Suggested Reading for Catholic Northwest History

The purpose of this bibliography is to list several resources currently in print and on film regarding Catholic Northwest history. Included are publications, audiovisual materials, and manuscripts. While some of the materials listed may only contain limited references to a particular topic, these are often the only references available. Additionally, books regarding national Catholic history that will assist a researcher in placing local events into national context, are listed at the end of the Publications section.

This bibliography does not include monographs, pamphlets, or newspaper articles located in the Archdiocesan Archives as such, nor does it contain the parish histories.

Circle of the Spirit. USCC, 1990. 60 minutes. Traces two northwestern Native American tribes: the Coeur d’Alene of Idaho and the Lummi of Washington State. Tribal members tell of the coming of the Jesuit "Black Robes" in 1837 and the tensions that have existed between acceptance of Christian beliefs and their traditional tribal spirituality. Mother Joseph, A Sister of Providence. 1994. 20 minutes. Sisters of Providence. A short history of Mother Joseph and her accomplishments as a women religious pioneer in the Oregon Territory. She established hospitals, schools, and orphanages throughout the Northwest.
