Happy New Year from o2bhealthy!

Caring for you, naturally!

I wish the very best of Christ-mas cheer to all Waimea Weekly readers. It has been an interesting year with a horrible start for many people having their holiday plans destroyed by the rain event. This Christmas period will be different though and we have so much to see and do. Wheth-er it is the majesty of Harwoods Hole, the dancing sands of Te Waikoropupu Springs, wild and windy Wha-rariki Beach, Farewell Spit, the golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park, the alpine expe-rience at Nelson Lakes, or the trip across the hill to Golden Bay, the variety is endless and we are only scratching the sur-

face of what is on offer. As a keen mountain biker I will certainly be taking in the opportunities the Tasman Great Taste Trail has to of-fer. Over the last year a great

deal of work has gone into the construction of trails and bridges from Richmond to Mapua and Richmond to Wakefield enabling safe cycling. After a day of enjoying the wonders nature has provided, there are

any number of festivals and events happening over this period for all the family and friends. We live in one of the best places in the world. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it with family and friends.

A message from your mayor

Richard Kempthorne.

It’s a great time of year to be here in Nelson spending quality time with friends and family. Something I certainly look forward to doing as I am sure most of you will.Unfortunately, it is also a time when calls for service to police, ambulance and fire increase due to traffic crash-es or incidents in-volving injury from disorder and as-saults. It does not need an in depth analysis to realise that a lot of these calls for service are fuelled by the over consumption of alco-hol and drugs. Each year, police, medical staff and

public safety officials call for moderation when peo-ple are celebrating these festive occasions.Recently there has been a concerted effort by police, the local authority and oth-

er partners to make our inner city safer for lawful users of the area.It is important that if you intend to go into the CBD area with the intention of consuming al-

cohol you know the area covered by the liquor ban and what obligations and requirements are outlined in this bylaw. Please have a safe and enjoyable break this summer.

Message from Nelson police

Sergeant Mal Drummond.

Erica Gibson, Richmond.

“I’ll be going camping after work with my husband. We’ll probably have a quiet night.”

Chase Harrison, Richmond.

“Me and the girlfriend are go-ing up to the Happy Festival at Wairoa Gorge, it should be a bit of fun.”

Garry Grant, Spring Grove.

“I’ve got no idea. Probably have a BBQ at home with a few mates and the family.”

Natasha Dunn, Richmond.

“I’m not sure where yet, but I’m going to have a few drinks and go camping with some friends.”

What are you going to get up to this New Year’s Eve?

Happy Holidays from

Tasman District Council

Council Service Centre holiday hoursTasman District Council’s Office and Service Centres in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Murchison are closed over the Christmas and New Year period, but the 24-hour assistance hotline is always available.

Richmond, Takaka and Motueka are closed from 3.00 pm on Monday 24 December 2012 and will reopen at 8.00 am on Thursday 3 January 2013.

Murchison is closed on Monday 31 December 2012 and will reopen on Thursday 3 January 2013.

Council’s 24-hour assistance service operates at all times over the Christmas/New Year break. Just phone your local Council Service Centre.

Libraries in Richmond, Motueka, Murchison and Takaka are closed on Tuesday 1 January 2013 and Wednesday 2 January 2013.

Fiona Newey of the Nelson Tasman Cy-cles Trails Trust is expecting seven out of ten visitors to bring their bikes and venture onto the trail at some point. Thanks to sig-nificant government and council funding and hundreds of volunteer hours, stage one was opened last month. “We’ve just pub-lished our map brochure which is being distributed around the country, 30,000 of them. So we’re hoping people pick those up and want to come to Nelson and do this,” she says. “We’ve got about 116km of trail now open off road.”The idea to construct a cycle trail through

the entire Tasman District was first thought of after two cyclists visited the Otago Rail Trail. “They looked at a number of options, talking to Marlborough, Murchison, Gold-en Bay and everywhere in between. In 2009 the Government decided that if you had a cycle trail similar to the Otago one, it could emulate its success and create employment in regions that perhaps wouldn’t have had that opportunity.”Fiona says without the support of the vol-unteers this project would never have hap-pened, a statement epitomised by the hun-dreds of community group volunteers that constructed a board walk behind Lower Queen St in just one day. “There’s a lot of

very stressed people that deserve a holiday and that includes the engi-neers and all of the contractors too. It’s just been massive.”

• The official starting point for the Great Taste Cycle Trail is at the i-Site on the corner of Trafalgar and Halifax St in Nelson. The ride to Mapua is expected to take two and a half hours via Richmond and Rabbit Island, while the journey to Wake-field should take approximately 90 minutes.

The largest classic motorcycle club in the country will be holding its annual showcase on January 5 and 6 at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Each year the Nelson Classic & Vintage Mo-torcycle Club puts on a display of motorcycles all owned by current members. Club rules restrict the machines to more than 25 years old, from all continents and from all famous manufactures.Club member Steve White says there are ap-proximately 180 members in the club and a lot of them still ride the same motorcycles as they did in their 20s. The display is held each year because it is a good chance to get all of the members together at once. This year’s show will be setup to help visitors source classic motorcycles, as it usually brings in more members. Club member Richard

Powley says it will be more of a “workshop” this year. “A lot of our members work in the motorcycle industry so we’re going to have stands showing what they do,” says Richard. “We’re going to have people selling parts and panel beaters, showing what the club does.” On Sunday there will be a swap-meet at the site from 9am to 12noon and anyone who wishes to sell motorcycle related material from bikes, clothing, books, parts are welcome.Doors open at 9am on both days and tickets for the event cost $5 for adults while children are free. For further information email [email protected].

Classics go on show

A retired Richmond couple have walked away with $5000 in their pockets after win-ning the sixth annual Shop ‘n’ Win competi-tion.Tony and Doreen Connelly won after their entry was drawn out of an incredible 67,000 that were submitted to the competition, which runs in retail stores around Rich-mond in the lead up to Christmas. This year the number of entries soared well above any previous years that the Waimea Weekly pro-motion has run.Tony’s winning entry was filled out at Rae-ward Fresh and he says he was shocked and “very pleased” to win. After relocating

to Nelson last year after the Christchurch earthquake to Stillwater Gardens Retire-ment Village the couple were excited to have won the competition out of the blue. “We had no money when we came here and we didn’t know what to do or where to go. We are always in Raeward Fresh so to win this is a nice surprise.”Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler says he was extremely pleased that the Shop ‘n Win prize had gone to one of his customers. Jus-tin won $2000 as part of the promotion and says he will be spending it on his staff. “I will absolutely be putting on a special Christmas shout for the team.”

Winners of the Shop ‘n’ Win competition and $5000 cash are Tony and Doreen Connelly, centre, with from left; Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler, store man-ager Janice Jennens and Waimea Weekly’s Sue Davies. Photo: Steve Page.

Tens of thousands of people will load the boot up and descend on Kaiteriteri beach this summer with families from all around New Zealand due to arrive on Boxing Day to enjoy the Christmas and New Year’s break. If you’re local or just visiting, you might want to head over and check out the festivities on offer at one of our region’s favourite beaches. Rob Guild the current Kaiteriteri campground and re-serve manager says the bay is gearing up for a summer of fun and the local campgrounds and motor camp is fully booked out until the end of January. With a golden beach,

stunning views and nearby native bush tracks, Rob says the opportunities are endless in the bay that so many flock to on their summer holidays.“It is a destination unlike any other in New Zealand and so different to even our other Nelson beaches. You come over that windy hill and drop down to see this amazing gold-en sand and pure blue water. You can walk off the camp-grounds and into the National Park, that’s pretty special.”Kaiteriteri hosts a range of outdoor activities such as mini golf, mountain biking, kayaking and water sports. Spend the day taking advantage of the many different adven-tures on offer from catamaran tours, day trips to Split Ap-ple rock, fishing, or just relaxing and sunbathing on the

beach. On on January 1 and 2 Motueka Rotary Club is hosting a one shot golf competition. Hitting into the estu-ary you’ll have a chance to grab $1000 in Abel Tasman Outdoors Ltd vouchers for a hole in one. Check out the infamous annual Mr and Miss Kaiteriteri contest which will take place on the 2 January from 11am on the beach and head down and watch the annual water-skiing race on Saturday 5 January.

• Kaiteriteri beach is safe for swimming, open seven days to the public and has free car parking. It is approx 50 minutes drive from Richmond along State Highway 60. After Riwaka turn right onto the Kaiteriteri-Sandy Bay Rd.

Swimming hot spots this summer

Elle Shaw, Hannah Shepherd and Jessica Young at the Roding River. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Nelson residents and holiday-makers are spoiled for choice when it comes to swimming spots. The usual question is do you go to the beach, the river or spend the day at the pool? Following last year’s flooding, all of the rivers in the Tas-man District are now open again and the fine weather has made Nelson’s iconic beaches more popular than ever. To the left is a list we’ve combined of the best plac-es to go swimming this summer, which also includes the three major public swimming pool complexs. The rivers and beaches also make for great picnicking areas. Which is your favourite?

• The Roding River up Aniseed Valley is just ten minutes away from Richmond. Motorists can access the river via Aniseed Valley Rd, which is on the main highway south of Hope. All reserves have barbeques and are great picnic spots too.

• Tahunanui Beach is off State Highway 6 at Tahunanui (turn at the lights next to KFC). It offers free barbeque amenities and free swimming. Lifeguards are on duty during peak times.

• Rabbit Island offers plenty of amenities including public toilets, free barbeques, along with plenty of space to have a picnic with the family and swim on its massive 8km long beach. Rabbit Island is just a 15 minute drive from Richmond by turning onto Redwood Rd, off Appleby Highway.

• Nayland Park Pools are the only outdoor public swimming pools in Nelson. The fa-cility is situated on Nayland Rd, opposite Broadgreen Intermediate School, and in-cludes a 50m lane pool, 20 metre learn to pool and a toddlers pool. Entry does cost.

• The ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond is located on Salisbury Rd and features a 25m lane swimming pool, a wave pool, a lazy river, spa pools, hydrotherapy and children’s pools. It also includes a gym. En-try does cost.

• Riverside Pool is an indoor swimming pool on Riverside Drv in Nelson City. It features a lane pool, children’s pool and gym facilities. Entry does cost.

On Kmart’s likely move to Richmond:I very rarely shop in Nelson as it is, it’s nice to see more of the big stores

recognizing Richmond as a good place to be… I understood the mad butcher was going to be part of the new complex as well, any confirmation on that?Dez Tinee.

More offshore/out of town busi-nesses sucking millions out of the

region, not smart to shop at these stores, no future for the next generation. Even more small businesses will be affected. Think about when you hit the small busi-ness up for sponsorship. What goes round comes round and not a lot goes round any-more.Darren Randle.

Not sure it’s going to be good for any other busi-

ness in Richmond. Donna Soane.

On last week’s story of a young man who sold his car to give gifts to sick kids:

Well done to the young man, what a wonderful

thing to do for all and it just shows that the Christmas spirit of giving is still much alive!! Hope that this young man has a great Christmas as well.Annie Whall.

Now there is the true spirit of Christmas. What a won-

Five concerts, seven daysEight strong and straight out of the Waikato, Katchafire have been at the forefront of New Zealand reggae around ten years now. Fresh from touring the globe, front man Logan Bell was excited to finally hitting the front in his own environment, with the group set to perform at the Riwaka Hotel on January as part of their NZ Summer Tour. “A lot of the places on the tour are quite significant to us. I’m from Oponui, which is up north, and a lot of these spots are places we’ve played before and the vibe was epic,” says Logan. “Aotearoa has been the forefront of our opera-tions and they’re our first and foremost fans and supporters and that will never change.”Concert-goers can expect new sounds since the last time Katchafire visited the region. However, classics such as Get Away, Seriously and Groove Again will always remain on the set-list. “We like to keep it fresh and the boys have been in the stu-dio so hopefully we can pull out some new tunes and test it.”Although it is early days in the recording process for their next album, Logan says the new music is an extension on what Katchafire has produced before. “I think some of the boys are pushing the boundaries a little bit more with their own inter-pretation of the different experiences we’ve had over the last few years and it’s going to make for some freshness for sure bro.”Katchafire recently toured Europe and South America while spending nine weeks of the year based in the United States. Brazil, known for its strong reggae base, has taken to Katchafire, who filmed a documentary there last year. “We’ve been offshore more than we’ve been home. We’ve always lead with our live show and it’s something

people can’t burn, you know? It’s hard work doing this as a living, it’s full on, but that’s the dream.”The Riwaka Hotel will be the hub for all things music this summer with eleven of New Zea-land’s top artists lining up in the space of just one week. The venue is just 37 minutes drive from Richmond and 52 minutes drive from Nelson City. Because of its close proximity to Kaiteriteri Beach, many concert-goers spend the afternoon over the hill.

The full list of concerts at the Riwaka Hotel are; Friday, December 28; Kora with The Nudge.

Sunday, December 30; Six60 Summer Tour with David Dallas.

Monday December 31; Shihad Heavyweight Kings Of Rock with I Am Giant.

Wednesday, January 2; Katchafire with Ladi 6. Thursday, January 3; Jimmy Barnes - The Red

Hot Summer Tour with Gin Wigmore.

Last year Nelson declared itself the craft brewing capital of New Zealand and looking at the list of breweries in the re-gion it’s hard to argue with the title.Nelson and Tasman has 12 craft brew-eries services, a growing number of bar taps dedicated to the local drops and this year Lonely Planet hailed the re-gion’s craft beer trail. The trail is made up of breweries and bars that sell local beer and has become a tourist magnet ever since. Many of these locally owned, family-run breweries and outlets welcome visitors for tours, sampling at the bar, having a meal or takeaway sales. Share a pint with locals, learn about our his-tory and experience the wide range of unique beers. Whether you prefer an icy pilsner or a cask-pulled ale, you’ll find it in Nelson. Some can be reached by foot from your lodging, others along a nice cycle loop, and the rest are worth the drive. Here are some of the local breweries on

I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Summer afternoon may be two of the most beau-tiful words in the English language, and summer afternoons in Tasman truly live up to this status. While enjoying the natural beauty and sun of our area, it is also important to stay safe; from the sun’s rays, and from falling into careless driving habits which can sneak in during holidays. This is a time to celebrate with family and friends, and reflecting on what is most important in one’s life.2012 has been a good year for the region, and I have been proud to serve as a member of a government, which has achieved: Around 500 extra elective surgeries per year for West Coast and Nelson-Marlbor-ough DHBs since 2008. Rolling out faster broadband to schools, hospitals, and communities across Tasman. $10.6 Million to upgrade and modernise 53 schools in West Coast and Tasman. Purchased new conservation land around Kahurangi National Park. 2013 is shaping up to be another important year for West Coast-Tasman. Remember, I’m here to serve you, so if you ever have any issues, you can get in touch at [email protected].

Chris Auchinvole.

The region’s largest fishing competition has be confirmed for the third weekend in January. The McCashin’s Brewery and Motueka RSA Fishing Contest will have its weigh in on January 20 at the Motueka RSA, with the contest starting on Friday, January 18. The contest has a huge prize pool, including $1000 for the heaviest snapper over 10kg and $400 for the average snapper weight. But there is a range of other categories including five children’s categories for heaviest kahawai, gurnard, herring, spotty and average weight snapper. There are nine adult cat-egories on top of the majors, including for heaviest crayfish

and largest scallop. The family friendly contest will also have a barbeque, bouncy castle, raffles and auction at its weigh in.Organiser Bruce Reid says they’ve always had a great turn out from people in Motueka but are hoping to encourage some more entries from people in the Waimea region and Nelson.“The prizes are great, including a new big three sponsored by the Richmond Mall. We’ve been doing this competition for ten years now so we know what we’re doing and hope to see more people from Nelson come over for it.”Entry forms at McCashin’s Brewery or from Stirling Sports in Richmond. Entry is $25 for adults and $5 for juniors.

SUMMER 201316

Get ready to enjoy a fun, family day in the sun at the races these summer holidays, when the Interislander Summer festival comes to town. The Nelson Harness Racing Club will host the annual summer races, the biggest event on our region’s social calendar attended by friends, families and local businesses at Richmond Park. The weekend is a wonderful chance to get amongst the fun and excitement of the races, enjoy taking a punt on your favourite horse and have a great time with friends and family in a fun atmosphere. Over 180 horses will race in the two day event and when the races kick off our own local trainers will be ones to watch says John McKenzie, President of the Nelson Harness Racing Club. The annual event will receive huge support from Canterbury trainers with the best of the best in the South Island heading to our region to participate in the event. The event will be held earlier than last year’s race days which attracted over 7500 people to allow more local families and holiday makers to celebrate at the event and John says this year is looking to be bigger and better than ever.“What a weekend it’s going to be, we are really looking forward to it. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the races this year with a wide range entertainment on offer from kid’s activities music, great food and of course the main event - the races.” The racing will kick off on Friday 4 January and Sunday 6 January. Each day will host around 10 races and there will be plenty of chances to place a bet and come out better off with full TAB facilities on hand. Take a chance on your favourite, beat the odds and have a blast cheering your horse over the finish line. Go for the crowd favourite or vote for the underdog because anything could happen.

The feature race for the event will be held on Sunday with the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup up for grabs, and Friday will feature the Golden Edge Prelude race. Those that miss out on a winning horse will get a second chance with the lucky losing ticket draw offering a chance to win an Interislander family trip to Wellington and a family Pass to the Trentham Family Race Day

including a reserved table and picnic hamper. Place a bet on a horse and even if you lose the race you could still be in to win. The races are not the only reason to head down to Richmond Park on race day with a huge variety of entertainment planned for the whole family to enjoy. Local musical talent Fool’s Gold – featuring members

of The Peasants - will perform throughout the day and there will be loads of free entertainment for the kids including bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting and ‘kids go racing activities’, including kids races on the track. There will be something to keep everyone going throughout the day with plenty of local food

on offer from great coffee, chips, burgers, roast pork sandwiches as well as a great selection of wine, beers and non alcoholic beverages. You can bring your own food and drink for a budget friendly day out too, so park your family up with a picnic and enjoy a day relaxing in the sun.It wouldn’t be the races without taking a chance in the fashion stakes so get dressed up and enter in the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field event on Sunday. Registrations will begin at 11am on the day at the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field tent next to the TAB marquee centre track.

The fashion heats will be held behind the VIP Lindauer marquee. The best dressed female will take home some great prizes with a $1,000 Shopping Spree, a magnum of Lindauer and $200

SUMMER 2013 19

Rarely do I have the last word on any subject. However, I have the privilege of submitting the final installment of Just A Thought for 2012. It’s a challenge really; the fuel in the tank of this old Model T Ford has almost dried up after travelling through 2012, and I’m battling into the wind. So I’ll borrow a technique from that great teacher Je-sus of Nazareth, whose birth we cele-brated on Tuesday, and share with you a parable which I feel is one to take into 2013: One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son “how was the trip?” “It was great Dad,” he replied. “Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked. “Oh yeah”, said the son. “So tell me , what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The

son answered; “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in

our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added; “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.” Isn’t perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder

what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don’t have. In 2013 may we appreciate every single thing we have; they are gifts from God. Have a thoughtful and thankful new year.

Just a thought...

Paul Tregur-tha, Waimea

Methodist Parish.

Marty’s Kain for hometown action

Marty Kain could be in line to play his first HRV Cup game in Nelson when the Central Stags face the Canterbury Wizards twice in three days. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Marty Kain hasn’t been reminding his coach that the two upcoming HRV Cup matches could be the first time he’s played domestic cricket in his hometown. The 24 year old all-rounder is hop-ing his performances will do the convincing instead. “Oh it’d be brilliant. I’m sure my fam-ily would be really proud and that my mates will be here giving me plenty of abuse from the side-lines,” he says. The former Waimea College cricketer left Nel-son when he was just 15 years old to pursue a cricket scholarship in Christchurch. Now back in his city of birth, Marty is juggling his new job as a real estate agent with his cricketing career and he’s ticking off his goals both on and off the pitch. He has played in all of the bottom-placed Stags’ first HRV Cup matches so far. But one thing that has alluded him during his domestic career is playing at Saxton Oval. However, that could

all change on January 1 and 3 with the side set to take on the Canterbury Wizards in a double header. “As long as I can go well in the next fews games then I might get the opportunity. I played the first two twenty20s and this is obviously a spinner-friendly wicket with big boundaries as well. It should make a difference to getting hit out of the park in Napier by Jesse [Ryder].”Marty believes Central Districts need to win six or seven games to make the playoffs, but they are certainly not out of contention just yet. The side could be bouyed by the return of Blackcap Ross Taylor who is expected to be back in time for the two Nelson fixtures. Now that he is a contracted player, Mar-ty says the only difference is being paid to play. “Obviously I’m working at Harcourts now and it actually gives me plenty of time to be in the office. I’m working on that side of my career as well so it’s a good balance.” Both matches begin at 2pm and tickets can be bought at the gate.

On behalf of the DBFC I would like to welcome all the fishing holiday makers to Nelson. You are fortunate enough to have arrived when the fishing is nearing its best. The Top of the South is blessed with a mul-titude of fishing grounds and is just waiting for you to make the most of them.As always at this time of the year the boat ramps, beaches and water ways are always extremely busy. Take care to find out the lay of the land from the locals as their local knowledge and advice will help enhance your day out. Make sure you are aware of local fish limits and sizes for spe-cific areas, as they will differ from your own location. If fishing in the Marlborough Sounds for blue cod please make yourself familiar with the strict laws regarding the taking of these fish. The laws will be heav-ily enforced by MAF over the holi-day period.Tasman Bay has been producing some excellent snapper and they are being taken out in the deeper water straight out from Nelson. Head out into the middle of the bay in at least 15-17 metres of water, burley and stray line rigs with fresh baits, pillies or squid. The other alternatives are to fish in close to Rabbit Island or the Boulder Bank with flasher rigs to target the smaller snapper. Please also note that from approximately the end of the Glen, including Ca-ble Bay to Pepin Island is a marine reserve and a no fishing zone. Past here is Delaware Bay which has been fishing well for snapper and

gurnard. Kahawai are about in pro-lific numbers this season and can be caught absolutely anywhere in the Top of the South. The Boulder Bank is due to go off anytime with good numbers of kingfish. So if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, now is the time to do it. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper water but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it

easy. Remember to adhere to speed re-strictions when in close proximity to other users, observe local rules, wear life jackets, and check the ma-rine forecast before you go out and leave a trip report with someone. Remember that it is always the skip-per’s job to ensure the crews safety and safety of others at all times when on the high seas.On that note the DBFC wishes its members, locals and holiday mak-ers alike, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Holiday program

Mapua is set to buzz this summer now that the Mapua Wharf precinct is temporarily a pedes-trian only zone for a part of the season’s summer holidays. The Mapua wharf area will be closed through to February 7 to all motorists aside from service vehicles and those launching boats. The idea to open the space up to the public and create a safer environment over the busy season has been welcomed by Mapua residents as the area is frequently used by families and cyclists. Reducing the amount of traffic in the area has made the area more enjoyable for everybody to use says Brian Ensor, chair of the committee for the Mapua Water Front Precinct Advisory Group.Brian says the wharf precinct is extremely popu-lar over the holiday period and the vehicle ban is about enhancing the experience for visitors to the area. With the development of parking nearby and the increased use of both the wharf and Mapua

Ferry over the summer Brian says the move has made sense to all users of the area. The Mapua Ferry is now a well-used feature along the Tasman Great Taste Trail and is a huge attraction for visitors says Brian.“The cycle trail and Mapua Ferry have really opened up the wharf area for a range of rec-reational activities. There is cycle and scooter hire available and many people are catching the ferry over to swim at Rabbit Island or making the most of the great restaurants and boutique stores at the wharf.”With development continuing on the Water-front park including the completion of the toilet block and shelter Brian says visitors and locals alike can look forward to using the wharf and park to its full potential this summer.

• Mapua is open seven days to the public, has free parking and is approximately a 20 minute drive from Richmond. Follow State Highway 60 from Richmond and turn right onto Mapua Dr.

Mapua has plenty to offer

Falcons ready to flyThe task couldn’t be harder for the Nelson Falcons, who face last year’s defending champions in their in-augural match. But despite the all-important clash against Canter-bury United on January 13 and the announcement that Nelson has bid for a senior team, youth coach Da-vor Tavich is certainly not feeling the added pressure.A reasonably successful pre-season trip to the North Island gave the Falcons their two first victories and it was those results that have giv-en the team confidence that they deserve to be in the ASB Youth League. Cory Brown and Ross Mc-Phie will have no part in the Fal-cons’ first season, being called into the New Zealand Under-17 team instead. But it is the experience of two overage players, captain Mark Johnston and goal keeper Coey Turipa that Davor hopes will help carry the youngsters. “There’s a lot of young boys that are promising but the two senior boys are prob-ably going to be called upon a lot. It’s good for the boys to learn from them and the work ethic from the two senior boys is amazing and the other guys just feed off it,” says Da-vor. Another experienced campaigner Davor will call on is Erik Panzer, who captained Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League title last year and also played ASB Premier-ship football for their senior team. The former Garin College student

is has just finished his first season in the United States on a college scholarship. Fox Slotemaker will be available after spending the year at Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland where he was part of the Kevin Fallon-coached side that won the New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship in Nelson.Davor believes the Canterbury match will be the toughest of the campaign with a number of the opposition players already boast-ing ASB Premiership experience with the Canterbury United. “We haven’t seen Canterbury at all and I’ve seen the list and for this youth league they’re fairly old. They’ve got 12 players that are 18 and al-though we’re confident that we can compete it’s going to be a lot harder than what we faced in Wellington. I think they will be the best team in the competition.”But Nelson’s strength will be its unity, according to Davor, who believes the fact most of the Fal-cons have played together for their individual schools and clubs for a number of years will make them gel a lot quicker.Davor was enjoying his role as the head coach, saying it was a “real honour” to be part of the coaching staff in the team’s first season.

The Nelson Falcons take on Canter-bury United at Trafalgar Park on January 13 in their first ever ASB Youth League match. The game kicks off at 1:30pm.

Also, a travelling exclusion zone of 100m (reduced from the statutory 200m) around the barge has been granted while it is flying a red swallow tailed flag, or showing a red all-round light, indicating that there are un-discharged explosives aboard. The barge may be loaded and unloaded in Stephens Bay or Tapu Bay. All other water users should keep well clear for their own safety. The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including boating, kayaking or swimming from occurring within that area for the time specified. Event marshalls have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required. People wishing to observe the display from boats must stay outside of what is usually the waterskiing area, and over 100m away from the barge. They should carry a fire extinguisher, cover exposed fuel tank vents, and show the correct navigation lights for their type of vessel.A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event, which may be viewed by contacting the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on Ph. 03 543 8400 during office hours.

Warning – Raft RaceBetween 12 noon and 4.30 pm on Wednesday 2 January or Thursday 3 January 2013 the area of the lower Aorere River shown below is reserved for the Collingwood Raft Race.Vessels wishing to transit through or use the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may only do so if and when, and under such conditions, that the event organisers may choose to specify. Delays can be expected, but access will not be unreasonably denied.Event communications are on Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. If in doubt, call ‘Race Control’ or consult an event marshall (who will be wearing a high-visibility vest). Vessels entering or within the reserved area are required to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials as if it were a direction given by the Harbourmaster.Race start: 1.30 pm at Beardmore’s BeachContact: Bill Climo, Ph. 021 033 1227

Other water users should stay well clear.Vessels entering or within the reserved area are required to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials as if it were a direction given by the Harbourmaster. The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities, including water skiing, from occurring within that area for the time specified. The water ski access lane will be closed for the duration of the event.A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event. These conditions may be viewed by emailing [email protected], or calling Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on Ph. 03 543 8400.

The water ski access lane will be closed for the duration of the event (unless the Ligar Bay inlet option is used).A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event. These conditions may be viewed by asking an Event official on site.
