• 10:25-10:50 Class for 3rd-5th grade

• 10:25-11:00 Class for 6th grade and up

For students 2nd grade and below the entire Sunday School online ex-perience will be less than 40 minutes, for 3rd through 5th grade, our school time will not exceed 50 minutes and all older students will be in class for no more than an hour. Our online ses-sions will begin at 10am and will start on October 11th. As a part of our educational model this year, Temple Beth Or wants to en-sure families’ abilities to take part in Jewish education on their own sched-ule. All families registered for Makor will be given access to an online educa-tion platform with hundreds of games, stories and activities for kids to watch and play on any device. This program should be a priceless resource for en-gaging students throughout the year when we cannot be in person. Finally, our Hebrew program will undergo a change of its own. All He-brew students will be offered 30-min-ute one-on-one lessons once a week. These lessons should provide ample opportunity to learn, maintain and ad-vance Hebrew skills. After registering,

we will work together to determine a suitable time for both your family and our Hebrew tutors. Through the use of textbooks and online Hebrew plat-forms, we are striving to bring Hebrew alive and teach it just as well as we can in person. In addition to the one-on-one lessons, students will have the op-portunity to practice skills online on multiple game and educational plat-forms which tutors can monitor. The Education Committee and Board of Temple Beth Or recognize that our change in education comes with a need to consider the financial model and registration fees. Even though our expenses remain very similar, we have decided to reduce the registration fees for Makor this year. We have also cho-sen to charge per semester as we may have the ability to change our model in the spring, should it be safe to do so. The registration fee schedule is as follows:

• Students in Hebrew education - $250 per semester

• Non-Hebrew Students - $100 per semester

These fees will include access to all our online platforms, parking-lot family education experiences, and on-line live teaching on Sunday morning. Please note, we value education over any fee charged -- if the registration fee is burdensome to you and your fami-ly during at this time, we are happy to work out a plan or look at scholarship opportunities for your student(s). In addition, if you are in a place to sup-port the congregation over and above the new registration fee, your support does not go unnoticed. I want to thank you for your time and continued dedication and interest in Makor and bringing Jewish educa-tion alive. Our registration is live and can be found at www.tinyurl.com/Ma-korReg. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or con-cerns.

B’bracha (with blessings) Rabbi Benjamin G. Azriel

Cur-rently, we are studying the books of Chronicles, the final books of the Hebrew Scriptures. This will wrap up our decades long verse by verse study of the Hebrew Bible. If you were there at the beginning, you may want to call into Zoom to hear the exciting conclusion of our holi-est of books. Look for links in the weekly Plan-It Beth Or.

Chai Mitzvah Begins September 3rd on Zoom Temple Beth Or is pleased to offer and help underwrite a third Chai Mitzvah course. Chai Mitzvah is a Jewish engagement program designed to help people grow their Judaism through text study and social action. This year’s course explores “how each commandment provides us with beliefs, principles, and standards of behavior which can guide and chal-lenge our identity and behavior.” Chai Mitzvah class meetings are facilitated by enrollees on a rotating basis. Learning materials are provided via source books designed to develop a framework for meaningful discussion and personal growth. Dates: First Thursday of each month, beginning September 3rd, 7:00 p.m. on Zoom Cost: $40 (printed materials) or $18 (PDF materials) Questions: Contact Jan Maharam at 937-361-8157

“Prosecuting Evil” September 8th “Prosecuting Evil” tells the gripping story of the young lead prosecutor, Ben Ferencz, at the Nuremberg trials, who said, ”. . . the only way we can stop injustice in the world is with justice.” Ferencz’ lifelong desire for justice is seen by many as altering the rule of law. The Adult Education Committee (AEC) of Temple Beth Or and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton are pleased to invite you to join your fellow Temple Beth Or con-gregants and worshipers from Congregation Anshai Emeth in Peoria, IL for a ZOOM interactive discussion about the film, “Prosecuting Evil” on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. Register at https://templebethor.com/upcoming-adult-education-events/ by September 6th and you will be sent the link to see the film at no cost, through the generosity of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Dayton. A huge thank you to Jane Hochstein! You will be able to view the film between the dates of Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 8. You will also receive a few potential discussion questions to promote re-flection. You are encouraged to bring your own ideas and questions to add to our discussion. Marcy L. Paul and Ruth Schumacher will facilitate and look forward to welcoming you to the conversation on September 8th, 2020.
