From playing fest ivals across the UK and Europe to being part of Hyde Park’s Olympic celebrat ions, the Tyneside group say to expect “a longer set” as a result of new songs f rom the tr io’s latest album. The Silent Students, Happy Homes campaign (SSHH) focused on reducing the noise and antisocial behaviour of students out in the local community. Throughout the week we distributed flyers with key information, launched the new ‘community’ tab on the SUBU website with a page dedicated to SSHH, and released our new video featuring local residents talking about their personal experience of the difficulties often faced and how we can work to improve the community experience for everyone.

Fairt rade Fortnight starts on the 25th February. You’l l see lots of stal ls and activ i t ies pop up at Talbot Campus, and in the Boho Lounge at Lansdowne. But what is Fairt rade and why is i t so important to support i t?When you see the Fairt rade mark over 3,000 products al l over the country, i t means that producers of things l ike your coffee, cotton and sugar, are being paid a fai r wage to cover the costs of production. They also get r ights ( including women) and have a voice in decis ions, as wel l as being given the freedom to join unions. An addit ional Fairt rade premium gives the producers an extra bit of money which they can invest in their communit ies on environmental, social or economic projects.

BU was awarded ‘Fairt rade Univers i ty’ status in 2006 by achieving f ive main goals, including committ ing to sel l ing Fairt rade products in al l Univers i ty out lets. This i s why you wi l l f ind a select ion of Fairt rade goods in the SUBU Shop, Dylans Bar, and even The Loft. Look out for hot dr inks, chocolate, wine, bananas and even clothing. Take the opportunity dur ing Fairt rade Fortnight to join in the activ i t ies, enter the competit ions and f ind out some more about the Fairt rade Foundation, and what you can achieve by swapping to Fairt rade products. Part icipation means pr izes !
