How does Democracy work?! Democracy is a system of government in a country whose leaders have been elected by the people. Democracy gives the people in the country freedom to vote for the government they want. For example, in the USA, they use democracy, in the last election, citizens could vote for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.

How does democracy work? (continued)

The citizens thought that Barack Obama had a better way to govern the country and he would make an exceptional president. The President can control the rights of the people, but the president is powerful but cannot control everything; there are also others in control of the government like the Cabinet, Supreme Court and Congress.

The Impact that this System of Governance has on Individuals

A democracy is supposed to allow the citizens to have freedom of speech. In the US, people are not forced to vote, it's a choice. Each individual person has the right to vote, has the right to speak freely and to have different beliefs. The impact on individuals is that people have to be active, responsible and committed to making the country better.

The Impact that this System of Governance has on Individuals

Individuals can’t take their freedom for granted; they have to get up and take action if they have a different opinion than the people in charge of the country. They can do this by protesting, sending letters and by organizing events to share what they believe. There are also negative impacts on democracy like age restrictions and too much freedom of choice, also, if there is someone that doesn’t like the way that the country governs itself and it is governed this way by people voting for it, that person could form a gang or organization and could have a riot.

People’s Roles in this System of Governance

The key role of citizens in a democracy is to participate in the outside world. Voting in elections is another important duty of all citizens. But to vote wisely, each citizen should listen to the opinions of the different candidates, and then make his or her own decision on whom to support. Democracy depends on citizen participation in all these ways. But participation must be peaceful, respectful of the law, and tolerant of the different views of other groups and individuals.
