Who we are and what we do Black Dog Institute (BDI) is a global leader in mental health research and the only Medical Research Institute (MRI) in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan.

Areas of strength include suicide prevention, digital mental health, workplace mental health, new treatments, and prevention in young people. We join the dots, connecting research answers, expert knowledge and the voices of lived experience to deliver solutions that work across the healthcare system for patients and practitioners alike.

The Institute is proud to be a trusted partner of government, universities, health services, clinicians, industry, workplaces, schools and philanthropists across the country.

Born from science - Our research identifies the scientific foundations on which we can develop practical programs that work in the real world.

Driven by compassion - We listen and learn from those with first-hand experience of mental illness, and to our partners and peers, to inform everything we do.

Results in action - By connecting the dots, what starts in research results in action.

Deep local insights through data analysisWork with our team of Data Analysts to better understand priority populations in your communities.

The Black Dog Institute, in collaboration with the Australia National University, SAS and the Paul Ramsay Foundation, has pioneered new data systems over the last 5 years, to help communities unlock insights and develop more targeted suicide prevention initiatives.

Our system helps identify local suicide clusters, trends, and rates while overlaying demographics, socioeconomic information, workforce and environmental factors. At the forefront of the system is the opportunity to geospatially map these data sources. We then support you to unpack these insights to inform the development of suicide prevention plans.

“The systems approach for us has been absolutely critical, and the analysis report, in particular has been crucial because it really helped us work with the team around specific suicide hotspots.”

Cath Bird, Community Engagement Coordinator, Suicide Prevention

Our systematic approachIt all starts with having the right information.

The Suicide Data Analysis Report (SDAR) is based on the systematic collection of regionally specific data about suicidal behaviour (suicide mortality and intentional self-harm) to:

• Monitor trends

• Identify high-risk groups

• Inform the development and implementation of targeted local suicide prevention plans

Advantages of local analysis of suicide data

• Risk factors that we assume are constant often have important regional variations

• Geospatial coordinates of suicide death locations are manually geocoded for greater accuracy in identifying local suicide hotspots

• Local analysis of suicide data is important for the effective allocation of resources

• Understanding local risk profiles enables targeted suicide prevention planning and initiatives

We can provide tailored services for integrated suicide prevention that include:

• Needs assessment and data mapping

• Planning and implementing suicide prevention strategies

• Reviewing and developing local suicide prevention activity plans

• Implementation and capacity building workshops

• Stakeholder engagement and development of collaboratives

• Research and evaluation of local initiatives

• Evidence and literature reviews of emerging programs

• Adapting and developing new best practice programs for your community

Our capacity building programBuilding the capacity of key partners is crucial to giving suicide prevention plans the best chance of success.

The Capacity Building Program includes (but is not limited to):

• Initial scoping of a suicide prevention strategy

• Systems approach, evidence and innovation in suicide prevention

• Lived experience and priority populations

• Setting up governance, collaboratives and working groups

• Planning for sustainability

• Conducting a needs assessment and gap analysis

• Building evaluation into suicide prevention work

• Developing and reviewing your suicide prevention action plan

The outputs of the Capacity Building Program will be:

• A regional collaborative or taskforce built with members committed to a shared vision

• A solid understanding of best practice suicide prevention and the systems approach

• A needs assessment and gap analysis

• A regional suicide prevention action plan to be locally owned

“It’s the quality of implementation that matters. Black Dog Institute has been the backbone supporting the sites, building the capability of the regions and also offering the wrap-around of data and evaluation to support decision making and influence policy.”

Our experienceWe are here to support the planning and implementation of the best integrated suicide prevention solutions for your community.

Since our first research trials in 2015, we have expanded our work to support suicide prevention activities in over 30 regions across Australia in every state and territory.

Through close collaboration with different regions, our team have:

• Produced and presented 28 geospatially mapped Suicide Data Analysis Reports

• Designed, implemented, and scientifically evaluated 5 world-first integrated suicide prevention trials

• Brought diverse stakeholders including Lived Experience, government, LHDs and PHNs together in collaboration

• Delivered capacity building workshops on suicide prevention to over 30 place-based trials

LifeSpan

In 2015, Black Dog Institute launched the LifeSpan trials in four sites in NSW (Newcastle, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Central Coast and the Murrumbidgee) to scientifically assess the impact of an integrated systems approach to suicide prevention.

LifeSpan aims to deliver the best possible evidence based research and suicide prevention intervention in NSW. The data analysis is underway with the final evaluation report due in 2022.

National Suicide Prevention Trial

The Black Dog Institute was funded by the Commonwealth Government to support the implementation of the national suicide prevention trial in 12 communities. Each site focused suicide prevention towards a specific priority population reflecting community needs.

Examples of our close collaboration in different regions, include supporting:

• North Coast PHN to understand the data on high risk sites for suicide and design public safety interventions at locations

• NW Melbourne to adapt suicide prevention programs for LGBTIQ+ communities

• Northern Territory PHN to co-design a local Indigenous framework for suicide prevention, Strengthening our Spirits (pictured on page 19)

Find out more about the insights and impact of our work across the country in our report - The National Suicide Prevention Trial: Insights and Impact.

Exploring the role of pharmacists in suicide prevention

In partnership with Primary Health Tasmania, Curtin University, the Pharmacy Guild and the Pharmaceutical Society Australia; Black Dog Institute designed and delivered a tailored pharmacy suicide prevention project for the region.

The purpose of the project is to:

• Build the capacity of pharmacists to identify and support people in distress and/or at risk of suicide and to prevent deaths in suicide

• Improve the knowledge and use of appropriate referral pathways for people expressing suicidal ideation explore means restriction activity across pharmacies
