Credit Unions were
originally formed
out of the political
and financial unrest of
the Great Depression.
Their consumer base
was a community of
interested people who
joined together to
pool their deposits
and to provide loans
to others in the
defined community.
Today is not much
different than the
original roots or
beginnings of
credit unions in
the United States.
The time is very similar with the upheaval in
the Stock Market-the continued problems
with the economy; high levels of
unemployment; and a great turmoil of
uncertainty and unrest. Fortunately, we are
not in a great depression. We are
experiencing many of the difficulties that
others experienced in the early 1900’s.
Credit Unions were important at that time
and continue to remain important to the
overall economy of our local communities
that we serve. One of the weaknesses of the
credit union industry is its low awareness
among consumers and the perception of a
limited product and service offering.
Credit Unions were vital in the recovery
after the Great Depression and are even
more important today in our current
economy. FirstLight Federal Credit Union
plays a significant role in the lives of our
members and the communities that we serve.
Here are just a few reasons:
• Credit Unions have a concern for their
members – provide financial education (at
no cost to the member)
• Credit Unions provide all the traditional
products and services offered by other
financial institutions, but add additional
value of lower fees, higher rates on
deposits and lower loan rates
• Credit Unions provide added value,
such as identity theft programs, access to
grant money for closing costs for certain
segments of our markets
• Discount program with many products
through the “Invest in America” program.
Check out the program at
www.lovemycreditunion.org
• Assist our members in providing low
income housing in our communities
• Insurance, Retirement and Financial
Planning services for our members
• Invest in the communities that we serve
with donations, volunteer hours and other
support
• Financial Counseling at no cost through
the “BALANCE” Program
• Ever expanding ATM network with
surcharge-free ATMs
• Shared branching which allows access
to your account through other affiliated
credit unions at no charge to our members
• A new relationship rewards program that
offers discounts on loans to you and your
dependents living at home
As you can see, FirstLight Federal Credit
Union is not just another financial
institution. FirstLight Federal Credit Union
is all about people helping people in our
ongoing efforts “to help our members
achieve financial success.” Please continue
to use FirstLight Federal Credit Union and
tell others about this wonderful secret and
how your credit union has helped you.
