  • TORQUE FROM THE EDITOR

    Johan Rademan

After two months of a string of event, we can once again share all the experiences with those who were unable to attend. However, I notice that most club activities are usually attended by the same people. Like the club's Mission on our website.. “With us you will definitely find something to suit your passion. You can choose from rallies and technical discussions, social evenings and outings and tours where you can drive your old car with pride through the natural beauty and nostalgia of the Southern Cape.” It is all about Passion and not about forming “Clicks”. We invite all our members to get more involved.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this “Spanner”. Once again, I invite everyone to share your experiences with oil, grease and dust. Please send news, photos, stories and events.

DKW – The Little German Miracle

The 1959 DKW 1000SP that belonged to Tony Du Rand, one of our longest serving Club Members, with Lionel Hunt, an Elvis Impersonator at the Elvis Festival May 2011 at Storms River Village, Tsitsikamma. The following information was supplied by Tony: The DKW was perhaps the car that converted rural South Africans to smaller cars and it influenced the local car market way beyond the numbers sold locally. Like most good ideas, the DKW was a one man concept. The man behind the marque was one Jörgen Skäfte Rasmussen, a Danish-born engineer who in 1916 founded a factory at Zschopa in the Ergebirge near Zwickau in Saxony Germany, to produce steam fittings. That year he attempted to produce a steam-driven car, called the DKW. Although unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy engine in 1919, called Des Knaben Wunsch – "the boy's wish" which certainly assisted cyclists to to ascend the hills of Saxony. Production of a tiny 1 HP bicycle engine started soon. He put a slightly modified version of this engine into a motorcycle and called it Das Kleine Wunder – "the little wonder" the initials from this becoming the DKW brand: by the late 1920s, DKW was the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer.

  • These engines were intended for machines rather more ambitious than pedal-cycles which were installed in German bikes of the time, like Falke and Hulla. The success of the DKW bike engine prompted Rasmussen to manufacture complete bikes and by 1935 his DKW works were the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. All of these bikes were powered by DKW. During the late 1920’s, the management of the Deutsche Wagen AG of Spandau, Berlin approached Rasmussen with the intension to manufacture a small two-cylinder motor for a small car they intended to manufacture. D-Wagen Works, a company best known for its Durant Cars, built under license of Billy Durant’s Third Empire, had finances as shaky as those of William Crapo Durant, by 1926 was no more. Rasmussen took over the works, authorised the design and development of a small car and by 1928 the manufacture of the two-stroke DKW started at Zschopau as well as Spandau.

The first DKW car was notable for its unitary construction, but instead of an all-steel body, the type P DKW had a wooden chassis less body. It was rear-wheel drive and with an all-up weight of merely 500kg, it had a brisk performance for a car of a mere 600 cc. In 1931 the very successful DKW front-wheel drive was introduced.

The tiny F1500 had a mere 490 cc, an output of only 15 HP, and a three speed transmission. In fact it was the first mass produced front-wheel drive car, and its two cylinder engine was mounted transversely, pre-dating the Mini by more than a quarter of a Century. It had a backbone chassis and a wooden body one associates with the make. It performed well, beating amongst others, a Type 40 Bugatti in a race on a frozen lake in Northern Sweden. Like all economy cars, the DKW became larger and heavier and by 1933 had been succeeded by the Reichsklasse and the Meisterklasse. During the 1930’s and many years afterwards, South Africans began to respect DKW. Mechanically they were robust and had the ability to to ford streams that were quite impassable to Detroid Iron. Unfortunately the timber bodies did not last and many a DKW motor and transmission found itself transplanted into cars ranging from FIAT Topolinos to Austin Seven Ruby Saloons.

  • They were very attractive little cars the cabriolets looking like miniature versions of the enormous Horch open cars, favoured by the rich Germans of that era.

The mechanical specification of the little two – cylinder served DKW very well – in fact – after World War II and the partition of Germany, DKW formed the basis of the design of the gruesome East German Zwickau and the Trabant. (Next Time) The Masters of Stuttgart called it a day and replaced the rather thirsty two-stroke engine with a four-stroke, using the same body that the last DKW’s had in the sixties. The four rings still grace the attractive grille of the new car, but the name had to be changed; simply because DKW stood above all – Two-Stroke! So it came to pass that DKW had transformed itself into AUDI and the this respected make joined Lanchester, Packard, Delahaye, Austin, Studebaker and some 5000 others in the great Cemetery of Lost Causes.

  • PISTON RING SWOPMEET

Mike Alexander PISTON RING SWOPMEET – MODDERFONTEIN SEPT 2019 The third weekend in September saw 5 members of the SCOCC heading for their biannual pilgrimage to Joburg.

Mike, Peter, Danie, Phillip and Jack Boshoff, (a founding member of our Club) packed into the kombi and left at 4am Friday to head north. We were towing a trailer with the cab of an old Chev truck that had to be delivered to one of our friends in JHB. We met up with our friends from Durban (Ed and Natalie), and slept comfortably in the Clubhouse at Modderfontein.

Saturday morning saw us travelling in the direction of Benoni to visit an interesting collection belonging to a friend of Ed (and to see Ed’s newly acquired 1939 Chev Panelvan). Danie was drooling over the radial engines and we all drooled over a 1934 Hupmobile 3 window coupe – a very, very pretty car! We also visited a small bike collection on the way back to Modderfontein, where an antique drill and stationary engine was purchased!. The evening was spent around the fire with braai and toasted sarmies as usual, and meeting up with many friends from JHB, Durban, PE etc. Stories of old cars were swopped and new contacts were made. The social aspect of the swopmeet is definitely as important as the buying aspect! We were up at 4h30 on Sunday morning (1 person actually got up accidentally at 2h30 to shower etc, only to find that everyone was still asleep when he returned to the room) to start browsing around the many stalls – the early bird catches the worm! Many items were bought, especially tools and another engine. I ended up with a new motorcycle project too. We left at midday and went to load more engines at Andrew’s store before heading south. A very heavily loaded trailer and 5 satisfied enthusiasts overnighted in Bloemfontein. We then made our traditional stop at Hannes’ scrapyard in Colesburg (see photo) before heading home. Another most enjoyable weekend had ended, and we were already planning for the third weekend in March while coming over the Outeniquas! What a privilege to have had Jack with us on this adventure – may there be many more!!

    Eric

The more I read about which engine oils I should be using in my older cars the more confused I become. Straight oils, multigrade oils, oils with this or that muti? I must admit I use whatever is on special at the local stores and hope for the best. What I am aware of is that modern engines use roller lifters on the camshafts to open and close the valves where the early engines used lobes and mechanically pushed the valves open and it's a fact that the lobes on the camshafts of older engines are being damaged by modern oils because of the removal of a product called ZDDP.

I've just spent hours on the internet reading up about the product ZDDP ( Zinc Dialkyl Dithiphosphate) which the experts tell us that prior to1989 (in the USA) was added to oils to protect the sliding motion of camshafts and that modern oils don't use it any more as is no longer required. It also causes problems with catalytic converters in modern engines.

As we are aware special oils are available, for those who can afford them that is, designed for use in older engines with the correct amount of ZDDP. The question is, is it possible to add ZDDP to our typical super market oils?

At a recent discussion on the subject one of those knowledgeable chaps amongst us pointed out there was a product on the market designed to add to modern oils which will protect valve lifters in older engines - this obviously needed further investigation. A visit to the local Midas uncovered the product in question made by Wynn's called Hydraulic Valve Lifter concentrate. I contacted Wynn's and they confirmed that this product contains up to 5% ZDDP and is designed to assist with the sliding cam action in older engines. Is it the answer - could be, for a R110.00 an oil change it may be worth trying.

If anyone has any experience or anything to add to the above, or would like a copy of Wynn's Material Data sheet pertaining to this product, please let me know. Are there any other products available that can be recommended? What do the racing chaps use in early engines? Please let me know at: [email protected]
