    SuicidalThoughts

Suicidal thoughts, also known as suicidal ideation are

thoughts about how to kill oneself, which can range from a

detailed plan to a fleeting consideration and does not include

the final act of killing oneself.

The majority of people who experience suicidal ideation do

not carry it through. Some may, however, make suicide

    attempts.

Some suicidal ideations can be deliberately planned to fail or

be discovered, while others might be carefully planned to

    succeed.

    Causes of Suicide

It is very rare that someone dies by suicide because of onecause. Thus, there are usually several causes, and not just one,for suicide.

Untreated mental illness (including depression, bipolardisorder, schizophrenia, and others) is the cause for the vastmajority of suicides.

Some people die by suicide because of a depression that wascaused by genetics. In such cases individuals who died bysuicide did not exhibit any symptoms or appear to have anyserious problems. In these cases, it is possible that the personhad depression that occurred because of this genetic factor.

    Teenage Suicide

Teenage suicide is a serious and growing problem. Theteenage years can be emotionally turbulent and stressful.

Teenagers face pressures to succeed and fit in. They may

struggle with self-esteem issues, self-doubt, and feelings of

alienation. For some, this leads to suicide. Depression is alsoa major risk factor for teen suicide.

Protection of life and personal liberty

    ARTICLE NO. - 21

No person shall be deprived of his life or

    personal liberty except according to

    procedure established by law.

    24/41

HOW ARTICLE NO. 21 MAKESSUICIDE UNCONSTITUTIONAL ?

Protection of life and personal liberty is also statedunder right to life and personal liberty. Article 21

declares that no citizen can be denied his life andliberty except by law. This means that a person's life andpersonal liberty can only be disputed if that person hascommitted a crime. However, the right to life does not

include the right to die, and hence, suicide or anattempt thereof, is an offence.

A Division Bench of the Supreme Court of India in P. Rathinam v. Union of India (AIR 1994

SC 1844) held that the right to live of which Article 21 speaks of can be said to bring in its trail

the right not to live a forced life, and therefore, section 309 violates Article 21. This decision was,

however, subsequently overruled in Gian Kaur v. State of Punjab (AIR 1996 SC 946) by a

    Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, holding that Article 21 could not be construed toinclude within it the right to die as a part of the fundamental right guaranteed therein;

therefore, it was ruled that it could not be validly stated that section 309 is violative of Article 21.

In 2008 the Law Commission of India submitted a review to the government to repeal section

    309. The Law Commission said "The Supreme Court in Gian Kaur focused on constitutionality

of section 309. It did not go into the wisdom of retaining or continuing the same in the statute."

The Commission has resolved to recommend to the Government to initiate steps for repeal of

the anachronistic law contained in section 309, IPC, which would relieve the distressed of his

suffering. Suicide rate in India, is above "the average world suicide rate."

! A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that

doesn't mean that help isn't wanted.

Most people who commit suicide don't wantto diethey just want to stop hurting.

This may seem like one of the hardest thingsthat anyone can do in their lives, but it seemscompletely necessary if one wishes to be trulyhappy. Try to believe that everything happensfor a reason, no matter what the situationwas. Things will get better, but you just haveto believe that they will. Don't give up

5.TRY TO FIND WAYS TO DISTRACT YOURSELF FROMTHINKING THESE THOUGHTS.

For example, sometimes when you feel depressed or feelsuicidal, you can calm down by listening to music, writing

stories, watching TV, playing video games, hanging out withfriends, etc. There are a lot of ways that you can distractyour mind, believe it or not. But you have to have theinitiative to do those certain things and try to get out thereand live life to the fullest.
